Kurtenbach: The A’s finally look worthwhile. It’s just another gut-punch for Oakland

OAKLAND — There’s something downright cruel about it. Sadly, such a punishment is not unusual from the Oakland Athletics. Of course, the A’s developed into a team worth watching just before they head out of The Town. Yes, there’s something to these 2024 A’s. They’ve won back-to-back straight series, sit in the middle of the American League West standings (above the Astros), and have arguably the best 1-2 end-of-game bullpen punch in baseball right now. They’re young, homegrown, punchy, and now that they’ve started hitting a bit (10th in baseball in OPS over the last 15 games), they’ve become quite interesting. Now, I don’t think the A’s are going to close out the Coliseum with a World Series win, or even playoff baseball, but while this organization might not be building a ballpark in Oakland — or Las Vegas, for that matter — early returns suggest that the front office has, against all odds and the will of their owner, built another worthwhile team. These guys might just be mediocre. And I mean that as a compliment. After all, in the modern game, mediocre pays

Fruit salsas are a good addition for Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo is right around the corner, so fruit salsas come to mind to complement any dish. This is the perfect time of year to find fresh, ripe, juicy pineapples, mangos, strawberries, and even avocados. Mango seasons tend to be from May through September whereas pineapple seasons tend to be from March through the summer. Growing up in SoCal, I have eaten many salsas – mostly savory, but some on the sweeter side – but now salsas don’t just equal a tomato or tomatillo-base any more. Fresh in-season fruit is very popular in creating fruit salsas and condiments for dishes. Strawberries that are macerated with a pinch of sugar and salt, with thinly diced bell peppers, makes for a perfect salsa-condiment to add to vanilla or strawberry ice cream or frozen yogurt. Growing up in SoCal, I was lucky enough to try the best authentic Mexican street food north and south of the border, and what I learned from a young age was an out-of-this-world salsa or marinade pushes a dish from being just good to being amazing and craveable. Ingredients included in a

If it’s horse racing season, it’s time for the Maryland mint julep

Baltimoreans’ mint patches are springing to life, a harbinger of the mint julep season which is upon us with the 150th running Saturday of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, followed several weeks later by the 149th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course. That being said, for many Marylanders the venerable Maryland Hunt Cup, which raced across the Worthington Valley Saturday, is not a mere dress rehearsal, but the actual observance of Opening Day and the happy marriage of crushed mint, simple syrup, rye or bourbon and LOTS of crushed ice stuffed into an ancestral silver julep cup from Kirk or Stieff, the once legendary Baltimore silver manufacturers. While generals Grant and Lee may have buried the sword at Virginia’s Appomattox Court House in 1865, the War of the Juleps continues to this day as the great liquid battle between Maryland rye and Kentucky bourbon, and which should be employed in a julep. And there are numerous codicils to the julep making process. Should the mint be muddled or allowed to ooze its fragrant juices? Should the ice be crushed, shaved or beaten in a bar rag into

Is Clippers’ series over? ‘Dallas to Cancun’ ad near Crypto.com Arena trolls Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks probably have not made their summer vacation plans just yet. With their first-round Western Conference playoff series with the Clippers tied at 2-2, the Mavericks could see their season end as early as Friday night. In that case, the Dallas players might actually appreciate the contents of a billboard that’s near Crypto.com Arena for Game 5 on Wednesday night. But probably not. The ad at L.A. Live was placed by global travel company Skyscanner on the building at 1011 S. Figueroa St., just across Chick Hearn Court from the Clippers’ current home facility. It reads in big letters, “Dallas to Cancun.” In smaller print underneath, it says, “For great flights to Cancun, visit Skyscanner.” There’s no mention of the NBA, its teams or the playoffs, but the implication is clear — time for the Mavericks to start planning their vacations because this series is essentially over. Andre Le Masurier, the global head of brand at Skyscanner, told The Times in an email Wednesday that the idea behind the billboard was “not so much to solely troll the Mavs, just to have some

Controversial recount breaks tie in Silicon Valley congressional race

After more than two weeks of recounting and several contested ballots, the verdict in California’s 16th Congressional District is in. Assemblymember Evan Low has narrowly edged out Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian for second place, meaning Low will continue to the November ballot alongside first-place finisher former San José Mayor Sam Liccardo. Low gained 12 votes during the recount and Simitian gained seven. That shift gave Low a five-vote advantage, dashing Simitian’s chances of replacing retiring Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-Menlo Park) to represent a coveted, safely Democratic Northern California district. The unprecedented second-place congressional tie meant that all three candidates would have appeared on the November ballot, had the results held. The three-way race would have been a first since the state shifted to its nonpartisan primary system in 2012, which dictates that the top two finishers advance to the November ballot regardless of party affiliation. Wednesday’s recount results come after an astounding month in Silicon Valley politics, with a race that has roiled local affairs, engendered an atmospheric river’s worth of mudslinging and added a layer of uncertainty to the coming general election.

Acting as if they won the draft lottery, Sparks say ‘we’re going to shock a lot of people’

In a suite in the arena they’ll soon call home, the Sparks’ three draft picks mingled with the Showtime Lakers. Cameron Brink, Rickea Jackson and McKenzie Forbes rubbed elbows with Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Michael Cooper. The former NBA stars who were being honored at halftime of a Lakers playoff game last week shared stories of their success in a city that demands nothing less. It was, as Brink said, the “perfect welcome to L.A.” But it was just the start. “We came in to help make a difference,” the No. 2 overall draft pick said, “to help this team win.” The most anticipated Sparks draft picks of the last decade take center stage as the team begins a new era. The Sparks open their season on May 15 against the Atlanta Dream at 7 p.m. at Long Beach’s Walter Pyramid. The franchise is mired in its longest playoff drought in history, a three-season dry spell that has spanned two head coaches. On Wednesday at the team’s preseason media day, coach Curt Miller shied away from putting a timetable on when the organization will

UC president launches investigation into how UCLA handled violent demonstrations at pro-Palestinian encampment

Michael Drake, the University of California’s systemwide president, has opened an investigation into how UCLA handled the violence that unfolded at a pro-Palestinian encampment on Tuesday night. In a letter to UC’s board of regents, Drake said he requested a “detailed accounting from the campus about what transpired” and ordered an “independent review of the university’s planning, its actions and the response by law enforcement.” “I believe such a review can address many of my immediate questions but also help guide us for possible future events,” Drake wrote in the letter, which was first reported by the Los Angeles Times. UCLA’s night of violence in photos The investigation comes after about 50 counter-protesters wearing dark clothing, hoods and white masks covering their faces stormed the barricade surrounding the encampment, trying to tear it down.
