DNC centers abortion rights as women tell personal stories

Texas mother Kate Cox on reproductive rights Texas mother Kate Cox on reproductive rights 02:56 Texas mom of two Kate Cox said she was never a political person before she was denied an abortion last year for a pregnancy doctors told her wouldn’t survive , and would risk the possibility of any future pregnancies. But on Tuesday night, she stood to help cast Texas’ vote for nominee Kamala Harris in the Democratic National Convention roll call, announcing she’s pregnant again with a baby due in January — she says, because of the abortion she was able to access out of state.  Cox is one of the multiple women sharing her story at the DNC this week, as Democrats highlight what they call extreme abortion bans in many states in the wake of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade in 2022. Although former President Donald Trump has said he wouldn’t call for a national abortion ban, Trump told CBS News in an interview this week that he has “no regrets” about the overturning of Roe, something made possible by the conservative justices he nominated to

2 guilty in “brutal revenge killings” of man and woman kidnapped in D.C.

Two men have been convicted in a complex and deadly scheme that authorities described as “brutal revenge killings.” Ending a four-week criminal trial, a federal jury found 26-year-old Malique Lewis and 28-year-old Marcel Vines guilty in the armed kidnappings, and ensuing murders, of Armani Nico Coles and Kerrice Lewis in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 28, 2017. Malique Lewis and Kerrice Lewis are not related.  The U.S. Attorney’s Office in D.C. announced the verdict for Lewis, who went by the name “Freak,” and Vines, who went by “Baby Boy,” on Monday and said that U.S. District Court Judge Dabney L. Friedrich would schedule sentencing for both men in the coming days. Each faces two mandatory minimum sentences of life imprisonment, to be served consecutively, according to the office. Prosecutors argued during the trial that Lewis and Vines, while conspiring with a third co-defendant — Ashton Briscoe, who wasn’t paired with the other two men in court proceedings after 2022 — forged a plan to kidnap and kill the two victims “out of a desire for revenge.” Their motivation, authorities said, was the death of their friend

Teen found shot to death in Hesperia dirt field; acquaintances arrested

Two acquaintances of a man found shot to death in a Hesperia dirt field have been arrested in connection with his murder, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. Aaron Neal, 19, was found “deceased with obvious signs of trauma” just after 6:45 a.m. Monday in a field near the intersection of Sultana Street and Escondido Avenue, authorities said in a news release. Investigators tied Hesperia residents Demetrial Richine Tyler, 21, and Elaina Nicole Norman, 20, “who were known to Neal,” to the killing, and they were arrested at Tyler’s home, authorities said. Deputies did not disclose a possible motive for the attack. Norman is being held without bail at the West Valley Detention Center and is due to appear in Victorville Superior Court on Thursday for a murder charge. Former Trump official reveals more about him being ‘mad’ in an ICU

Former President Trump’s onetime White House press secretary, Stephanie Grisham, told delegates at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday that Trump was upset that cameras were not on him when he visited an ICU. What she didn’t mention: The scene followed a mass shooting in El Paso. On Wednesday, Olivia Troye, a former White House national security official under Trump, filled in the blanks. “She’s talking about the day of the El Paso shooting,” Troye said on CNN Newsroom with Jim Acosta. Grisham, who said she would be voting for Vice President Kamala Harris, told delegates on Tuesday night that Trump mocked his supporters and referred to them as “basement dwellers.” “I saw him when the cameras were off,” Grisham said. “On a hospital visit one time, when people were dying in the ICU, he was mad that cameras were not watching him. He has no empathy. No morals. And no fidelity to the truth.” Troye, who is from El Paso, Texas, said her aunt was inside the Walmart that day. “That was very personal for me,” Troye told Acosta. In 2019, a white gunman

Sea lions take over beach in Monterey’s Cannery Row

It isn’t bacteria-tainted water or a sewage leak that’s forced the closure of one of Monterey’s beaches in the middle of its summer tourist season. It’s a huge colony of sea lions, who have decided to occupy a stretch of San Carlos Beach on busy Cannery Row instead of their normal rocky sanctuary a short distance away. And by the looks of it, the pinnipeds won’t be leaving anytime soon. The group of mostly male sea lions travels every year from the Channel Islands to rest and feed and they usually stay along adjacent beaches but this time, they decided to call San Carlos Beach their home, city spokesperson Laurie Huelga said. City officials don’t know when the sea lions, who’ve already been at the beach for two weeks, will leave but they usually stay between three and four weeks, Huelga said. The city’s parks staff has been working with the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary to monitor the animals. “We want residents and visitors to be safe while visiting the coastline, and remind you to enjoy and watch the sea lions from a distance

The rise of the multipart TikTok saga: Life after ‘Who TF Did I Marry?!?’

Scrolling through TikTok, interspersed with cooking tutorials, outfit checks and dance challenges, storytimes are dominating For You Pages. They’re videos of creators sharing vulnerable experiences, or “lore,” as they like to call it. Since early 2022, the app has allowed videos up to 10 minutes in length, but for some of the epic storytimes on the platform, 10 minutes is simply not enough time. Second, third and 10th parts of video series are now crowding the app more frequently. Just like TV cliffhangers, videos often end on a suspenseful note, building anticipation for the next installment. Of course, there is no one path to virality. The app lends itself to short content, with the average video length for accounts with fewer than 50,000 followers clocking in at 35 seconds, according to the data gathering platform Statista. More popular accounts tend to produce content with an average length of 55 seconds. But there’s no doubt that long-form storytelling is on the rise. Most recently, no one has done it bigger and better than Tareasa Johnson. Johnson, known online as Reesa Teesa, started posting her “Who TF

Is Naomi Osaka ‘too happy’ at U.S. Open? Chris Evert says ‘that can’t always be good’

Naomi Osaka’s comeback season has been pocked by fits and starts as she reacquaints herself with her athleticism and competitive fire. She hasn’t played especially good tennis, but her body language, frequent smiles and playful interactions with fans indicate her state of mind is much better than it was when she walked away from the sport in 2021. On a conference call to promote the upcoming U.S. Open in New York, 18-time major champion Chris Evert openly wondered whether Osaka can compete anywhere close to the level she established when she won the major in 2018 and 2020. Is Osaka too content? “She’s going through some doubtful times,” Evert said. “We’ll see if she can get that magic, because it is the U.S. Open. She has won this title, so let’s see if she can get that magic going. I think her story, her journey, remains to be seen.” A year after Osaka gave birth to her daughter and eight months into her return to competitive tennis, the 26-year-old who was born in Japan and raised on Long Island seems intent on enjoying the return

Jurors found her guilty in May of aggravated child endangerment and first-degree murder in the commission of a felony. Belair testified at her trial that she removed a loaded 9mm handgun from her diaper bag and placed it on the couch next to her in October while she was home with her 4-year-old daughter, Lawrencia Perez-Belair, and her 2-year-old son and 1-year-old daughter. She said she had planned to go get food with her family and was making sure she had everything she needed in the bag. She said Lawrencia then “distracted” her by asking her to take a cellphone photo of

How much would a $75,000 HELOC cost per month?

We may receive commissions from some links to products on this page. Promotions are subject to availability and retailer terms. A $75,000 HELOC could be the solution to your borrowing needs — but make sure you know the true costs first. Getty Images With borrowing rates still high overall, many homeowners have been turning to their home equity as a way to tap into the funds they need at an affordable rate. After all, the average homeowner currently has about $200,000 in accessible home equity alone, and about $300,000 in total equity, meaning that they have plenty of funds to borrow from. Plus, your home is used as collateral when you tap into your equity, which typically results in securing a more favorable interest rate — especially compared to unsecured loans.  But the landscape for home equity borrowing could become even more attractive soon. Inflation has cooled significantly over the last four months, and the Federal Reserve is now expected to conduct its first rate cut of the year when it meets in September. That could have an impact on the rates being offered on

Tim Walz and Bill Clinton headline the Democrats’ third day with a focus on ‘fight for freedoms’

By STEVE PEOPLES, JONATHAN J. COOPER and ZEKE MILLER CHICAGO (AP) — Vice presidential nominee Tim Walz and former President Bill Clinton are headlining the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday, the third day of the party’s choreographed rollout of a new candidate, Kamala Harris, and her pitch to voters. Walz faces dual tasks in his speech in Chicago. The Minnesota governor, who has become known among supporters as a folksy, Midwestern teacher, coach and dad, will introduce himself to the rest of the country. He’ll also need to articulate the campaign’s central message, and theme for the evening: that a second Donald Trump term would imperil American liberties. The third night of the convention marks a transition from Tuesday’s exuberant party atmosphere to a theme that organizers have dubbed “a fight for our freedoms.” Harris is portraying former President Trump as a threat to democracy in general as well as to abortion rights and other personal choices in particular. To help shepherd the campaign’s message, Walz will be joined by Clinton – a veteran of the political convention speech — as well as a mix
