At least 5 bodies recovered from yacht off Sicily as questions mount

By Anna Matranga Updated on: August 22, 2024 / 6:11 AM EDT / CBS News Several bodies recovered from Bayesian’s wreckage Several bodies recovered from wreckage of sunken yacht off Sicilian coast 01:35 Rome — Divers recovered the body of the fifth victim of the Bayesian superyacht wreck Thursday morning, Sicily Civil Protection Chief Salvo Cocina confirmed to CBS News, but it was unclear whether the sixth and final body from the doomed vessel had come ashore. The bodies of six people had remained stuck inside the 184-foot luxury yacht for days after it sank early Monday morning off the coast of Palermo, Sicily in a severe thunderstorm. Witnesses earlier said a six body bag had been brought ashore, but authorities did not confirm the recovery of the final victim Four bodies were retrieved Wednesday from the Bayesian, which was on a 90 degree angle on the seafloor at a depth of over 160 feet. The vessel’s position and items that moved around inside the ill-fated yacht made recovery efforts slow and hazardous. Italian authorities have not officially identified the remains recovered from the Bayesian

‘Convenience’

Editor: To understand Rob Arkley’s sincerity in all things parking lot related one need only consider his position (“Inadvertent Disclosure,” July 25). Arkley sees the loss of city-owned parking lots in order to build more housing might so inconvenience his employees that, rather than subject them to the risk of walking a few blocks, he would instead relocate his businesses out of Eureka, presumably to his now-home state of Louisiana. I can only imagine how much his employees will thank him for that convenience! Richard Salzman, Arcata…

‘Pretend Warfare’

Editor: As a retired pilot, I have an interest in aircraft technology, and I also appreciate the historical value of the military relics which made up the greater part of the Rumble Over the Redwoods air show (Calendar, Aug. 8). So, I have no issue with air shows in general, despite their presumably huge carbon footprint. What I find both unnecessary, and contrary to the well-being of the community, was the pyrotechnics that accompanied the aircraft. There were a great many huge explosions which could be heard as far away as Azalea Hill, and which created a large cloud of pollution that drifted over central McKinleyville. All of the animals at the county shelter next to the airport experienced two days of fear. Perhaps even worse, veterans living in McKinleyville, some suffering from PTSD caused by their actual combat, were subjected to this pretend warfare. That this trauma was caused just so that some people could gawk at explosions seems completely irresponsible, and contrary to our community values. It is my hope that if the air show ever comes back to our community, they do so

‘Vindicates’

Editor: “Regrettably Deficient,” the title of Thadeus Greenson’s article in the Aug. 1 NCJ taken from the report by the OIR Group, the independent Eureka police oversight group, regarding the Cal Poly Humboldt’s administration’s heavy-handed response to the students who wanted Cal Poly to divest from involvement with Israel as it carries out what the International Court of Justice called “plausible genocide” of Palestinians in Gaza, should be applied as well to the politicians and others who took out an ad in the June 6 NCJ praising Cal Poly President Tom Jackson Jr.’s crackdown as “doing a great job.” I call this group the “Down with Graffiti, Up with Genocide Gang.” It is headed up by Rex Bohn and Michelle Bushnell (Humboldt County supervisors), Tami Trent (mayor of Fortuna), William Honsal (Humboldt County’s sheriff), Chris Howard (a Del Norte County supervisor) and Ronald Rowland (a retired judge) and a rag-tag posse of “alumni, donors, community members and staff.” These law-and-order advocates said, “any professors or students that caused damage to the university should be held accountable and all who caused damage should be prosecuted to

‘Very Informative’

Editor: Thank you for a very informative editorial about the “complicated, convoluted story” about the property exchange agreement reached with Eureka City Schools (“VTY, Not Rob Arkley,” Aug. 15). I especially liked the article’s lead: “We were taught long ago that if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, chances are pretty good it’s a duck. The old adage came waddling back amid news late last week that AMG Communities-Jacobs, LLC, pulled out of the controversial $6 million property exchange agreement it had reached with Eureka City Schools in December after the district declined its request to extend escrow past the November election.” That definitely made me want to read more. August 22, 2024 / 4:28 AM EDT / CBS/AP 8/21: CBS Evening News 8/21: CBS Evening News 19:46 Columbia, S.C. — A deputy in South Carolina has been charged with voluntary manslaughter and assault after he shot an unarmed suspect five times, killing him, and the deputy’s police dog mauled a different, innocent person, authorities said. State agents arrested former Florence County deputy Treyvon Jonathan Sellers on Wednesday. He was on leave after the May 26 shooting and was fired in July after an arrest in an unrelated domestic violence case. Sellers was awaiting a bond hearing at the Florence County jail on Thursday. Jail records didn’t indicate whether he had a lawyer. Sellers was chasing 43-year-old William Dwayne Rankin when Rankin crashed into a tree and ran into a nearby home near Florence, the State Law Enforcement Division said in a sworn statement. Sellers went into the home through the back door with his police dog, which was not on a leash, and didn’t announce who he was, state agents said. He then ordered the dog to attack without knowing who was inside. The

Uber driver accused of showing passenger lewd photos in Clovis

CLOVIS, Calif. (KFSN) — A woman says her trip in an Uber on the streets of Clovis turned creepy when the driver started asking weird questions and showing her sexually explicit photos. She says she ordered an Uber to simply get her nails done on Sunday afternoon. First, the driver allegedly started asking her questions about if she’s single and if she has any kids. “Next thing he’s talking about sexual things he wants to do to her, so she starts feeling uncomfortable,” said the victim’s friend, Maribel Aguilar. Clovis police say the woman also reported that the driver showed her photos of male genitalia. The passenger said she escaped the vehicle during a red light at Shaw and Peach and believed the driver may have been reaching to try to lock the door as she made her move. Maribel Aguilar is friends with the woman and says she got a hysteric call moments later. “My heart sunk to my stomach, she was calling me — this was a really close friend of mine — she was calling me not only to tell me about

Kenneson & Sanchez Basins complete in Kerman

The extra water in the basins will help prepare for future dry years. Thursday, August 22, 2024 5:34AM After just two years in the making, the Kenneson & Sanchez Groundwater Recharge Basins in Kerman are now complete. KERMAN, Calif. (KFSN) — After just two years in the making, the Kenneson & Sanchez Groundwater Recharge Basins in Kerman are now complete. “As California adapts to a hotter and drier future, these groundwater supplies are becoming more and more valuable as a resource to local farmers, local residents and for the environment,” assistant manager of the division of regional assistance for the CA Department of Water Resources, Matthew Bates said. The 47-acre site on Modoc and Clinton avenues, located in the North Kings Groundwater Sustainability Agency (GSA), creates an opportunity to replenish the groundwater aquifer. “The ability to put almost 1000-acre of recharge water into the underground at this site alone is hugely impactful,” Kassy Chauhan with North Kings GSA said. The Fresno Irrigation District (FID) says this infrastructure helps prepare for future wet years when there is extra rain and snowmelt runoff to capture into the

DNC Day 3 Key Takeaways: Tim Walz’s night, Bill Clinton’s dig at Trump, Oprah’s surprise appearance

CHICAGO — The Democratic National Convention’s third night showcased a familiar former president, Bill Clinton, and introduced more Americans to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, little known outside his state until Vice President Kamala Harris selected him as her running mate. Walz, with his background as a former teacher and football coach, used his speech to put a home-town spin on the Democrats’ agenda of protecting individual freedoms and rejecting what they paint as the intrusive policies of Republican Donald Trump. Wednesday’s program also highlighted plenty of up-and-coming Democratic politicians and media mogul Oprah Winfrey, who gave an energetic speech in support of the party’s ticket. Here are some takeaways from the third night of the DNC. Walz offers himself as Midwestern everyman For years, Republicans have caricatured Democrats as coastal elites who have little in common with ordinary Americans. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz tried to use his biography as a hunter, teacher, football coach and national guardsman from the Midwest to disarm those attacks, which Republicans in the past have wielded with merciless efficiency. His presence on the ticket offers a counterweight in a year

Woman in Southern California goes on violent rampage against firefighter, police

A bizarre and explosive scene unfolded when a woman dressed in black scrubs was seen screaming and taking shots at a Los Angeles County firefighter while he was inside his vehicle Wednesday in Gardena.   According to officials with L.A. County Fire, personnel were called to the scene on Manhattan Beach Boulevard just after 12 p.m. on reports of a traffic collision.   In footage of the incident obtained by KTLA, the woman, who was seemingly outraged, is seen yelling and screaming at the firefighter behind the wheel of a department SUV.   The situation quickly escalates into a physical attack as the woman slaps the public safety officer, at one point balling up her first and pulling back like she was about to punch him in the face. Frank Rojas, who lives on the street and witnessed the incident, pulled his phone out and recorded the tense situation.   A woman in Gardena was taken into custody after she was seen attacking an L.A. Suspected Drunken Driver, Passenger Taken Into Custody After Eluding Officers

A man suspected of drunken driving, along with a passenger, were taken into custody after eluding law enforcement on the Ronald Reagan (118) Freeway from Mission Hills to Pacoima Wednesday evening. Officers began pursuing the vehicle shortly before 9 p.m. as the driver drove on the freeway before traveling on surface streets. Although there was no official confirmation from police, it was presumed that someone in the car tossed a weapon out the window during the chase, according to KCAL. At least three passengers exited the vehicle near Norris Avenue and Pierce Street in Pacoima and took off running. The driver, who was wearing a Toronto Blue Jays cap, eventually surrendered to the police a short time later, along with a passenger who was also located. It was unclear if the other occupants were found and taken into custody. Detectives were continuing their investigation Wednesday evening.
