Once seen as an environmental crusader, RFK Jr. sheds green mantle with Trump endorsement

For decades, Robert. F. Kennedy Jr. worked as an environmental lawyer, filing lawsuits against polluters. He helped found a global green group that fought for clean water and helped defeat dam projects in Chile and Peru. Yet even before he announced Friday that he was suspending his presidential campaign and supporting former President Trump, Kennedy had repeatedly disappointed and angered dozens of environmentalists, who said he had abandoned his green roots. “It’s a shock to me knowing the Bobby I used to know,” said Dan Reicher, senior scholar at Stanford’s Doerr School of Sustainability. “I could not have imagined him supporting former President Trump.” Reicher, a former U.S. assistant secretary of Energy, once worked with Kennedy at the Natural Resources Defense Council, or NRDC, and spent time kayaking with him on rivers in Chile and the U.S. He said he had become increasingly dismayed by Kennedy’s campaign positions and statements on the environment. He pointed to how Kennedy had not presented any meaningful plans for cutting greenhouse gases. Instead, Reicher said, he had criticized the size of the hundreds of billions of dollars in subsidies

Humboldt officials accuse San Francisco of busing the city’s homeless problems north

SAN FRANCISCO —  San Francisco and Humboldt County officials are trading jabs over Mayor London Breed’s plans to more aggressively promote a city program that pays to relocate homeless people to other communities where they have family or other ties. During their Tuesday meeting, Humboldt County supervisors debated sending a draft letter, addressed to Breed, questioning whether San Francisco was making sure the homeless people it’s busing out actually land housing and jobs. “We are concerned that providing bus tickets to other jurisdictions without verifying access to housing, family support or employment does not alleviate homelessness; it simply shifts the person to another county,” the letter states. The supervisors were responding to a recent report in the San Francisco Standard that found the counties of Sacramento, Los Angeles and Humboldt were the top three destinations for homeless people bused out of San Francisco since September 2023. “We don’t need to be a dumping ground,” Humboldt County Supervisor Rex Bohn said at the meeting. “Our cost for taking care of a homeless person that has nothing up here … it’s expensive.” Breed’s office says the notion that

‘Like a bomb’: Exploding tire that killed L.A. County firefighter was a little-known risk

No one knew the burning construction vehicle could become a bomb. Not the driver who tried to douse it with an extinguisher. Not the workers who sent water gushing onto the engine. And not Andrew Pontious, an L.A. County firefighter dispatched to the Palmdale quarry on June 14. Pontious had sprayed water near the vehicle for about two minutes when one of its nearly 7-foot tires exploded, according to a Fire Department analysis completed this month. Hunks of rubber and steel shot the length of a football field. Pontious, 53, died instantly. L.A. County fire fighter Andrew Pontious died while on duty on June 4. (L.A. County Fire Facebook) “It was like an IED,” David Pontious, Andrew’s brother who worked at the same Palmdale fire station before retiring this spring, said, referring to an improvised explosive device, as a roadside bomb in a war zone is known. It’s common for tires to blow out in a fire, with pressure building until the air whooshes out with a loud pop. But, sometimes, the tire doesn’t blow — it explodes. The air inside the tire combines with

Could Paramount’s flirtation with Bronfman strain the Skydance deal?

Just when the $8.4-billion deal for David Ellison’s Skydance Media to buy Paramount Global was gliding toward the finish line, Shari Redstone’s roller-coaster sale took another sharp turn. Seagram liquor company heir Edgar Bronfman Jr. this week persuaded Paramount’s independent board members to consider his rival bid for the Redstone family’s investment firm, National Amusements Inc., and a minority stake in Paramount. After spending weeks rounding up investors, Bronfman submitted his proposal late Monday — two days before the bidding window closed — and then sweetened the offer to $6 billion. Now the stage is set for more jockeying until Paramount’s Sept. 5 deadline to decide who will win the beleaguered media company that owns CBS, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, MTV and the historic Melrose Avenue film studio. “This has been a very strange process,” Charles Elson, founding director of the Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance at University of Delaware, said Friday. “This company has provided more ‘theater’ than any other company I can think of. … It’s just remarkable that here we are.” Paramount’s decision to extend the deadline for Bronfman did not sit well

Langer’s Deli owner is starving for L.A. to clean up MacArthur Park, and thinking of closing

When he was a boy of 12 or so, and his parents were busy running the family restaurant, Norm Langer spent hours across the street in MacArthur Park. It was, at the time, an elegant urban oasis, with lollipop palms standing over a lake fed by natural springs. “I grew up in the park,” Langer said, seated in a booth at the famous deli he now owns at 7th and Alvarado streets. “I’d play in the park, go for boat rides, take naps. There was this whole area on the 7th Street side where older people played shuffleboard, backgammon, gin, all kinds of card games.” Today, that carefree boy of yesteryear is 79. Langer’s Deli is 77, with the number in bold yellow on the backs of employee uniforms. California is about to be hit by an aging population wave, and Steve Lopez is riding it. His column focuses on the blessings and burdens of advancing age — and how some folks are challenging the stigma associated with older adults. And the park of Langer’s childhood, which dates to the 1880s, no longer exists. It

Justin and Hailey Bieber welcome a baby boy, Jack Blues

By KAITLYN HUAMANI Saturday, August 24, 2024 12:00PM The couple announced they were expecting a baby in May via Instagram posts on their respective pages from an intimate vow renewal ceremony. LOS ANGELES — Justin Bieber, who rose to international stardom in 2010 with his hit “Baby,” has welcomed one of his own with his wife, Hailey Bieber (nee Baldwin). The singer, 30, posted a photo of a baby’s foot Friday on Instagram, revealing the child’s name as Jack Blues Bieber. The model, 27, reshared the post on Instagram Stories. It’s not clear when the baby was born; a representative for Hailey Bieber told The Associated Press on Friday night that no further details were available. The couple announced they were expecting a baby in May via Instagram posts on their respective pages from an intimate vow renewal ceremony. The videos and photos show the model, who also founded the skincare brand Rhode, wearing a form-fitting white dress that showed off her baby bump. The AP confirmed Bieber was just over six months pregnant at the time of the announcement. Since the pregnancy announcement, the

HEAT team dedicated to finding stolen vehicles in Fresno County

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — The recovery of a stolen vehicle in Fresno turned violent earlier this week when a suspect rammed law enforcement vehicles. Officers with the HEAT (Help Eliminate Auto Theft) taskforce opened fire on the suspect, who remains in critical condition. Vehicle thefts remain a consistent issue in Fresno and the crimes can be devastating for the victims. As recently as 2016 the greater Fresno area was one of the top 10 in the country for stolen vehicles. Even though Fresno has since dropped on that list, thousands of victims still find their lives turned upside down by auto theft in the city. Just over a year, Carlos Felix, a landscaper with Charlie’s Tree Service, had his work truck and trailer stolen twice from right in front of his home. “We heard the truck turn on and speed off. We jumped up, came outside, and it was gone,” recalled Felix. The first theft happened in March 2023. His landscaping truck and trailer were found nearby within a few hours by Felix’s brother, but the thieves had stolen his ladders and damaged his trailer.

Robbers Hit Hollywood Hills Home

At least two burglars robbed a multi-million dollar home in the Hollywood Hills Friday evening while the homeowners hid inside a bathroom. The home invasion was reported at around 10 p.m. in the 1300 block of Sierra Alta Way, near Sunset Boulevard and Doheny Drive, CBS2 reported, citing information from the Los Angeles Police Department. According to ABC 7, the suspects broke in through a side window, leaving glass scattered throughout the back of the home,. The suspects fled before LAPD officers arrived.

Shohei Ohtani joins 40-40 club with a walk-off grand slam. Will he be first to 50-50?

Back in spring training, during Shohei Ohtani’s early days with his new club, people around Dodgers camp couldn’t help but dream of what the two-way star’s debut season with the team could look like. Coming off his second most valuable player award and a record $700-million contract with the Dodgers in the offseason, Ohtani already was viewed as the best player in baseball. And after undergoing Tommy John surgery at the end of last year, he entered this season focused solely on being a designated hitter. The hope at the time was that Ohtani’s offense wouldn’t be burdened by his elbow surgery and rehab. That his production could be enhanced by a season of only hitting. That he somehow could elevate his game further and pursue a new set of historic targets that previously had been beyond his reach. Six months later, Ohtani surpassed even the loftiest of those expectations, becoming just the sixth player in history to produce a 40-home run, 40-stolen base season, and the first to eclipse both thresholds before the start of September. Ohtani completed the first 40-40 season in franchise

49ers’ Shanahan sheds light on top pick Ricky Pearsall’s shoulder injury

Ricky Pearsall, the 49ers’ first-round draft pick, did not play in the preseason because of an aggravated shoulder injury tracing back to his college days, coach Kyle Shanahan explained after Friday’s preseason finale in Las Vegas. Pearsall last took part in a full-team practice Aug. 6 when his shoulder issue flared up, but there is not significant enough structural damage to call into question his rookie season, the coach told reporters. “We’ll see how he is. Hoping he gets into practice this week and if he does that’s a pretty good sign of his availability,” Shanahan said in terms of the regular season opener Monday night, Sept. 9 against the New York Jets. Pearsall revealed that Pearsall subluxed — or partially dislocated — a shoulder that first was hurt in college, prior to the 49ers drafting him 31st overall on April 25. San Francisco Chronicle columnist Mike Silver told KNBR-680 AM earlier this week that Pearsall “has a shoulder thing that is now recurring and I think worrying over the long haul, something they knew about before they drafted him and were hoping wouldn’t be

49ers Studs and Duds: Brock Purdy, Jordan Mason impress in preseason finale

Let me make this clear off the jump: The 49ers had no excuse not to look good on Friday night in Las Vegas. Not only are the Niners a significantly better team than the Raiders, but San Francisco put a bunch of first-string players on the field in the team’s preseason finale. And the Raiders did not. So Brock Purdy and the Niners’ offense should have looked good. The 49ers’ defense — even without some of its cream-of-the-crop stars — should have commanded the first half game. And they did. So that’s good. Will the same truth apply to the Niners’ season opener on Sept. 9 against the Jets? We’ll find out soon enough. STUDS 💪 Brock Purdy The Russell Wilson-like devil magic was on full display on Friday, with Purdy roaming around the backfield, pulling plays out of thin air. His third-down throw to George Kittle — over a linebacker and in front of a collapsing safety, with Kittle having to go way up to get it — was a thing of beauty. His frozen-rope throw to Chris Conley while rolling out to the

49ers 24, Raiders 24: Injuries strike defensive ends in preseason finale

The 49ers gambled in Las Vegas by playing top assets in their preseason finale. That strategy quickly backfired with injuries at a marquee position offering scarce depth. Defensive ends Leonard Floyd and Yetur Gross-Matos, two of their prized additions in free agency, hobbled off with first-quarter knee sprains in Friday night’s 24-24 tie with the Raiders. Neither was an anterior cruciate ligament tear and MRI exams Saturday should determine if their availability is in question for the Sept. 9 regular-season opener, coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters afterward. Shanahan said it “wasn’t a good feeling” seeing those injuries, yet he knew the risk in dispatching key players — but not marquee defensive end Nick Bosa — onto the same field where the 49ers lost Super Bowl LVIII six months ago. (Yes, they also failed to hold a 3-point lead in the final minutes of that game; overtime is not held in the preseason.) Oakland A’s starter struggles in blowout loss to Milwaukee Brewers

OAKLAND — The Oakland A’s were blown out at the Coliseum on Friday night as a rare poor performance from left-handed starter JP Sears, along with some defensive miscues and a sputtering offense, led to an 11-3 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. Rhys Hoskins and Joey Ortiz hit back-to-back home runs as part of a five-run second inning for red-hot Milwaukee, which opened its three-game set in Oakland before an announced crowd of 14,031. The Brewers, who have won seven of nine, sent nine batters to the plate in the second to take a 5-1 lead. Hoskins, who entered the game hitless in his last 21 at-bats, put Milwaukee in front with a three-run blast after Willy Adames and Gary Sánchez led off the inning with singles. On the next pitch, Ortiz homered to left-center. Andruw Monasterio later added the fifth run, scoring from first on a single by Jackson Chourio that went under the glove of A’s left fielder Miguel Andujar. Chourio and Blake Perkins knocked in runs in the fourth, extending the lead to 7-1. Sánchez cleared the bases with a triple and scored on

SF Giants suffer brutal loss to Mariners in extras after blowing four-run lead

The Giants entered Friday night’s game against the Mariners with one of the more unique advantages they’ll have for the rest of the season. Seattle, yes, has been scuffling of late, having lost seven of its last eight games heading into this series, but that’s not where San Francisco held the upper hand. On Thursday, the Mariners announced that they had fired manager Scott Servais. The decision was likely a shock for most of Seattle’s clubhouse. The Giants, then, possessed the edge in stability. They didn’t just fail to capitalize. They imploded. Tyler Rogers allowed four runs and failed to retire a single batter he faced in the eighth inning, surrendering six consecutive singles and blowing a four-run lead in a historically bad night on the mound. That set the stage for Seattle’s Leo Rivas to hit a walk-off single off Erik Miller in the 10th inning and handing San Francisco a 6-5 loss. Not only are the Giants back at .500, but they’ve lost ground in the Wild Card standings, too, with the Diamondbacks (73-56), Padres (73-57) and Braves (69-59) all winning on Friday.
