Police searching for driver in deadly Southern California hit-and-run

Police are searching for the driver of a vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run Saturday night in Gardena, authorities confirmed to KTLA.   The deadly collision occurred just before midnight in the 1600 block of Rosecrans Avenue, near Denker Avenue, less than a mile west of the Lucky Lady Casino, according to a news release from the Gardena Police Department.   When officers arrived to the scene, they found a female victim lying in the street.   Medical personnel with the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded and declared the victim dead at the scene.   Footage of the aftermath obtained by KTLA shows the street cordoned off by officers, with the victim covered by a sheet in the roadway during the investigation. Residents say same burglars targeting this Southern California neighborhood

Some residents in Sherman Oaks, Encino and Van Nuys believe they are victims of the same burglary crew, with homeowners posting videos of look-alike thieves, all of whom appear to flee in a Toyota Camry.   Surveillance footage from an Aug. 8 attempted break-in at one of the homes, owned by a woman identified only as Sofia, shows two masked men in hoodies on her property.   “I actually saw one guy running down the side of my home,” she explained. “My heart dropped and right away, I called 911.”  The suspects, who might have gotten spooked, were on her property for less than two minutes before they turned around and were seen rushing down the side of her home and out the way they came.   Sofia, who said it took police about 20 minutes to arrive, believes she was targeted because she wasn’t at home. Just days later, on Aug. 15, there was another break-in in the same area, followed by one more on the night of Aug. 17.   Surveillance footage of burglary crew on a homeowners property in the San Fernando

Israel-Hamas war cease-fire, hostage talks will continue after weekend meetings didn’t resolve gaps

JERUSALEM (AP) — A round of high-level talks in Cairo meant to bring about a cease-fire and hostage deal to at least temporarily end the 10-month Israel-Hamas war in Gaza ended Sunday without a final agreement, a U.S. official said. But talks will continue at lower levels in the coming days in an effort to bridge remaining gaps. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the talks, said lower level “working teams” will remain in Cairo to meet with mediators the United States, Qatar, and Egypt in hopes to addressing remaining disagreements. The official called the recent conversations, which began Thursday in Cairo and continued through Sunday, as “constructive” and said all parties were working to “reach a final and implementable agreement.” The talks included CIA director William Burns and David Barnea, the head of Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency. A Hamas delegation was briefed by Egyptian and Qatari mediators but did not directly take part in negotiations. The development came after Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah traded heavy fire early Sunday but backed off from sparking a widely feared

Covering Novak Djokovic’s rise to the top of men’s tennis

By Will Croxton Updated on: August 25, 2024 / 7:33 PM EDT / CBS News Novak Djokovic’s rise to the top of tennis Novak Djokovic’s rise to the top of tennis 05:20 This week, 60 Minutes correspondent Jon Wertheim profiled Novak Djokovic, the tennis legend who recently won a gold medal in the men’s singles event at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France. Djokovic won three of the four majors tennis tournaments last year, bringing his total Grand Slam wins to 24 and surpassing the records of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, who have won 22 and 20, respectively. Incredibly, Djokovic accomplished this record-breaking feat at 36 years old, an age that he never imagined reaching in the sport. Now 37, Djokovic will try to win his 25th major title at the U.S. Open, which begins Monday in New York. Wertheim told 60 Minutes Overtime that Djokovic’s dominance in men’s tennis is far from over. “The guy won three of the four majors, and he came within a couple points of winning all four of them,” he explained. “Could he play four more years, five

60 Minutes Archive: Coverage of North Korea

By Brit McCandless Farmer Updated on: August 25, 2024 / 7:33 PM EDT / CBS News Marine veteran’s work to help North Koreans Marine veteran explains alleged fake kidnapping plot to help North Koreans defect 26:09 This week on 60 Minutes, correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi reported on Christopher Ahn, an American citizen embroiled in an international case involving the United States, Spain, and North Korea. Ahn, who’s part of an activist group that broke into the North Korean embassy in Madrid, Spain, in 2019, says he was attempting to help North Korean embassy staff defect. North Korea says the incident was an attempted kidnapping that amounted to a “terrorist attack.” To understand the stakes of Ahn’s decision — and why North Koreas may want to defect from their own homeland — we turned to some of 60 Minutes’ decades-long coverage of North Korea. Reporting on the hermit kingdom is challenging; North Korea is one of the world’s most isolated countries. But over the years, 60 Minutes has found a way inside.  From images of hospitals without food or medicine to a look at the continuing military

Novak Djokovic says hungry, young tennis players “awaken a beast” in him

This is an updated version of a story first published on Dec. 10, 2023. The original video can be viewed here.  During what was less an interview than a curated tour inside his athlete psyche, Novak Djokovic told us last November: there was one tennis achievement that would complete his career: an Olympic gold medal .  This summer—age 37; coming off knee surgery—it looked unlikely. Then Djokovic, being Djokovic, showed up in Paris and didn’t win gold, so much as he seized it, beating tennis’s ascending star, Carlos Alcaraz, and playing as well as ever. Now Djokovic—the defending champ—will try to win a record 25th major title at the U.S Open, which begins tomorrow in New York. He’s doing everything possible to stretch out the ride… It was a late morning workout in Belgrade, Serbia, and Novak Djokovic let us in on a key to his staggering success: forget speed or strength…. flexibility enables him to perform feats like this…  It’s also enabled him to contort and twist the laws of time. 49ers’ Shanahan mum on how injuries impact defensive line options

SANTA CLARA — Defensive ends Leonard Floyd and Yetur Gross-Matos are not expected to open their initial seasons with the 49ers on the Injured Reserve list, despite knee injuries in Friday night’s preseason finale in Las Vegas. While Floyd is considered day-to-day, Gross-Matos is more week-to-week without mention of an IR stint, coach Kyle Shanahan said Sunday on a media conference call. The 49ers lack experienced defensive ends behind stalwart Nick Bosa, and Shanahan refused to reveal which reinforcements might make Tuesday’s initial 53-man roster reveal. “You’ll see when we decide on the 53. It sounds like a question the other 31 teams are getting you to ask me,” Shanahan said, half-jokingly. “Sorry, man, but it’s too hard to ask about specifics right now.” Options on the roster include Robert Beal Jr., Alex Barrett, Jonathan Garvin and Sam Okuayinonu. Gross-Matos and Beal have been the immediate backups to Bosa and Floyd all camp. Gross-Matos and Floyd got hurt in a three-snap, first-quarter span during Friday’s 24-24, preseason-closing tie with the Raiders. A’s top Brewers, spoiling return of former Oakland starter to Coliseum

OAKLAND — Joey Estes allowed two runs in 5 2/3 innings, and the Oakland Athletics scored four times in the fourth in a 4-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday to avoid a three-game series sweep. Estes (6-6) held the Brewers, who had scored 20 runs over the series’ first two games, to only two hits while striking out five and walking one. Mason Miller recorded his 21st save of the season, entering the game with two outs in the eighth and holding a one-run lead. The 22-year-old Estes said he effectively located his fastball, with his sweeper also working well. “I feel like I was just able to change eye levels a little bit and mix up counts,” Estes said. Brewers starter Frankie Montas (6-9) sent down the A’s in order through the first three innings, but Oakland broke through in the fourth for four runs when its first five batters reached base. “Our offense this whole homestand, we’ve struggled to score runs,” A’s manager Mark Kotsay said. “So today was a great day in that the pitching lined up for us.” Oakland

In double-dose of bad news, SF Giants lose Robbie Ray and series to Mariners

When the Giants traded away Alex Cobb and Farhan Zaidi declared their starting rotation the best in baseball, they were betting the five-man group as assembled could carry them the eight weeks from the trade deadline to the last day of the regular season and, they hoped, into October. It was a risky wager, with a pair of rookies and another coming off major surgery, and the chances of it paying off took another blow when Robbie Ray winced and grabbed at his left hamstring on his 62nd pitch Sunday afternoon at T-Mobile Park. Later diagnosed with hamstring tightness, Ray was removed from the game after a brief consultation on the mound with manager Bob Melvin and trainer Dave Groeschner. In a double-dose of unfortunate developments, the Giants dropped the rubber match of their series against the Seattle Mariners, 4-3, to send them back to .500 (66-66). “Hopefully we caught it when it’s mild,” Melvin told reporters afterward. “But those things don’t typically take a couple days.” The 32-year-old left-hander should undergo tests in the coming days to determine the injury’s severity and what kind

Motorcyclist killed, passenger injured in Grantville crash when SUV attempts illegal U-turn

A motorcycle rider was killed and his passenger was critically injured after they slammed into the side of an SUV making an illegal u-turn in Grantville Saturday, San Diego police said. The crash was reported around 4:15 p.m. on Camino Del Rio North near Ward Road, Officer Jose Perales said in a news release. Investigators said a 59-year-old man was driving his BMW motorcycle east in the far left lane when a 60-year-old man driving a Subaru SUV in the same direction in the righthand lane tried to make an illegal u-turn across the road’s median, Perales said. The SUV driver cut in front of the BMW and the motorcycle crashed into the driver’s side of the vehicle. Perales said the motorcycle driver died at the scene. A 55-year-old woman who was a passenger on the motorcycle was taken to a hospital with a fractured pelvis, broken leg and a collapsed lung. Her injuries are believed to be life threatening, police said. Alcohol was not a factor in the collision, police said. The crash is under investigation.

1 driver killed, another injured in wrong-way crash on I-8 in La Mesa

A 49-year-old Lakeside woman driving the wrong way on Interstate 8 in La Mesa was killed in a head-on crash with a pickup early Sunday, authorities said. The truck’s driver suffered moderate injuries. The crash was reported around 1:50 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the freeway just west of El Cajon Boulevard, California Highway Patrol Officer Jared Grieshaber said. Investigators said the woman was driving a Kia Sedan east on the westbound side of the freeway when she crashed head-on into a Chevy pickup driving the correct way, Grieshaber said. The woman died at the scene, investigators said. The pickup’s driver — a 34-year-old man from El Cajon — was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital to be treated. Grieshaber said alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the crash. The collision is under investigation.

As Kamala Harris claims Oakland, Berkeley forgives

High above an arena packed with Democratic delegates in Chicago last week, a video introduced the life story of Kamala Harris to the world. “Behind me is where it all began,” said her childhood friend, Stacey Johnson-Batiste, standing in front of a charming yellow, two-story home where Harris grew up in a small apartment above a nursery school. But where was that exactly? The screen simply read “East Bay,” as in the eastern section of the San Francisco Bay Area that sprawls over 1,400 square miles and is home to nearly 3 million people. Harris called the area just “the bay” in her speech Thursday night. Other speakers throughout the week referred to Harris as hailing from Oakland, the East Bay’s largest city. The word almost never spoken was the name of Harris’ actual hometown: Berkeley, California. That little yellow house sits on Bancroft Way in the university city known, fairly or not, for a hippy-dippy vibe where residents gamely embrace the nickname, “People’s Republic of Berkeley.” Harris’ old neighborhood is now called Poets Corner for its preponderance of streets named for writers such as

Gavin Stone providing quality innings in a time of uncertainty for Dodgers pitching

The calendar will soon turn from August to September, and though the Dodgers have baseball’s best record following Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Tampa Bay before a sellout crowd of 52,464 in Chavez Ravine, their rotation is filled with enough questions to raise serious doubts about their championship worthiness. Will ace Tyler Glasnow (elbow) and Yoshinobu Yamamoto (shoulder) return from injuries in time to front a playoff pitching staff? Can Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buehler, both struggling in returns from major surgeries, be counted on down the stretch? Will the inconsistent Bobby Miller regain his 2023 rookie form? In Gavin Stone, the Dodgers may have found at least one answer. The rookie right-hander gave up one run and three hits in seven strong innings Sunday, striking out seven, walking two and making only one glaring mistake, grooving a first-pitch sinker that Jonny DeLuca lined over the left-center field wall for a score-tying solo home run to lead off the seventh. “When he’s getting strike one, he’s efficient, getting swing-and-miss, soft contact, that’s who he is, who we’ve come to know and appreciate, and we needed every
