Divers find 5 bodies during search of superyacht wreckage after it sank off Sicily, 1 still missing

ROME — Divers searching the wreck of a superyacht that sank off Sicily found the bodies of five passengers Wednesday and searched for one more as questions intensified about why the vessel sank so quickly when a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed. Rescue crews unloaded three body bags from rescue vessels that pulled into port at Porticello. Salvatore Cocina, head of the Sicily civil protection agency, said two other bodies had also been found in the wreckage for a total of five. The discovery made clear the operation to search the hull on the seabed 50 meters (164 feet) underwater had quickly turned into a recovery one, not a rescue, given the amount of time that had passed and that no signs of life had emerged over three days of searching, maritime experts said. The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometer (a half-mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly. Fifteen people escaped in

North Korean soldier defects to the South, reports say

A North Korean soldier crossed the heavily guarded southeastern border early Tuesday and was taken into custody by South Korean authorities, reports said. The soldier crossed the military demarcation line within the Demilitarized Zone and expressed an intent to defect to South Korea. The South Korean military tracked and monitored the soldier from the moment the person crossed the demarcation line. The South Korean military’s full-scale loudspeaker propaganda on all fronts may have affected the soldier. Loudspeaker propagation on the North can extend as far as 19 miles. The South Korean military is currently evaluating the effectiveness of loudspeaker propagation on the North, which resumed after North’s continued trash balloon dropping last month. North Korea in July resumed flying balloons likely carrying trash toward the South, adding to a bizarre psychological warfare campaign amid growing tensions between the war-divided rivals. TV Chosun, a television network in South Korea, citing an anonymous government source, reported that the “Many of the recent defectors have said they changed their mind after listening to loudspeaker broadcasts at the border, and so did the man who defected on Tuesday.” The

Here are all the songs on the DNC roll call playlist

DNC roll call ends with Harris nomination DNC ceremonial roll call ends with California nominating Kamala Harris for president 05:33 The Democratic National Convention turned a routine roll call into a dance party Tuesday night as Democrats celebrated Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s nominee for the 2024 presidential race.  The ceremonial roll call became a star-studded fest that included a live performance from Lil Jon and a medley of songs from Dolly Parton, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars and others that corresponded to each state and U.S. territory. The roll call concluded with Harris’ home state of California, which was intentionally left until the end, and featured four songs, including two from Kendrick Lamar. Harris later appeared on video from Milwaukee, where she was holding a rally, and thanked supporters for nominating her. The playlist was put together by celebrity DJ Cassidy, who posted his setlist on his Spotify.  Lil Jon performs as he joins the Georgia delegation during the ceremonial roll call vote on the second day of the Democratic National Convention.  MANDEL NGAN/AFP via Getty Images Following the event, DJ Cassidy told Rolling

Hundreds of proposals in Project 2025 match Trump’s policies

By John Kelly August 21, 2024 / 5:36 PM EDT / CBS News What is the conservative-led Project 2025? Trump distancing himself from Project 2025 built by his former staffers 05:43 Former President Donald Trump has repeatedly disavowed Project 2025 , the conservative wish list organized by the Heritage Foundation, saying the plan is not his and contains some “terrible ideas.” But a line-by-line review by CBS News identified at least 270 proposals in Project 2025’s published blueprint for the next Republican president that match Trump’s past policies and current campaign promises. CBS News’ data team extracted more than 700 specific policy proposals from Project 2025’s 922-page policy guide and compared each one to policies enacted during Trump’s first term as well as his campaign platform, rally speeches and interviews. From shuttering the Department of Education to excising every mention of diversity, equity and inclusion from federal agencies’ projects and programs, the Project 2025 agenda often matches Trump’s recorded words and his Administration’s deeds. Within Project 2025, CBS News identified: At least 80 proposals that would revive executive orders and other policies of Trump’s own

Sikh separatist leader attacked by gunfire on California interstate

(Irfan Khan/Los Angeles Times) Gunmen fired at a truck transporting a Sikh leader near Sacramento in what his organization believes to be an assassination attempt. It comes amid several incidents targeting Sikh separatists in North America in recent months. Satinder Pal Singh Raju, an active organizer in the Khalistan movement, which calls for Sikhs to have a country of their own, survived the attack on Interstate 505 about 30 miles west of Sacramento in unincorporated Yolo County. California Highway Patrol was notified of the incident at 11:37 p.m. on Aug. 11, CHP spokesperson Rodney Fitzhugh said. Video posted on social media by Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, lawyer and spokesperson for Sikhs for Justice, shows four bullet holes in the driver’s window of Raju’s car, with two additional dents on the front window near the passenger’s side. Pannun was the target of a foiled assassination attempt in the U.S. in 2023. He has been charged with terrorism in India for advocating for an independent Sikh state and clashed with the ruling government of Narendra Modi. “Modi 3.0 Regime is continuing with its policy of transnational repression to

Column: The Democratic convention takes the phrase ‘political lovefest’ to a new level

Watching Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff address the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday night, it was difficult not to wonder if my TV had somehow tuned in to a summer rom-com instead. Introduced by a sweet and funny “this is my dad” video, narrated by his son, Cole, and produced by his ex-wife, Kerstin, Emhoff recounted his courtship of and marriage to Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris. He discussed it all: The blind date setup, the first embarrassing phone message he left her (which she saved and plays on their wedding anniversary), the deftness with which she navigated the complications of becoming “Momala” in a blended family, even the joining of two faiths — the couple goes to church on Easter Sunday and Harris makes “a mean brisket for Passover.” Watching a man, who left his successful law firm when Harris became vice president, extol the presidential virtues of a wife he clearly adores was enough to make this the most romantic political convention ever. But it was just one scene in an event that, in attempting to rally “joyful warriors” to the Harris-Walz campaign, has

Russell Simmons defends Taraji P. Henson’s Bali visit, lists contributions to Black groups

Russell Simmons has gone on the defensive after critics called out actor Taraji P. Henson for spending time with the embattled hip-hop impresario and entrepreneur at his Bali resort. Simmons, 66, told them to “knock it off” in the wake of backlash that was sparked when Simmons posted a photo of himself with “The Color Purple” star in Indonesia. Many voiced their grievances with Henson for hobnobbing with someone who has been accused of sexual assault. The Def Jam Recordings co-founder has been hit with allegations of sexual misconduct, rape and defamation for years and is the defendant in sexual assault and defamation lawsuits filed in February. But he sidestepped those details in his video response posted Tuesday on Instagram Live and called out Black people who “demonize” him but support former President Trump. He also enumerated his contributions to the Black community and rejected the idea that he is “hiding” to evade legal consequences. “Black people, did you forget that I got 10,000 Black men out of jail? And that I changed the factory farming industry forever? And that I registered more of you

Richard Simmons’ cause of death disclosed by fitness guru’s brother: ‘Accidental’

Officially, Richard Simmons’ cause of death remains deferred, but his brother Lenny is speaking out about how the fitness guru died. “The Coroner informed Lenny that Richard’s death was accidental due to complications from recent falls and heart disease as a contributing factor,” family spokesperson Tom Estey told People in a statement published Wednesday. Estey added that Simmons’ toxicology report came back negative for drugs other “than the medication Richard had been prescribed.” A spokesperson for the Los Angeles medical examiner did not confirm the details of Simmons’ death, but told The Times Wednesday that his cause of death and autopsy report “are not yet finalized.” Lenny disclosed information about his brother’s death after the self-proclaimed Weight Saint, who built an exercise-video empire and was known for his energy and bright and bedazzled outfits, died July 13. He died a day after celebrating his 76th birthday. Simmons’ brother also seemingly confirmed reports that the pop culture icon died after falling at his home in Los Angeles, which TMZ reported in July. Federal judge tours West L.A. VA campus amid lawsuit over housing

U.S. District Judge David Carter toured the Veterans Affairs campus in West Los Angeles on Wednesday as part of a lawsuit alleging that the VA has failed to provide sufficient permanent housing for homeless military veterans. The lawsuit, filed by veterans’ advocacy groups, claims the VA has not lived up to a 2015 settlement agreement. This agreement required the VA to convert a portion of the 388-acre campus into permanent supportive housing for homeless veterans. A master plan called for 1,200 units, of which only 233 have been completed, the Los Angeles Times reported. Why isn’t the VA providing more shelter for homeless veterans in L.A.? Plaintiffs argue that the VA’s progress has been inadequate, citing delays in construction and insufficient development of housing units. They also claim that the VA has not fully implemented required support services, including mental health care and job training. The Department of Veterans Affairs argues it is making significant progress and remains committed to fulfilling the settlement terms.

Mayor Bass Highlights Safety Measures For LAUSD Schools

With the 2024-25 school year underway, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass Wednesday highlighted new safety measures aimed at bolstering road safety around LAUSD campuses. During a news conference at Van Nuys Elementary School in the San Fernando Valley, Bass touted the success the city has had in adding hundreds of speed humps and hiring more crossing guards than in previous years. Los Angeles City Council President Paul Krekorian, LAUSD Board of Education member Scott Schmerelson and Superintendent Alberto Carvalho joined the mayor to commend the safety measures. “Today, we are highlighting urgent action the city has taken in collaboration with LAUSD, including the installation of more than 250 speed humps near schools to slow down car traffic, and more than 500 crossing guards to make it safer for children and families to get to and from school,” Bass said in a statement. “This is all part of a comprehensive public safety strategy to make all of Los Angeles safer.” According to the mayor’s office, city departments completed projects to make areas around some schools safer prior to the first day of school on Aug. 12

Family: Richard Simmons’ Death Accidental Due to Recent Falls

The cause of fitness guru Richard Simmons’s death has been deemed to be accidental, primarily due to “recent falls,” his family announced Wednesday. Simmons was found dead July 13 in his Hollywood Hills home, one day after celebrating his 76th birthday. His official cause of death still has not been publicly released by the Los Angeles Office of Medical Examiner, but a spokesman for the family issued a statement Wednesday saying the office provided details to Simmons’ brother. “This morning, Richard Simmons’ brother Lenny, received a call from the LA Coroner’s office,” spokesman Tom Estey said in the statement, initially provided to People magazine. “The coroner informed Lenny that Richard’s death was accidental due to complications from recent falls and heart disease as a contributing factor. The toxicology report was negative other than medication Richard had been prescribed. The family wishes to thank everyone for their outpouring of love and support during this time of great loss.” Shortly after Simmons’ death, TMZ reported that the well-known fitness icon had fallen in his bathroom the night of his birthday but refused to go to a hospital.

Tim Walz and Bill Clinton headline the Democrats’ third day, focusing on a ‘fight for our freedoms’

By STEVE PEOPLES, JONATHAN J. COOPER and ZEKE MILLER CHICAGO (AP) — Vice presidential nominee Tim Walz and former President Bill Clinton are headlining the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday, the third day of the party’s choreographed rollout of a new candidate, Kamala Harris, and her pitch to voters. Walz faces dual tasks in his speech in Chicago. The Minnesota governor, who has become known among supporters as a folksy, Midwestern teacher, coach and dad, will introduce himself to the rest of the country. He’ll also need to articulate the campaign’s central message, and theme for the evening: that a second Donald Trump term would imperil American liberties. The third night of the convention marks a transition from Tuesday’s exuberant party atmosphere to a theme that organizers have dubbed “a fight for our freedoms.” Harris is portraying former President Trump as a threat to democracy in general as well as to abortion rights and other personal choices in particular. To help shepherd the campaign’s message, Walz will be joined by Clinton – a veteran of the political convention speech — as well as a mix
