JD Vance, at the Democratic convention Wednesday night. “There are people who want you to see our country as a nation of ‘us against them’ — people who want to scare you, who want to rule you,” she said. “People who’d have you believe that books are dangerous and assault rifles are safe, that there’s a right way to worship and a wrong way to love. People who seek first to divide and then to conquer. But here’s the thing — when we stand together, it is impossible to conquer us.”  “Despite what some would have you think, we are not so different from our neighbors,” Winfrey said. “When a house is on fire, we don’t ask about the homeowner’s race or religion, we don’t

A 73-year-old suspected serial killer from Mississippi extradited to Ventura County earlier this month in connection with three strangulation murders nearly a half-century ago pled not guilty at his arraignment Wednesday, officials announced.   In February 2023, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Cold Case Unit began re-examining the deaths of the three women – Kimberly Carol Fritz, Velvet Ann Sanchez and Lorraine Ann Rodriguez – each of whom was killed in 1977, the Ventura County DA’s Office said.   While the exact circumstances surrounding the women’s deaths were not disclosed by the DA, an article published in 1978 in the Utah publication The Daily Herald stated that the three women were prostitutes who were strangled with their own underwear.   Warren Luther Alexander, 73, is charged with three counts of first-degree for the strangulation deaths of three women in Ventura County in 1977. (VCDA) Sanchez was 31 when she was found dead in an Oxnard motel on Sept. 9, 1977, the Daily Herald reported; the 18-year-old Fritz was found in a motel room on May 29 of that year and Rodriguez, then 22, was found dead near a highway in

His wife, Rosa Aguilar, was told by authorities her husband may have nearly caused an accident while driving back home, which enraged another driver. Lupe pulled over at a gas station on the 63000 block of Highway 74 in Mountain Center and parked his truck at around 6:30 p.m. The angry driver arrived shortly after and allegedly confronted Lupe and began pushing him. Fearful of being assaulted, Lupe allegedly ran away from the suspect who was chasing him and eventually jumped over a fence. Annual siren tests to be conducted throughout parts of San Luis Obispo County

Siren tests will be conducted throughout parts of San Luis Obispo County on Saturday, Aug. 24. The tests are part of the County Office of Emergency Services’ Annual Early Warning System Siren Test. Two tests are scheduled to take placethe first at noon and the second at 12:30 p.m. During both tests, 130 sirens will be activated simultaneously for three minutes. They are being tested twice to ensure that both the primary and backup activation points are functioning properly. The noise will be loudest along the coast from Cayucos to Nipomo, according to officials, and it will impact areas as far east as Downtown San Luis Obispo. Extra, extra! Volunteers hit the streets for cancer awareness and support

By dawn, everything was set for the annual Day of Hope event by Dignity Health. Today is a day of celebration and that our cancer patients feel very loved and honored today because we’re right there with them,” said Jessa Brooks, Vice President of Philanthropy at Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria. All it took for volunteers was a safety vest and a stack of newspapers. They hit the streets, asking for donations in exchange for a special edition of the Santa Maria Times. Of course, some groups took it to the next level, like Cynthia Maldonados, whose group was dressed up as Michael Jackson, holding up a sign reading Cancer – just beat it!.We’re all very, very passionate. This is cancer outreach, and so we want to make sure that we’re out here supporting the community,” Maldonado said. Since 2013, Dignity Health has raised over $2 million through Day of Hope newspaper sales and online donations. The money helps local cancer patients and their families, providing crucial support like transportation to and from the hospital for treatment. We have a patient transportation program

Chula Vista OKs pay raises for hundreds of city workers

Chula Vista is giving its workforce a series of pay raises totaling about 15 percent over three years as part of a new contract with its largest employee union. The three-year memorandum of understanding with the Association of Chula Vista Employees received the City Council’s blessing on Tuesday via a 4-1 vote. Under the new accord, more than 450 employees will receive either a 2 percent or 5 percent increase in the next full pay period, 5 percent raises in July 2025 and a final 5 percent in July 2026. Though the contract covers represented employees, non-union workers will be afforded similar pay benefits, according to the city. “It has long been a practice of the City (with few exceptions) to update the compensation and benefit summary for unrepresented employees the same or similar benefit provided to represented employees,” city staff said in a report. The contract also includes a 39 percent increase to the city’s professional enrichment fund, bringing it to $100,000 per year. That fund covers costs for training to improve an employee’s skills or help advance their career. Eligible employees can be reimbursed

Tompkins left the shooting scene in a box truck, and police pulled him over a short time later on Interstate 8 in Mission Valley, where he was arrested. Prosecutors said the killing precipitated a second, retaliatory fatal shooting that took place less than a week later. On Aug. 30, 51-year-old Arthur Williams was sitting in his vehicle near Dennis Allen Memorial Park in the Mount Hope neighborhood when a driver in an SUV pulled alongside his car and opened fire, according to police. Prosecutors allege Williams was an associate of Tompkins. Anthony Goodrich Austin was arrested in March of 2022 in connection with Williams’ killing, with prosecutors saying
