Seize the Day earns wire-to-wire Preakness Stakes win on muddy track

BALTIMORE —  The 149th running of the Preakness Stakes was one for the ages. And the winning age was 88. In an outcome few saw coming, Wayne Lukas won his seventh Preakness on Saturday when Seize the Grey broke in front and never surrendered the lead over 1 3/16 miles. Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan did not disappoint with a solid runner-up finish, but it ended any chance of a Triple Crown. Lukas walks with a cane but still gets up on his pony every morning and supervises the training of his horses. All of the other trainers made a point to congratulate him after the race. Lukas, who is known as “The Coach” because he was a high school basketball coach, was touched by the display of affection. “One of the things that was very significant to me [Saturday] — and maybe it’s because I’m getting a little bit older — but as I came out of the grandstand and out across the racetrack, every one of the guys that were in that race stopped and hugged me and gave me a handshake. “That meant

Luis Matos enters exclusive company as SF Giants finally win 3 in a row

SAN FRANCISCO — When Luis Matos debuted as the second-youngest player in the majors last June, “Matos Mania” was born. The Venezuelan outfield phenom collected hits and scored runs at a rate that put him in the same conversation as Willie McCovey in franchise lore. Matos, now, is almost a year older. He boasts somewhere in the range of 20 pounds of extra muscle. It’s time for Matos 2.0. With another six RBIs in the Giants’ 14-4 win over the Rockies on Saturday, Matos surpassed even more exclusive company. This time around, the inner-circle Hall of Famer with whom the Giants’ young outfielder is keeping company is Orlando Cepeda, who held the franchise record for the most runs driven in over a two-game stretch at 22 years old or younger with nine between June 3 and 4, 1959. Matos had already matched Cepeda when he stepped to the plate in the eighth inning, then added two more RBIs to his ledger with his third hit of the afternoon. He has 11 RBIs in his past two games, matching Jack Clark (1982) and Bill Terry (1932)

2 men from L.A., 2 from Las Vegas arrested for allegedly selling fentanyl, cocaine, on dark web

The United States Department of Justice announced four men have been arrested for selling fentanyl pills and cocaine on the dark web. Authorities say Southern California natives, 21-year-old Alejandro Soto, and 21-year-old Austin Blanco, both from Burbank, and Las Vegas residents, 23-year-old Craig Rushton, and 20-year-old Christian McKibben have all been charged with one count of conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and cocaine, two counts of distribution of fentanyl, and one count of distribution of cocaine. The investigation began in April of 2021. The DOJ says the four men conspired with 23-year-old Van Nuys native Brian McDonald, and 23-year-old Ciara Clutario, of Burbank, to traffic fentanyl and cocaine. McDonald and Clutario allegedly created vendor profiles on darknet marketplaces to sell fentanyl, cocaine, and other illegal narcotics in exchange for cryptocurrency. The pair maintained online dark web profiles and arranged drug listings and shipment options, tracking drug orders received through the profiles, and offloading cryptocurrency received on the darknet marketplaces into cryptocurrency wallets that the co-conspirators controlled. Both McDonald and Clutario were charged last year, their trials will begin on Aug. 6. The DOJ says Soto, Blacano

Seize the Grey wins 149th Preakness, ends Mystik Dan’s Triple Crown bid

(AP) — Seize the Grey went wire to wire to win the Preakness Stakes on Saturday, giving 88-year-old Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas a seventh victory in the race and ending Mystik Dan’s Triple Crown bid. The gray colt took advantage of the muddy track just like Lukas hoped he would, pulling off the upset in a second consecutive impressive start two weeks after romping in a race on the Derby undercard at Churchill Downs. Seize the Grey went off at 9-1, one of the longest shots on the board. Mystik Dan finished second in the field of eight horses running in the $2 million, 1 3/16-mile race. After falling short of going back to back following his win by a nose in the Kentucky Derby, it would be a surprise if he runs in the Belmont Stakes on June 8 at Saratoga Race Course. Seize the Grey was a surprise Preakness winner facing tougher competition than in the Pat Day Mile on May 4. Though given the Lukas connection, it should never be a surprise when one of his horses is covered

VIDEO: Boat radiates neon blue in waters near Scripps Pier

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — From glowing sand, seemingly electrified surfing and illuminated waves crashing along the San Diego shoreline, bioluminescence has been vividly present in recent weeks. This is especially true in the area of the Scripps Pier in La Jolla. On Thursday, UC San Diego photographer Erik Jepsen, once again, captured the phenomenon that continues to dazzle so many. This time, however, the cameraman worked his magic not on shore, but out at sea. Images and video were captured from both the sky and aboard a small boat that launched off the Scripps Pier Thursday evening, offering new perspectives of the prominent bioluminescence. The boat radiated neon blue, with a streaming trail so bright that it lit up the dark waters as night set in. A striking display of bioluminescence was captured off Scripps Pier the evening of May 16, 2024. Bioluminescent red tides off San Diego are typically formed due to aggregations of the dinoflagellate Lingulodinium polyedra, a species well known for its displays of light. At night, when the phytoplankton are agitated by waves or other movement in the water, they emit a dazzling neon

Westmont ace wins classic pitcher’s duel in extra-inning CCS Division II baseball thriller

CAMPBELL – Most of the Westmont team was still congratulating Lakin Anderson for driving the game-winning ninth inning single into center field and pushing the Warriors into the Central Coast Section Division II semifinals when Mason Pound went over to Los Altos pitcher Eric Colgrove. After the two threw for a combined 17 ⅔ innings and hurled 187 pitches in a classic duel, the winning pitcher would not leave the field without expressing his profound respect for his adversary, who had collapsed in despair after the final out.  “I wanted to tell him that he pitched a great game,” Pound said. “He was one of the best pitchers we’ve faced all year. ” Pound struck out eight on 94 pitches and Colgrove allowed just six hits in 8 ⅔ innings. Both kept batters from keying in on their pinpoint fastballs by mixing in a diverse array of sliders, sinkers and curveballs. “The sinker worked well today,” Colgrove said. “I didn’t get a lot of strikeouts, but I kept them in check with that sinker.” CAMPBELL – Los Altos pitcher Eric Colgrove throws a pitch against

The stuff that Coppola’s dreams are made of: The director on building ‘Megalopolis’

By Jake Coyle | Associated Press CANNES, France — Of the many quotations and slogans that flitter through Francis Ford Coppola’s idea-stuffed, open-hearted, unabashedly optimistic “Megalopolis,” one that particularly resonates with the director is: “When we leap into the unknown, we prove that we’re free.” “That’s me making this film,” Coppola says, speaking on a hotel terrace in Cannes the day after “Megalopolis” premiered at the French festival. “To all of the studio big shots, I proved that I’m free and they’re not. Because they don’t dare leap into the unknown. And I do. That’s the only way to prove that you’re free.” Coppola pauses and then adds, with a grin. “I don’t recommend it.” “Megalopolis,” Coppola’s first film in 13 years, has been called many things since it was unveiled in Cannes. A folly. A disaster. An audacious, self-financed gamble. What it is, regardless of whether all its strange parts function smoothly together, is a colossal personal statement by one of America’s most visionary filmmakers, about having the daring to be visionary. It’s no small step but another giant leap by Coppola, 85, who

Former South Africa leader Zuma promises jobs and free education as he launches party manifesto

By Mogomotsi Magome | Associated Press JOHANNESBURG — Former South African President Jacob Zuma on Saturday lamented the high levels of poverty among black South Africans and promised to create jobs and tackle crime as he launched his new political party’s manifesto ahead of the country’s much-anticipated elections. He told thousands of supporters who gathered at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg that his party would build factories where many people would be employed and provide free education to the country’s youth. “We want our children to study for free, especially those from poor households because the poverty we have was not created by us. It was created by settlers who took everything, including our land. We’ll take all those things back, make money and educate our children,” he said. He has also pledged to change the country’s Constitution to restore more powers to traditional leaders, saying their role in society has been reduced by giving more powers to magistrates and judges. Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe party, known as the MK Party, has emerged as a significant player in South Africa’s upcoming elections after it was launched in

S.F. public hospital and community clinic RNs authorize strike

Bay City News San Francisco Department of Public Health registered nurses voted last week to authorize their contract negotiations team to call a strike, passing the measure with 99.5% approval. Votes were counted on Friday after nurses voted at SF General Hospital, Laguna Honda Hospital and various clinics throughout the week. The bargaining team is still negotiating with the city to address staffing shortages and working conditions, but the authorization will allow them to call a stroke after their contract expires on June 30 if they feel the city has continued “refusing to engage seriously and in good faith on the nurses’ priorities to protect and improve patient care,” according to the press release from the union. The union claims that the San Francisco Department of Public Health used per-diem temporary part-time nurses to do the equivalent number of hours of 291 full-time RNs. The union says it presented evidence of 16,000 missed breaks and over 1,400 “assignment despite objection” forms outlining unsafe conditions. “Since negotiations began in February, the City has ignored its employees working on the frontlines of the City’s toughest public health

‘Freak of nature’: Inside Shohei Ohtani’s career-best start to his first Dodgers season

On the first day of spring training, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts began drawing a lofty parallel. Barry Bonds, Roberts said, “was the most talented player I’ve ever played with.” Shohei Ohtani, he then predicted, “probably has a chance to be the most talented player to ever play the game of baseball.” During a trip to San Francisco last week, Roberts witnessed the comparison in real life. Back in the ballpark Bonds once called home, a stadium where Roberts has seen hundreds of games as a player and manager, the Dodgers’ skipper turned his gaze skyward after a thunderous Ohtani swing. His slugger had just clubbed a home run 446 feet with a blistering 113.4-mph exit velocity. Roberts’ mind, however, could think only one thing. “That’s Barry territory,” he said of a home run that cleared the towering right-center field bleachers at Oracle Park, landing just short of a splash down in McCovey Cove. “There aren’t too many guys that can do that.” Then again, there aren’t too many players capable of having the kind of season Ohtani is having nearly 50 games in, a performance

Hollywood Remembers Dabney Coleman After Actor’s Death at 92

Dabney Coleman was being remembered fondly this weekend by fans and colleagues after the prolific actor’s death at the age of 92. “The great Dabney Coleman literally created, or defined, really — in a uniquely singular way — an archetype as a character actor,” Ben Stiller wrote on X. “He was so good at what he did it’s hard to imagine movies and television of the last 40 years without him.” “I’ve gone to Dan Tana’s restaurant regularly all my adult life. Dabney Coleman was always there, sitting in booth number one (appropriately), having his trademark steak,” actor James Woods wrote. “I had always loved him as an actor, and loved him more as we became friends. ##RIPDabneyColeman.” “We lost one of the GREATS,” actor Jon Donahue wrote. “His credits include some of my favorites: “On Golden Pond”, “9 to 5”, “Tootsie”, “WarGames”, & “Cloak & Dagger”. When Dabney Coleman was on screen, you couldn’t take your eyes off of him. He stole the show. RIP & Thank You for your gifts to Cinema.” “Dabney Coleman quietly carried some of the best movies of the
