How two high school students solved a 2,000-year-old math puzzle

By Bill Whitaker, Aliza Chasan, Sara Kuzmarov, Mariah Campbell May 5, 2024 / 7:00 PM EDT / CBS News Teens’ innovative Pythagorean Theorem work Teens surprise math world with Pythagorean Theorem trigonometry proof | 60 Minutes 13:19 A high school math teacher at St. Mary’s Academy in New Orleans, Michelle Blouin Williams, was looking for ingenuity when she and her colleagues set a school-wide math contest with a challenging bonus question. That bonus question asked students to create a new proof for the Pythagorean Theorem, a fundamental principle of geometry, using trigonometry. The teachers weren’t necessarily expecting anyone to solve it, as proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem using trigonometry were believed to be impossible for nearly 2,000 years. But then, in December 2022, Calcea Johnson and Ne’Kiya Jackson, seniors at St. Mary’s Academy, stepped up to the challenge. The $500 prize money was a motivating factor. After months of work, they submitted their innovative proofs to their teachers. With the contest behind them, their teachers encouraged the students to present at a mathematics conference, and then to seek to publish their work. And even today

Oakland: Driver fatally shot in broad daylight near Lake Merritt

OAKLAND — A man was fatally shot Sunday while driving along Lake Merritt and crashed his vehicle into a nearby motel parking lot, creating a public crime scene but no immediate clarity on why he was attacked, authorities said. The driver was traveling east on Lake Merritt Boulevard, just before it turns into First Avenue at East 12th Street, around 11:55 a.m. when he was shot by an unknown assailant, according to Oakland police. Wounded, the man continued driving his Honda Odyssey minivan and crashed through a fence of an Americas Best Value Inn motel located a half-block south of the intersection where the shooting was reported. The vehicle hit two parked cars the motel’s lot before coming to a stop. The driver, who was the sole occupant of the minivan, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been publicly released pending his formal identification and notification of his next of kin by the Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau. Scranton’s Mason Black set to make ‘storybook’ MLB debut at Citizens Bank Park

PHILADELPHIA — Like many of us, Mason Black remembers the first ballgame he attended. He wasn’t yet 10 years old when his family made the 2-hour trek from their northeastern Pennsylvania home to Citizens Bank Park. They sat in right field, part of Pat Burrell’s cheering section. On Monday, more than a decade later, Black will be a little further away from those outfield seats. The 24-year-old right-hander from Scranton will toe the rubber sometime after 4:05 p.m. local time and throw the first pitch of his major-league career in the ballpark where he nurtured a nascent love for the sport. “I would say it’s kind of a storybook tale there,” Black said Sunday afternoon at his visitor’s clubhouse locker. “Being so close to home, hopefully having a chance to have a lot of people come out and see, it’s really exciting. … I have good memories here.” Black will be the fourth option the Giants have used to cover Blake Snell’s vacant spot in the starting rotation. They are 0-6 in those turns through the rotation, outscored 55-12, but if his performance through the

By JAMIE STENGLE and LEKAN OYEKANMI (Associated Press) HOUSTON (AP) — Storms in Texas brought additional rain Sunday to the already saturated Houston area, where hundreds of people have been rescued from flooded homes and roads. To the north in the Fort Worth area, a child died after being swept away when the car he was in got stuck in floodwaters. ‘Celebrating Chicano culture’: San Jose parades for Cinco de Mayo

When he was raising his kids, Moses Castro would take them to downtown San Jose for the Cinco de Mayo parade — “we would go every year,” he said. Three decades later, he still goes — but these days, he’s bringing his grandkids. “It showed me the Mexican culture — and that’s what Cinco de Mayo is really about,” said Castro’s 10-year-old granddaughter Carmelita Rodriguez as she watched a group of Aztec dancers strut by in feathered headdresses and sparkling outfits. “I don’t really get to see my Mexican culture that much — it’s only once a year.” Cinco de Mayo began as a commemoration for Mexico’s victory over French forces in the Battle of Puebla in 1862, but has morphed into a celebration of Mexican-American pride. San Jose’s festivities were spread out over two days, beginning Saturday with a car show near the SAP Center and salsa dancing festival, and culminating on Sunday with two parades in downtown and East San Jose. UCLA to Create New Office of Campus Safety

UCLA Chancellor Gene Block announced a newly created Office of Campus Safety Sunday to administer policing and emergency management in the aftermath of campus unrest over pro-Palestinian demonstrations. The school had came under heavy criticism for its response to violence that broke out at a protest encampment last week, with Gov. Gavin Newsom and other elected officials calling for investigations into the university’s reaction, and some critics even calling on Block to resign ahead of his previously announced plan to step down on July 31. “In the past week, our campus has been shaken by events that have disturbed this sense of safety and strained trust within our community,” Block said in a message to the UCLA community Sunday. “In light of this, both UCLA and the UC Office of the President have committed to a thorough investigation of our security processes. But one thing is already clear: To best protect our community moving forward, urgent changes are needed in how we administer safety operations. “I am therefore taking several actions to significantly alter our campus safety structure. … Effective immediately, I am moving oversight

Pro-Palestinian Encampment at USC Cleared By Police

A pro-Palestinian encampment in the middle of USC’s main campus was cleared Sunday morning by officers with the Los Angeles Police Department and USC’s Department of Public Safety, ending a high-profile demonstration that began in April. No arrests or major confrontations were reported, but the campus was closed for several hours. “This morning DPS, with the assistance of the LAPD, removed the occupiers who had rebuilt their illegal encampment in Alumni Park. The operation was peaceful. Campus is opening, students are returning to prepare for finals, and commencement set-up is in full swing,” USC President Carol Folt said in a statement released around midday Sunday. “Over the last few weeks, the university exercised patience and restraint as we worked to de-escalate a volatile situation. We’ve spoken to the occupiers daily, issued repeated warnings, and offered opportunities and locations for them to protest lawfully. We’ve supported their right to express strong opinions and passions for their cause, as always,” she continued. “Yet when free speech protests devolve into illegal occupations, violating the rights of others, we must draw a line. … We are in the critical

Wild weekend of diss tracks: Beef between Drake and Kendrick Lamar comes to a head

Canadian superstar Drake and legendary Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar continued to trade blows over the weekend, releasing multiple scathing diss tracks that took shots at each other’s personal lives as the feud between them continues.  The war of words began in March after Kendrick targeted Drake and his tour partner J. Cole on the song “Like That” by Atlanta rapper Future and producer Metro Boomin from their collaborative album “We Don’t Trust You.”  Among the lines from the Compton MC’s incendiary guest verse were allusions to hip hop’s “Big Three” of Drake, J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar, who are three of the most successful rap artists of the 2010s. Kendrick also took several bars from Drake and Cole’s collaboration “First Person Shooter,” which included a line about all three rappers, and used them to tell the duo that their legacies won’t outlive his.  Cole was the first to respond to Kendrick’s “Like That” verse, releasing a diss track towards him titled “7 Minute Drill” on April 5.   The song was removed from streaming services a week later after Cole publicly bowed out of the

Canelo Álvarez accused of blocking two media critics from covering his fight

LAS VEGAS —  Before his win over Jaime Munguia, Canelo Álvarez was accused of influencing the denial of credentials for two well-known sports reporters, Ricardo Celis and David Faitelson. Celis, a broadcaster who has called Álvarez’s fights for DAZN since 2018, was replaced on the microphone by Jaime Motta. Celis, with more than 35 years in boxing, said Álvarez’s team requested that he not be part of the broadcast. Celis also is a commentator on the independent site ProBox TV, alongside Juan Manuel Marquez, a former world champion and well-known Álvarez critic. Celis was told a month ago he was going to be the play-by-play voice of the Saturday’s bout along with Claudia Trejos, his partner at DAZN, and planned to travel to Las Vegas on Wednesday. However, on Tuesday he was notified he would not be part of the broadcast team at Álvarez’s request. “Our job there is to talk about boxing. Not everything we do paints them rosy, because that’s not the way the world is,” said Celis, a contract employee for DAZN. “Canelo sometimes does good things and we say it, and sometimes
