$2 million in federal aid to improve Madera’s storm drainage and sewage system

Saturday, April 27, 2024 9:15PM The City of Madera is getting $2 million in federal aid to improve the city’s critical storm drainage and sewage system. MADERA, Calif. (KFSN) — The City of Madera is getting $2 million in federal aid to improve the city’s critical storm drainage and sewage system. “The City of Madera has been asking for these funds for four years and thank god that today we’re going to get the system in place to get this done because nobody wants to see flooding in our streets or our sewer system to be backed up,” said Mayor Santos Garcia. The city experiences flooding often in the winter and congressman John Duarte, who helped get the funding, saw that firsthand. “Mayor Santos Garcia sent me a photograph in the torrential floods of January 2023 where the sewer line for Madera just blew a hole in it and he was looking for federal help to get that fixed,” Congressman Duarte said. On Friday, that federal help arrived. The city’s Sewer Trunk Main Project received $1 million to improve and replace up to 1.7 miles

Mexico likely to elect 1st woman president: What does that mean for abortion rights?

MEXICO CITY — If a woman wins Mexico’s presidency on June 2, would she rule with gender in mind? The question has been raised by academics, humans rights organizations and activists ahead of the voting that will likely elect Mexico’s first female president for the term 2024-2030. Out of three candidates, the frontrunner is Claudia Sheinbaum, who has promised to keep President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s legacy on track. Next comes Xóchitl Gálvez, representing several opposition parties, one of which is historically conservative. The triumph of Sheinbaum or Gálvez, however, would not guarantee their support for certain gender-related policies. In a country of more than 98 million Catholics, neither of the two leading candidates has shared specific proposals on abortion. Both have suggested equality and protection measures for women amid a wave of violence and femicide. Here’s a look at some of the challenges that Mexico’s next president would face regarding abortion and LGBTQ+ rights. WHAT’S THE CURRENT ABORTION LANDSCAPE? Twelve of Mexico’s 32 states have decriminalized abortion, most of them in the past five years. One more will join them after its legislature complies

Kurtenbach: Grading the 49ers’ Day 3 picks, overall draft

Let’s all take a deep breath and grab a beer. The draft is over — we have ourselves a roster in Santa Clara. Here’s who the Niners took on Day 3 and what I think of the picks. And ultimately, what I think of the team’s 2024 draft: Round 4 No. 124 overall: Malik Mustafa, S, Wake Forest The No. 3 safety on my board, Mustafa is the kind of instinctual playmaker that can change a defense at all three levels. A powerful hitter, Mustafa will be great in the run game. But don’t sleep on his coverage ability — he’s one of the best in this class at turning his hips and covering the deep routes. If someone gets behind him, the play isn’t over. I’ll plant my flag: Mustafa will challenge for the starting strong safety spot in Week 1. A’s allow three homers, are stymied by ex-teammate in loss to Baltimore

BALTIMORE — Oakland A’s manager Mark Kotsay has already seen these impressive performances from left-handed starter Cole Irvin. Irvin, who won a combined 19 games in 2021 and 2022 with Oakland, was at his best again Saturday. He allowed just four hits over seven scoreless innings to lead the Baltimore Orioles to a 7-0 win over the A’s to even the three-game series. “His location was great today,” Kotsay said of Irvin, who, with pitching prospect Kyle Virbitsky, was traded to the Orioles in Jan. 2023 for infielder Darell Hernaiz. “The front door two-seamer was locking the righties up a lot. He was jamming guys with his cutter. “He had a good mix. Pitched great. Sometimes you’ve got to tip your cap.” Meanwhile, A’s starter JP Sears gave up home runs to Adley Rutschman and Ryan Mountcastle on successive pitches in the fifth inning. Gunnar Henderson also went deep for the AL East-leading Orioles, who emphatically bounced back from a 3-2, 10-inning loss to Oakland in the series opener Friday night. Baltimore has now gone 100 straight regular-season series of at least two games without

Cal Poly Humboldt closes campus for rest of semester over Gaza protests

Cal Poly Humboldt officials are closing the campus for the remainder of the semester with classwork continuing remotely, as pro-Palestinian student activists refuse to end their occupation of two academic buildings. This closure means that anyone on campus without authorization by University Police is subject to citation or arrest, the university wrote in a statement Saturday. Students living on campus are being asked to limit their movement to between their residence hall and dorms, and they cannot be on other parts of campus “until further updates.” The far Northern California campus had already been shut down since Monday, when dozens of students set up an encampment inside Siemens Hall, an academic and administrative building, at the Arcata school in an act of “solidarity with those facing genocide in Gaza,” organizers said. They demanded that the university divest from Israeli companies and weapons manufacturers. University administrators called in riot police to clear the encampment, resulting in a clash with protesters and three arrests. “Those who are staying in there are not staying in there for noble causes. They’re criminals,” University President Tom Jackson told the Eureka

Stanford football: Why Cardinal are looking forward to new ACC affiliation

STANFORD – When Stanford opened last season at Hawai’i, traveling a day earlier than usual to adjust to the time change and the long flight, little did it know that it would be good preparation for the years to follow. Starting this season, Stanford will replace annual trips to the Pacific Northwest and Southern California with cross-country flights as it begins a new era in the ACC. The Cardinal will play four games in the Eastern time zone in 2024, including visits to Syracuse, Clemson and N.C. State and a previously scheduled game at Notre Dame. “It’s going to be fun,” junior cornerback Colin Wright said. “I know a lot of people have mentioned the travel implications, but I think all those things will work themselves out. Playing against schools that we’ve all admired growing up like the Clemsons and Miamis will be interesting. “A kid like me from Texas has never been to the East Coast, so it will be an interesting opportunity to see those places.” While almost everyone would prefer the old arrangement of the Pac-12 and its longstanding regional rivalries, the

Clippers’ Kawhi Leonard questionable for Game 4 vs. Mavericks

DALLAS —  Kawhi Leonard eased his way onto the American Airlines Center court Saturday afternoon, his sneakers in hand and a thin white device on his swollen right knee that has left the Clippers’ best player listed as questionable for Game 4 on Sunday. Lawrence Frank, the Clippers’ president of basketball operations, made his way over and sat next to Leonard for a chat. Leonard bent over to tie his shoes, got up and walked over for a short talk with Clippers coach Tyronn Lue. Leonard then grabbed a basketball and began to take shots, his movements deliberate and measured, but at least he was practicing. The Clippers trail the Dallas Mavericks 2-1 in the best-of-seven Western Conference first-round playoff series and Leonard said after Game 3 on Friday that he wants to play because he wants to be there for his teammates. “He’s just still dealing with the inflammation and the swelling,” Lue said. “So, we’re monitoring it. He got treatment last night, got treatment this morning, he’ll get treatment tonight, so we’ll just see. Right now he’s questionable for Game 4.” Like he has

Tyler Glasnow dominates before making quick exit in Dodgers’ sixth straight win

TORONTO —  For the first time in his debut Dodgers season, there seemed to be a brief injury scare for starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow on Saturday. After six stellar, suffocating, scoreless innings in a 4-2 Dodgers win over the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre, Glasnow returned to the mound in the seventh inning hoping to put the finishing touches on a second consecutive shutout performance. Instead, he gave up a run, started flexing his throwing hand, and then left the game alongside a trainer. For a moment, it looked like a troubling sign for a veteran pitcher with a long list of past arm injuries. But minutes after Glasnow left the mound, the team announced he was dealing only with cramping. Any serious setback had seemingly been averted, and the good vibes that have surrounded the Dodgers (18-11) lately could continue. “[There is] not any level of concern,” manager Dave Roberts said of Glasnow’s cramping, which the pitcher felt in both his right hand and right calf. “He’ll be fine.” More than that, Roberts noted, his performance had been “fantastic.” “When you acquire a guy
