Here are the ultraprocessed foods you most need to avoid, according to a 30-year study

By Madeline Holcombe | CNN Eating ultraprocessed foods is associated with an early risk of death, according to a 30-year study — but different foods have different impacts. Ultraprocessed foods are those that contain ingredients “never or rarely used in kitchens, or classes of additives whose function is to make the final product palatable or more appealing,” according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Those ingredients — found in things such as sodas, chips, packaged soups, nuggets and ice cream — can include preservatives against mold or bacteria, artificial coloring, emulsifiers to stop separation, and added or altered sugar, salt and fats to make food more appealing. Processed meats and sugary foods and drinks aren’t correlated with the same risks as ultraprocessed whole grains, for example, said lead study author Dr. Mingyang Song, associate professor of clinical epidemiology and nutrition at Harvard’s TH Chan School of Public Health. The study analyzed data from more than 100,000 health professionals in the United States with no history of cancer, cardiovascular disease or diabetes. From 1986 to 2018, the participants provided information on their health

Larry Magid: For kids, summertime doesn’t have to mean more screen time

Summertime is almost here, which means that kids will soon be out of school, perhaps with plenty of time on their hands. That’s great, but it also means that they’ll have more time to interact with their devices. For some kids, this can be problematic. Although I don’t discount the potential damage from overuse of technology, I’m not a believer in applying the term “addiction.”  I agree with pediatrician and Boston Children’s Digital Wellness Lab director, Dr. Michael Rich, author of The Mediatrician’s Guide: A Joyful Approach to Raising Healthy, Smart, Kind Kids in a Screen-Saturated World who wrote, “The label of addiction isn’t helpful when it skews our response and fails to provide the young person with the means of righting a pattern of media use that has gone awry.  On ConnectSafely’s “Are We Doing Tech Right?” podcast, he said “The way you take care of addiction is abstinence. With the Internet, we can’t abstain. We need this. This is a necessary resource to life in the 21st century.”  A better term is “problematic media use behaviors” that, wrote Rich, “are immersive due to

Man fired repeatedly as victim lay on the ground begging for help, then buried him in a shallow grave, East Bay police say

A man suspected of committing a homicide at a homeless encampment where both the suspect and victim lived has been charged with murder and threatening an eyewitness from coming forward, court records show. Andres Sanchez, 38, allegedly shot Miguel Estrada once during an argument, then stood over him and fired at least five more times as Estrada begged for help. About a day later, Sanchez dug a hole near Estrada’s tent and buried his body, according to police. The killing took place at an encampment at Hayman and San Antonio streets in Hayward, police said. Police were not notified of the April 26 homicide for two days, because Sanchez threatened a person who witnessed it and they were scared to come forward, authorities said. Police haven’t revealed the nature of his argument with Estrada. After learning of the incident, authorities went to the encampment and dug up Estrada’s body. Sanchez was arrested April 30, after leading police on a short chase in his ATV, then running into an occupied home and barricading himself inside. Officers were able to get the residents out safely, but it

Review: ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ monkeys with a durable sci-fi concept, to smart ends

Since Charlton Heston first gazed upon the remnants of the Statue of Liberty on a sandy beach 56 years ago, the “Planet of the Apes” movies have remained popular. Their appeal is the opportunity to explore complex characters and social issues within the franchise’s allegorical representation of our world. They’re not escapism, but reflection. The best “Apes” movies offer insight into ourselves and the world that we’ve created, and so does the latest installment, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” the 10th in the series, which manages to encompass everything we love about these movies into one sprawling story. After the franchise ran its course in the 1970s and with the 2001 Tim Burton one-off, screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver nailed a reboot in 2011 with “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.” Directed by Rupert Wyatt, the film featured the story of Caesar, an intelligent ape who leads an uprising, a callback to the 1972 installment “The Conquest of the Planet of the Apes.” Embodied by Andy Serkis in a truly remarkable motion-capture performance and created digitally by the artists at the

Health officials warn Californians of risks of fake Botox. Here’s what to look for

Fake versions of Botox have popped up in California, raising alarm among public health officials who warn that counterfeit versions of the injections can lead to symptoms such as slurred speech and breathing problems. “Counterfeit or incorrectly administered Botox, even in small amounts, can result in serious health problems and even death,” Dr. Tomás J. Aragón, director of the California Department of Public Health, warned in a statement Wednesday. Botox, or botulinum toxin, is used cosmetically to temporarily smooth fine lines on the face. It has also been employed to treat medical conditions such as muscle spasms. The product is derived from a toxin produced by bacteria. Last month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that 22 people from 11 states had reported harmful reactions such as weakness and blurry vision after getting injections, landing some of them in the hospital. They had gotten their injections from unlicensed or untrained people or outside of healthcare settings, such as in a home or spa, according to the federal agency. So far, there is no indication that such problems were linked to the genuine Botox

Supreme Court rules innocent owners of seized cars are not entitled to immediate hearing

WASHINGTON —  The Supreme Court refused on Thursday to give innocent owners of seized cars a right to an immediate hearing to reclaim their vehicles. Instead, the justices in a 6-3 decision said the Constitution requires a “timely hearing” to consider whether the police had properly arrested the driver and seized the vehicle, but that may take weeks or months. In the interim, the innocent owner may be without their car. The court considered appeals from two women whose cars were seized by Alabama police who had arrested the drivers on drug charges. Halima Culley had lent her car to her college-age son. Lena Sutton lent her car to a friend. Within two weeks, the police filed a notice to the two women that their cars may be forfeited, and they did not respond. Later, they joined a class-action lawsuit seeking damages for the state’s failure to give them a speedy hearing and to return their vehicles. Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh, speaking for the court, said states have adopted different rules for handling forfeitures, and the justices were wary of requiring a second, preliminary hearing in

Fire Tears Through RV Dealership; 15 to 20 RVs Destroyed

A spectacular blaze destroyed at least 15 to 20 RVs at a dealership in Santa Fe Springs early Thursday, and a suspect seen on security video on the property at the time the fire began was being sought, police said. The fire was reported about 12:20 a.m. at Mike Thompson’s RV Super Store, 13940 Firestone Blvd., according to the Whittier Police Department, which provides law enforcement services in that area of Santa Fe Springs. Officers sent to the address on an alarm call saw smoke from the southwest corner of the property near railroad tracks and notified firefighters, police said. Santa Fe Springs Fire Department crews were called to the dealership to battle the raging fire, which was contained to one part of the large property. The flames destroyed 15 to 20 RVs, each worth about $100,000, police said. Security video showed a “suspect” described as a male walking between the RVs at the time the fire started, and authorities searched the area but did not find him, police said. The cause of the fire was under investigation by police detectives and fire department arson

Judge Mulls Fate of Hollywood Creative Alliance Defamation Suit

A judge has indicated he is inclined to dismiss a defamation lawsuit brought by the Hollywood Creative Alliance against the Broadcast Film Critics Association on free-speech grounds, but says he wants to mull the issues further before making a final ruling. Prior to the Van Nuys Superior Court suit’s Jan. 29 filing, the association announced that HCA members would no longer be allowed to be association members and that those who were members of both groups would need to prove they had left the HCA if they wanted to keep their association membership. The association’s actions caused dozens of HCA members to resign after they made “heartfelt” apologies to HCA leadership, the suit states. In a tentative ruling issued Wednesday during a hearing on the association’s anti-SLAPP motion, Judge Eric Harmon said the HCA “has not shown any evidence that it can prevail on any of its causes of action,” but he took the case under submission. In a sworn statement opposing the anti-SLAPP motion, the HCA’s Scott Menzel says the association’s actions have had a substantial impact on the plaintiff’s organization. “The departures have

Lake told “Good Morning America” she made a decision to take a bet on herself, and in the process, discovered a newfound happiness. “I feel the best I can remember feeling in my life,” Lake told ABC News’ Kayna Whitworth. I have this new marriage and I’m so blissfully happy with this amazing man, my perfect man. And if I pinpoint one thing that was not working in our lives, is that we were carrying this extra weight.” Throughout her longtime career, Lake has been an open book about her weight challenges and health struggles. But in the last seven months, she said she and her husband teamed up to lose weight and began to share their joint journey on Instagram. “It’s been a commitment. Harvey Weinstein won’t be sent back to California while he awaits New York rape retrial

By PHILIP MARCELO Thursday, May 9, 2024 4:18PM Weinstein is due back in court as California wants him extradited. NEW YORK — Harvey Weinstein will remain locked up in New York as a court works out whether he should stay in a city jail while he awaits a retrial in a rape case, or be sent back to California to continue serving a prison sentence. The fallen movie mogul denied his consent for an extradition request from California related to a separate rape conviction during a brief court hearing Thursday. Weinstein will continue to be held in New York as the extradition process plays out. Weinstein, released from a city hospital days ago, showed up for the hearing in a wheelchair and wearing a dark suit. Defense attorney Diana Fabi Samson said later outside of court that their main concern was making sure Weinstein gets needed medical care while he remains in custody in New York. “He’s holding up the best he can,” she said. Samson described the court appearance Thursday as normal procedure and said California first needs to produce a warrant signed by

Stormy Daniels spars with Trump defense attorney in hush money trial | LIVE

Donald Trump’s defense attorneys grilled Stormy Daniels Thursday on the transaction at the center of the former president’s hush money trial, pressing her on why she accepted a $130,000 payment to keep quiet about her alleged sexual encounter with Trump instead of going public. “Why didn’t you do that?” attorney Susan Necheles asked, wondering why Daniels didn’t hold a news conference as she had planned to tell reporters about the 2006 encounter, which Trump denies ever happened. “Because we were running out of time,” Daniels said. Stormy Daniels will return to the witness stand Thursday as the defense tries to undermine the credibility of the porn actor’s salacious testimony. Did she mean, Necheles asked, that she was running out of time to use the claim to make money? “To get the story out,” Daniels countered. The negotiations happened in the final weeks of the 2016 presidential campaign, a critical point in the case against Trump because prosecutors are arguing that he and his allies snatched up these potentially damaging stories and buried them in an illegal effort to influence the November results. Trump denies any

How to turn a supermarket bouquet into a lusher, more personalized flower arrangement

If your heart is telling you to give someone a luxurious bouquet of flowers, but your wallet is telling you to shop at the supermarket, fear not: With a bit of imagination and creativity, you can transform a simple, low-cost bouquet into a stunning floral arrangement. Jennifer Murphy, owner of Forget Me Knots Custom Events and Floral Design in Floral Park, New York, recommends choosing fragrant flowers like roses and lilies, “classic choices that will fill the room with their sweet aroma and make your bouquet even more memorable.” When you bring your flowers home, trim their stems at an angle, remove leaves below the waterline and place flowers in a vase to hydrate, Murphy says. These steps give the flowers “some room to breathe” and improve their longevity. Next, she said, rearrange the bouquet by placing “the tallest stems at the back and working forward, layering in shorter blooms (toward the front) for a balanced look.” Proper preparation and the addition of greenery and “filler” flowers can transform a simple bouquet into a lovely arrangement. Visitors warned to avoid toxic algal bloom at San Bernardino County lake

Swimmers and boaters at a popular San Bernardino County lake were told to stay away from a toxic algal bloom discovered in the water. California’s Department of Water Resources (DWR) announced the algal bloom advisory for Silverwood Lake in a post on X, formerly Twitter, on May 3. “Always keep yourself and pets away from algal blooms,” the DWR stated in the post, which directed users to its website for further information. Boats and canopies are seen at Silverwood Lake in San Bernardino County. (CA Department of Water Resources via X) Blue-green algae blooms are a natural part of the ecosystem but can produce toxins. “While some algae are harmless, certain types can produce toxins that can make people and animals sick,” the DWR stated. Advisories are issued once tests are positive that a harmful algal bloom is present and will not be reduced until lab results show declining toxin levels below the level of concern for two weeks. More than a dozen RVs burn in fire at popular Southern California dealership The DWR says there is no way to tell for sure if an

Neuralink brain-chip implant encounters issues in human patient

By Kate Gibson Edited By Aimee Picchi May 9, 2024 / 12:08 PM EDT / CBS News “Neuralink” looks to implant chips into the brain Elon Musk’s “Neuralink” looks to implant chips into the human brain 05:46 Neuralink’s brain-computer interface device has encountered issues since it was implanted in its first human subject, according to the company owned by Elon Musk. Some of the device’s electrode-studded threads started retracting from the brain tissue of quadriplegic Noland Arbaugh about a month after it was surgically implanted in late January , causing it to transmit less data, Neuralink wrote in a blog post on Wednesday.  The Wall Street Journal first reported on the malfunction that caused a reduction in bits-per-second, a measure of the speed and accuracy of the patient’s ability to control a computer cursor by thinking.  Neuralink made up for the malfunction with multiple software fixes, resulting in a “rapid and sustained improvement in BPS, that has now superseded Noland’s initial performance,” the company said. The company is now focused on improving text entry for the device and cursor control, which it hopes in the

Can I wipe my credit card debt without paying?

By Angelica Leicht Edited By Matt Richardson May 9, 2024 / 12:06 PM EDT / CBS News There are a couple of ways to wipe out your credit card debt without paying, but there may be better options to consider instead. Getty Images Many Americans are feeling the financial squeeze from multiple directions right now. For starters, stubbornly high inflation , which is currently running at around 3.5%, has driven up the cost of essentials like food, housing and energy. And, the Federal Reserve has been keeping its benchmark rate at a 23-year high in an effort to get inflation under control, which is causing consumer borrowing rates to be elevated, too. This high-rate environment has, in turn, made borrowing more expensive for things like mortgages , auto loans and credit cards . For households that are already struggling to make ends meet, this combination of high inflation and elevated interest rates can have a severe impact . When the bills keep piling up but

Rainn Wilson’s new podcast shines light on spirituality

By Kelsie Hoffman May 9, 2024 / 11:58 AM EDT / CBS News Rainn Wilson on hosting podcast “Soul Boom” Rainn Wilson talks hosting new podcast “Soul Boom” 05:58 Rainn Wilson, best known for his role as Dwight Schrute on “The Office,” is using his personal experiences to highlight spirituality, saying we all need a “soul revolution.” “I went through a lot of mental health crises when I was younger, and I found that turning to spiritual tools to help me on my path were incredibly valuable,” Wilson said on “CBS Mornings.” His new podcast, called “Soul Bloom,” is based on his New York Times bestselling book of the same name. On it, he talks with experts, comedians and authors about creativity, spirituality and psychology. “That’s the big question: ‘Why is this weird sitcom actor writing about spirituality and the soul and death and the meaning of life?'” Wilson joked. “It really was because I was on death’s door.”  Wilson further explained he asked himself, “why am I even here?” and “why should I be here?” “Sometimes, when you’re at that point, the greatest and

TikTok to start labeling AI-generated content as technology becomes more universal

By MICHELLE CHAPMAN (AP Business Writer) TikTok will begin labeling content created using artificial intelligence when it’s uploaded from outside its own platform. TikTok says its efforts are an attempt to combat misinformation from being spread on its social media platform. “AI enables incredible creative opportunities, but can confuse or mislead viewers if they don’t know content was AI-generated,” the company said in a prepared statement Thursday. “Labeling helps make that context clear—which is why we label AIGC made with TikTok AI effects, and have required creators to label realistic AIGC for over a year.” The move is part of an overall effort by those in the technology industry to provide more safeguards for AI usage. In February Meta announced that it was working with industry partners on technical standards that will make it easier to identify images and eventually video and audio generated by artificial intelligence tools. The efforts would include Facebook and Instagram users seeing labels on AI-generated images that appear on their social media feeds. Google said last year that AI labels are coming to YouTube and its other platforms. A push
