Kamala Harris poised to make history, accept Democratic presidential nomination tonight

CHICAGO —  Vice President Kamala Harris is preparing to make history Thursday night as she becomes the first Black woman and first Indian American to accept a major party presidential nomination. The moment will be heavy with symbolism, with many women at the Democratic National Convention at Chicago’s United Center planning to wear white to commemorate the suffrage movement. But Harris has so far used this week’s convention to make a case beyond the history, emphasizing her personal biography, the party’s loosely defined “freedom” agenda and the case against returning former President Trump to the White House. “We came here to Chicago with one mission in three parts,” Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic House leader, told California’s delegates Thursday morning. “Celebrate Joe Biden, elevate Kamala Harris, eviscerate MAGA extremism.” The contest is essentially a toss-up at this point, according to pollsters. But Harris’ elevation to the top of the ticket just over a month ago, after President Biden stepped aside, has given Democrats hope that they have a chance. Harris, the vice president for four years, has sought to portray herself as a tough prosecutor who

Robert Downey Jr. reveals how Kevin Feige persuaded him to return as Doctor Doom

Robert Downey Jr. is explaining how Kevin Feige persuaded him to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom. Downey said Tuesday that he and the Marvel Studios boss had a conversation last year about Downey potentially returning to the MCU despite the “Avengers: End Game” death of his previous character, Tony Stark, better known as Iron Man. “He said, ‘It just keeps occurring to me, if you were to come back,’” Downey told the Hollywood Reporter. “‘How can we not go backwards? How can we not disappoint expectations? How can we continue to beat expectations?’ … And he brought up Victor Von Doom. I looked into this character. Later on, he goes, ‘Let’s get Victor Von Doom right.’” Doom is one of Marvel’s most formidable villains and will play a crucial role in the upcoming phase of Avengers films and the broader MCU. In Marvel comics, he is a primary adversary of the Fantastic Four. Downey had initially sought a meeting with Disney‘s Bob Iger to discuss contributing to the company’s parks and location-based entertainment. The “Iron Man” actor’s involvement in theme park

USC camp takeaways: Secondary should be strong point of revamped defense

Aug. 22, 2024 3:30 PM PT 1 Greedy Vance heard all the whispers about USC as he weighed his options this offseason. A coveted corner coming from a top-flight defense at Florida State, Vance had his pick of the transfer portal. Yet here he was joining a USC unit that scraped the bottom of the FBS last year. “There were a lot of people in my ear about the defense,” the redshirt senior said. “I just wanted to come in and be a part of the turnaround.” If there is a turnaround in store for the Trojans defense this season, then the secondary is certainly where it will start. There may not be a deeper position on USC’s roster this fall than cornerback, where Vance has joined a room with at least six viable starting options, most of whom are capable of playing multiple positions. Vance is likely to get the nod at nickel, while two other transfers — DeCarlos Nicholson (Mississippi State) and John Humphrey (UCLA) — are among the top three options at outside corner, along with Jacobe Covington. The safety spots are

Uncommitted DNC delegates staging hours-long sit-in protest outside United Center

CHICAGO — Delegates from the Uncommitted Movement have been sitting outside the United Center for nearly 20 hours, calling for the Democratic National Convention to include a pro-Palestinian speaker. A group of about 40 unconfirmed delegates and supporters spent the night outside the United Center on the sidewalk, and remained there on the last day of the DNC, Thursday. They said they’re waiting for a call, hopefully from party leadership, saying they’ve changed their mind, and will allow a pro-Palestinian speaker to address the DNC. But, so far, the answer is no. “That was unacceptable to us. Because, as Democrats, we are the party of representation; we are the party of inclusion,” Michigan delegate Abbas Alawieh said. “This level of silence and exclusion is deeply, deeply offensive to us, and so we’re staying right here.” On night three of the Democratic National Convention, parents of American hostage Hersh Goldberg in the Oct. 7 attack in Israel spoke on stage, pleading for the release of those held captive in Gaza. “We heard Hersh’s story,” Alawieh said. “We were moved by it. We were removed by the

Final ‘People Mover’ cars arrive at LAX in major milestone for delayed project

A sight for sore eyes, an important milestone was reached on the LAX Automated People Mover project. On Wednesday, Los Angeles World Airports announced that the final four train cars to be used on its People Mover track have arrived from their manufacturer in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. One of the last four Automated People Mover vehicles for LAX is shown as it arrives at the airport in this undated photo provided by Los Angeles World Airports. The system now includes 44 train cars, the first of which arrived more than two years ago. The Automated People Mover, or APM, is the centerpiece of a multi-billion dollar modernization effort at LAX. The 2.25-mile system aims to improve the passenger experience, alleviate traffic and connect one of the busiest airports in the world with better public transit with six new stations along its route, connecting to parking structures, car rental facilities and a new LA Metro transit facility in El Segundo. Wednesday’s announcement was a refreshing good piece of news for a project that has made headlines for being both delayed and over budget. The project was approved in 2018 and

New San Jose postmaster fulfills immigrant mom’s dream

When he was officially sworn in as San Jose’s 28th executive postmaster Wednesday, Rick Keppeler was not only reaching a milestone in his career with the U.S. Postal Service, he was also fulfilling a dream of his mother’s. An immigrant from South Korea, she wanted nothing more than to work for the post office when she came to the United States but never really got that opportunity, Keppeler told the audience gathered at the Janet Gray Hayes Rotunda at San Jose City Hall. Rick Keppeler, left, is sworn in by Aron Jones, U.S. Postal Service district manager for Santa Ana, as the 28th Executive Postmaster of San Jose on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024 at San Jose City Hall. (Sal Pizarro/Bay Area News Group)  When the Monterey Peninsula native finished his service as an MP with the U.S. Army, he was hoping to get a job as a police officer. But his mom had a different idea. “She kept telling me, go apply at the post office,” he said, adding that he just made the deadline for his veteran’s status to help him get the job.

Boichik Bagels expanding to Los Gatos

Boichik Bagels, hailed by the New York Times as some of the finest New York-style bagels in the nation, will soon be available in Los Gatos. Eight months after expanding to the South Bay for the first time, founder Emily Winston is getting ready to open a shop on busy Los Gatos Boulevard. A late September debut is forecast in the Village Square / Trader Joe’s shopping center. The shop will be located near the UPS Store and See’s Candies. That town has long been on Winston’s destination list, with plenty of local residents requesting an expansion location, she told the Mercury News last December at her Santa Clara opening in the city’s tech corridor near Highway 101. More San Francisco bagels were the first priority, and she has fulfilled that need with a new shop this week on Battery Street. Topping the menu of 15 bagels are the popular Everything, Eggything, Pumperthingle and Pumper Raisin Swirl. Unique cream cheese flavors include Horseradish Cheddar, Hatch Chile and the seasonal Basil and Sundried Tomato. Boichik also sells smoked salmon and house-made whitefish salad and makes sandwich
