Chaffey College Fashion Show will feature designs of 14 students

The Chaffey College Fashion Show, featuring design collections of 14 students, will take place 6-8 p.m. May 3 at the Chino Community Center, 5890 College Park Ave., Chino. “You’ll see the creativity that our students have,” said Chaffey Fashion Program Coordinator Tara Johnson, coordinator of Chaffey’s fashion program, said in a news release. “We don’t limit them and we want them to be their true selves.” Chaffey has held fashion shows featuring student work for the past 15 years, but had to put the event on hold for several years because of the pandemic. This year’s event will not only showcase the work of Chaffey’s fashion design and fashion merchandising programs, but also decorations from the interior design program and hors d’oeuvres by culinary arts and hospitality management students. In the college’s fashion program, students identify their target customers and conduct demographic and cost analysis. They also learn logo design and resume building, among other skills. The fashion industry is growing in Southern California, with more than 5,000 jobs available in the Los Angeles, Orange County and Inland Empire areas, according to the news release.

South Bay meets Southern Hospitality: What Los Gatos baseball team learned from trip to rural Tennessee

Like many baseball teams in the Bay Area, Los Gatos spent a week away from home playing non-league teams.  But instead of taking on other opponents from the West Coast, the Wildcats traveled down to middle Tennessee, playing unfamiliar programs like Friendship Christian and Overton in a small town called Lebanon. Located around 45 minutes east of the state capitol and a world away from what the South Bay natives were used to, the teenagers grew to appreciate the state that coach Mike Minkel spent his college years. “They saw a lot of respect for strangers and people you’ve never met before,” said Minkel, who went to school at Cumberland in Lebanon. “A lot of time spent holding doors for people and going out of your way to be kind when you don’t have to be.” Despite both graduating from the same NAIA program in the 2000’s, both Minkel and his assistant coach Eric Mull still have plenty of friends in the area, making it possible to plan games and put together events with help from locals.  Los Gatos won all three games in the

Cirque du Soleil makes high-flying return to San Jose

If you’ve driven near the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds recently, you surely noticed Cirque du Soleil’s majestic big top — known as the Grand Chapiteau to fans — has risen in the fairgrounds parking lot. With the delightful “Kooza,” Cirque is back in town with all its tents for the first time since 2019, not counting an arena show last year at SAP Center. The show itself is loaded with all the crowd-pleasing antics and mind-blowing acrobatics that you’d expect from the touring French-Canadian troupe. If you don’t leave the show feeling elated and a little awestruck, that may be on you. Performers clown around with a member of the audience, far right, during Cirque du Soleil’s “Kooza,” at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds in San Jose on Thursday, April 25, 2024. (Sal Pizarro/Bay Area News Group)  And fair warning to anyone in an aisle seat close to the stage: You might just get brought onstage for a fun bit as one unsuspecting audience member did Thursday night. But after seeing the show Thursday night, I was most surprised by how much better the Fairgrounds

Will you have a three-payday May?

(NEXSTAR) — If you weren’t paid on Friday, you’re most likely on track for a “fund”-filled May. For some, May will be a three-paycheck (or five-paycheck) month. The easiest way to tell if you will get an extra paycheck in May is to check your bank account. If you were paid on Thursday or Friday, you won’t see an additional check in May. If you weren’t paid at the end of last week, you’re in line for a three-payday May. Those paydays will fall on May 3, May 17 and May 31 — unless you’re paid on Thursdays, then they will each come a day earlier. These bonus paycheck months happen four times a year, but if you aren’t paid weekly, you will only benefit from it twice. The most recent occurrence was in March, at least for those who receive their wages on Fridays (those paid bi-weekly on Thursdays missed out by a day). If you received an extra paycheck in March, you won’t get one in May. While disappointing now, you’re still being paid the same throughout the year. Here’s why. Airlines must

Homegoing Celebration for Cecil Murray Set at First AME Church

A Homegoing Celebration will take place Saturday in honor of the Rev. Cecil L. “Chip” Murray at First African Methodist Episcopal Church in Los Angeles, where the late spiritual leader served as pastor for 27 years. The 10 a.m. service will be livestreamed on the church’s YouTube page, www.youtube.com/@FAMECHURCHLA/streams, and CBS News Los Angeles, www.kcalnews.com/live. It will also air live on KCAL9. The church is located at 2270 S. Harvard Blvd. Murray died of natural causes April 5 at his home in the View Park section of Los Angeles at the age of 94, his family said. During his tenure at FAME, the city’s oldest Black church, from 1977 to 2004, Murray helped grow its congregation from 250 to more than 18,000 members and attracted high-profile visitors including former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, along with multiple governors and Los Angeles mayors. He was also noted for his calming presence during the 1992 Los Angeles riots. After his death was announced, Mayor Karen Bass called Murray “a giant” who had “dedicated his life to service, community, and putting God first in all things.

Housing to crypto to wellness: How California fares in 20 national rankings

We live in a ranking age with lists of “best” and “worst” and “in-between” touching every slice of life, industry and geography. Some of these scorecards are based on polling. Others are data-based, trying to decipher government or business stats. And some are simply opinions – individual or consensus. Yes, these rankings can be discussion starters – whether for policy debate or just plain fun. Before the chats get too intense, be aware that the creation of these grades is far more art than statistical science. I’m bemused at the wave of state-vs.-state rankings that flow into my inbox at work. Most of these scorecards are not created to advance societal conversations. Rather, they’re promoted in hopes of generating online attention for a company that likely paid somebody to create “best/worst state” buzz. Not that these state grades themselves aren’t interesting. So, I waded through my inbox to find 20 rankings for California that might intrigue somebody. 20 scorecards No. 1 spending per capita on clothing and footwear, according to shopping stats tracked for QR Code Generator. No. 2 costliest housing gap – average wage

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs files motion to dismiss some claims in sexual assault lawsuit

Joi Dickerson-Deal says Combs “intentionally drugged” her, sexually assaulted her after date in 1991 Saturday, April 27, 2024 2:25PM ABC7 Chicago 24/7 Stream Live streaming newscasts, breaking news, weather & original, local programming. LOS ANGELES — Lawyers for Sean “Diddy” Combs pushed back against a woman’s lawsuit that accused him of sexual assault, filing a motion on Friday to dismiss some claims that were not under law when the alleged incident occurred. The motion filed in a New York court claims Combs cannot be sued because certain laws didn’t exist when Joi Dickerson-Deal made the allegations against him in 1991. The music mogul’s lawyers want certain statues from Dickerson-Deal’s claims such as revenge porn and human trafficking to be dismissed with prejudice. In a filing last year, she said Combs “intentionally drugged” her then brought her home and sexually assaulted her after a date in Harlem when she was a 19-year-old college student. Without her knowledge, Combs videotaped the assault and later shared it with several friends in the music industry, the suit alleges. He denied the allegations, accusing her of seeking to exploit the
