‘Very Informative’

Editor: Thank you for a very informative editorial about the “complicated, convoluted story” about the property exchange agreement reached with Eureka City Schools (“VTY, Not Rob Arkley,” Aug. 15). I especially liked the article’s lead: “We were taught long ago that if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, chances are pretty good it’s a duck. The old adage came waddling back amid news late last week that AMG Communities-Jacobs, LLC, pulled out of the controversial $6 million property exchange agreement it had reached with Eureka City Schools in December after the district declined its request to extend escrow past the November election.” That definitely made me want to read more. 5 bodies recovered from yacht off Sicily as questions over sinking mount

By Anna Matranga August 22, 2024 / 5:02 AM EDT / CBS News Several bodies recovered from Bayesian’s wreckage Several bodies recovered from wreckage of sunken yacht off Sicilian coast 01:35 Rome — Divers recovered the body of a fifth victim of the Bayesian superyacht wreck Thursday morning, Sicily Civil Protection Chief Salvo Cocina confirmed to CBS News. One person remained missing inside the 184-foot luxury yacht four days after it sank off the coast of Palermo, Sicily, in a severe thunderstorm.  On Wednesday, four bodies were retrieved from the Bayesian, which was on a 90 degree angle on the seafloor at a depth of over 160 feet. The vessel’s position and items that moved around inside the ill-fated yacht have made recovery efforts slow and hazardous. Italian authorities have not officially identified the remains recovered thus far from the Bayesian, which belonged to the wife of British tech magnate Mike Lynch. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was among the 15 survivors of the sinking on Monday, but he and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah were among the six people left missing. Divers of the Vigili del

Deputy charged with killing unarmed man, letting police dog maul someone else

August 22, 2024 / 4:28 AM EDT / CBS/AP 8/21: CBS Evening News 8/21: CBS Evening News 19:46 Columbia, S.C. — A deputy in South Carolina has been charged with voluntary manslaughter and assault after he shot an unarmed suspect five times, killing him, and the deputy’s police dog mauled a different, innocent person, authorities said. State agents arrested former Florence County deputy Treyvon Jonathan Sellers on Wednesday. He was on leave after the May 26 shooting and was fired in July after an arrest in an unrelated domestic violence case. Sellers was awaiting a bond hearing at the Florence County jail on Thursday. Jail records didn’t indicate whether he had a lawyer. Sellers was chasing 43-year-old William Dwayne Rankin when Rankin crashed into a tree and ran into a nearby home near Florence, the State Law Enforcement Division said in a sworn statement. Sellers went into the home through the back door with his police dog, which was not on a leash, and didn’t announce who he was, state agents said. He then ordered the dog to attack without knowing who was inside. The

Uber driver accused of showing passenger lewd photos in Clovis

CLOVIS, Calif. (KFSN) — A woman says her trip in an Uber on the streets of Clovis turned creepy when the driver started asking weird questions and showing her sexually explicit photos. She says she ordered an Uber to simply get her nails done on Sunday afternoon. First, the driver allegedly started asking her questions about if she’s single and if she has any kids. “Next thing he’s talking about sexual things he wants to do to her, so she starts feeling uncomfortable,” said the victim’s friend, Maribel Aguilar. Clovis police say the woman also reported that the driver showed her photos of male genitalia. The passenger said she escaped the vehicle during a red light at Shaw and Peach and believed the driver may have been reaching to try to lock the door as she made her move. Maribel Aguilar is friends with the woman and says she got a hysteric call moments later. “My heart sunk to my stomach, she was calling me — this was a really close friend of mine — she was calling me not only to tell me about

Kenneson & Sanchez Basins complete in Kerman

The extra water in the basins will help prepare for future dry years. Thursday, August 22, 2024 5:34AM After just two years in the making, the Kenneson & Sanchez Groundwater Recharge Basins in Kerman are now complete. KERMAN, Calif. (KFSN) — After just two years in the making, the Kenneson & Sanchez Groundwater Recharge Basins in Kerman are now complete. “As California adapts to a hotter and drier future, these groundwater supplies are becoming more and more valuable as a resource to local farmers, local residents and for the environment,” assistant manager of the division of regional assistance for the CA Department of Water Resources, Matthew Bates said. The 47-acre site on Modoc and Clinton avenues, located in the North Kings Groundwater Sustainability Agency (GSA), creates an opportunity to replenish the groundwater aquifer. “The ability to put almost 1000-acre of recharge water into the underground at this site alone is hugely impactful,” Kassy Chauhan with North Kings GSA said. The Fresno Irrigation District (FID) says this infrastructure helps prepare for future wet years when there is extra rain and snowmelt runoff to capture into the

DNC Day 3 Key Takeaways: Tim Walz’s night, Bill Clinton’s dig at Trump, Oprah’s surprise appearance

CHICAGO — The Democratic National Convention’s third night showcased a familiar former president, Bill Clinton, and introduced more Americans to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, little known outside his state until Vice President Kamala Harris selected him as her running mate. Walz, with his background as a former teacher and football coach, used his speech to put a home-town spin on the Democrats’ agenda of protecting individual freedoms and rejecting what they paint as the intrusive policies of Republican Donald Trump. Wednesday’s program also highlighted plenty of up-and-coming Democratic politicians and media mogul Oprah Winfrey, who gave an energetic speech in support of the party’s ticket. Here are some takeaways from the third night of the DNC. Walz offers himself as Midwestern everyman For years, Republicans have caricatured Democrats as coastal elites who have little in common with ordinary Americans. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz tried to use his biography as a hunter, teacher, football coach and national guardsman from the Midwest to disarm those attacks, which Republicans in the past have wielded with merciless efficiency. His presence on the ticket offers a counterweight in a year

Woman in Southern California goes on violent rampage against firefighter, police

A bizarre and explosive scene unfolded when a woman dressed in black scrubs was seen screaming and taking shots at a Los Angeles County firefighter while he was inside his vehicle Wednesday in Gardena.   According to officials with L.A. County Fire, personnel were called to the scene on Manhattan Beach Boulevard just after 12 p.m. on reports of a traffic collision.   In footage of the incident obtained by KTLA, the woman, who was seemingly outraged, is seen yelling and screaming at the firefighter behind the wheel of a department SUV.   The situation quickly escalates into a physical attack as the woman slaps the public safety officer, at one point balling up her first and pulling back like she was about to punch him in the face. Frank Rojas, who lives on the street and witnessed the incident, pulled his phone out and recorded the tense situation.   A woman in Gardena was taken into custody after she was seen attacking an L.A. Suspected Drunken Driver, Passenger Taken Into Custody After Eluding Officers

A man suspected of drunken driving, along with a passenger, were taken into custody after eluding law enforcement on the Ronald Reagan (118) Freeway from Mission Hills to Pacoima Wednesday evening. Officers began pursuing the vehicle shortly before 9 p.m. as the driver drove on the freeway before traveling on surface streets. Although there was no official confirmation from police, it was presumed that someone in the car tossed a weapon out the window during the chase, according to KCAL. At least three passengers exited the vehicle near Norris Avenue and Pierce Street in Pacoima and took off running. The driver, who was wearing a Toronto Blue Jays cap, eventually surrendered to the police a short time later, along with a passenger who was also located. It was unclear if the other occupants were found and taken into custody. Detectives were continuing their investigation Wednesday evening.

Trump wants to distance himself from Project 2025. Democrats are trying not to let him.

Kenan Thompson, the longest-tenured cast member in “Saturday Night Live” history, strode on to the stage Wednesday night with an oversize book and thumped it heavily onto the lectern: an exaggerated version of Project 2025, a controversial set of conservative policy proposals outlining an agenda for the next Republican president that Democrats have brandished all week. “Y’all remember this big old book, from before?” Thompson asked to roars of laughter from the auditorium. “You ever see a document that could kill a small animal and democracy at the same time? Here it is.” Former President Donald Trump himself is not behind Project 2025, and he and his running mate, JD Vance, have been seeking to distance themselves from the specifics inside the 900-page plan. But that has not stopped Democrats from wielding it as cudgel. Speaker after speaker has referenced the blueprint in Chicago this week, underscoring its sweeping proposals to reshape the federal government, curb abortion rights and climate protections, and drastically reduce immigration into the United States. “If Donald Trump has his way, he’s going to push through their extreme agenda — Project

Nancy Pelosi passes the torch to a new generation at Democratic convention

CHICAGO — Nancy Pelosi Wednesday told Democratic convention delegates and the nation to turn to a new generation of leaders, led by Vice President Kamala Harris – but also reminded everyone she’s still in there slugging away at Republicans. “All thanks to President Biden’s patriotic vision of a fairer America – doing so with liberty and justice for all. Thank you, Joe,” she said. “And I know Vice President Harris is ready to take us to new heights.” Pelosi recalled how she’s known Harris for decades. Pelosi has been a San Francisco congresswoman since 1987. Harris is a former city prosecutor, state attorney general and U.S. senator. Pelosi spent much of her short convention speech reminding listeners about the January 6, 2021 insurrection at the Capitol. “Let us not forget who assaulted democracy on January 6th. He did. But let us not forget who saved democracy that day. We did,” said Pelosi, who at the time was House speaker. She wouldn’t speak former President Donald Trump’s name. Pelosi, 84, stepped down as speaker last year but is still a member of Congress. She reportedly was

As Tijuana sewage keeps spilling over border, federal agency OKs repair and expansion contract for aging plant

An aging, federal wastewater treatment plant at the U.S.-Mexico border that allows Tijuana sewage to foul San Diego’s southern shorelines has finally secured a contractor to begin crucial repairs and double its current capacity. The U.S. International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC), the federal agency that operates the facility, said Wednesday that it had awarded a $42.4 million contract to Long Beach-based PCL Construction. That contract covers the design phase of the multi-phased project, which is expected ultimately to cost as much as $600 million. Officials said the firm hired Stantec Consulting Services of San Diego to carry out the design work. Some construction is anticipated to begin later this year, they added. The project involves rehabilitating several parts of the South Bay International Wastewater Treatment Plant that repeatedly break down and expanding its treatment capacity from 25 million gallons of wastewater per day to 50 million. Federal officials said it could take about five years to complete construction — about a year and a half faster than expected — because the agency awarded the contract using what it calls the progressive design-build contract delivery method. Such

With Dave Roberts in ‘playoff mode,’ surging Dodgers sweep the Mariners

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he was already in “playoff mode” Wednesday, as his club continued to jockey for position in the crowded National League standings. Once October actually arrives, however, he can only hope their potential postseason foes will make life as easy on them as the Seattle Mariners did Wednesday night. In an 8-4, sweep-clinching defeat of the Mariners at Dodger Stadium, the Dodgers got almost as much help from their opponents as they did themselves. At the plate, the Mariners’ listless offense, which entered the night last in the majors in both batting average and strikeouts, continued to pose little discernible threat, allowing Dodgers starter Jack Flaherty to cruise through a 5⅔-inning, two-run (one earned) start. In the field, the Mariners’ sloppy defense turned star pitcher Logan Gilbert into something of a piñata, giving the Dodgers extra chance after extra chance to take a whack at the All-Star right-hander. The result: A stress-free victory that marked the Dodgers’ fourth straight win and 10th in their last 13 games. “You look at the length of our lineup, and what we did with those

Oprah Winfrey steps up for Kamala Harris at the DNC

CHICAGO —  Legendary talk show host and entrepreneur Oprah Winfrey made a surprise speech Wednesday on behalf of Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris, to the delight of the crowd at the party’s convention. In a purple Harris-style suit, Winfrey came out on stage at the Democratic National Convention to Jon Batiste’s “Freedom” and delivered a soaring speech building on themes of personal freedom, which resounded throughout the evening. Without mentioning the name of Harris’ Republican opponent, former President Trump, Winfrey went through a by now familiar litany of the rights the Democrats are willing to defend against attacks. “There are people who want you to see the country as us against them,” she said. “People who want to scare you, who want to rule you. People who have you believe that books are dangerous and assault rifles are safe. That there’s a right way to worship and a wrong way to love.” Often addressing undecideds and independents, Winfrey laid out the choice between Harris and Trump as one of “loyalty to the Constitution over loyalty to any individual.” “Let us choose common sense over nonsense
