SAN LEANDRO – An emergency services dispatcher was hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver while on her way to work Sunday night in San Leandro, according to authorities. The two-vehicle collision happened around 11:15 p.m. at the intersection of East 14th Street and 150th Avenue, the San Leandro Police Department said in a news release. The victim was taken to an area hospital, where she died of her injuries. She was identified as Antoinette Finau, an emergency services dispatcher with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office. Finau was on her way to work when the crash happened, according to police. An investigation revealed her car was broadsided and rolled over as she went through the intersection. The driver of the second vehicle was not injured in the crash. Police said she was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. “The San Leandro Police Department offers our condolences to the family of the victim as well as the men and women of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office,” said Lt. Jeffrey Walton. “This is a tragic loss of life and a painful reminder of the

A’s bullpen can’t hold on as late Seager home run lifts Rangers

By ERIC HE | Associated Press OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Corey Seager hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning and the Texas Rangers rallied past the Oakland Athletics 4-2 on Monday night. The defending World Series champions were trailing 2-0 until Seager drilled a full-count pitch from Lucas Erceg (1-2) over the right-center wall with two outs. Texas added an insurance run in the ninth on an error by first baseman Tyler Nevin. Kirby Yates got three outs for his sixth save. The A’s, who are leaving Oakland at the end of this season for Sacramento while they await a new stadium in Las Vegas, drew a season-low 2,895 fans at the Coliseum. Texas has won four of five, and tied a season high with its three-game win streak. The A’s have dropped two in a row after winning six straight. Woman Suspected of Assaulting Bus Driver in South Los Angeles Arrested

A 27-year-old woman suspected of assaulting an L.A. Dash bus operator, along with a passenger and a law enforcement officer in South Los Angeles, was in custody, police said Monday. Officers responded to the 3400 block of South Central Avenue, near Jefferson Boulevard, around 12:55 p.m. Sunday regarding a battered bus operator and passenger, according to Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Officer Drake Madison. Video footage shows the woman attacking the bus operator as the driver attempted to fight back to defend herself from the attacker. According to KTLA, reports from the scene obtained by the video news service Onscene.TV presumed the woman had assaulted the driver after the operator refused to accept her money for the ride due to Dash buses being free of charge. Theresa Avina was eventually taken into custody, but not before she allegedly assaulted an officer with a deadly weapon, Madison said. It was unclear precisely what weapon allegedly was used to assault the officer. Avina was initially booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and remained in custody with a bail set at

Southern California women being vigilant following recent random attacks

In light of recent assaults in Southern California, women across the Southland are learning how to better protect themselves against random acts of violence. There have been several high-profile attacks on women in the past weeks, including the vicious assaults of two females who were walking near the Venice Canals. The acts of violence have prompted several SoCal women to take up self-defense lessons and remain vigilant when they’re in public. One woman, identified only as Melissa, was attacked by a stranger who lives in her own neighborhood in October of last year. She says the incident motivated her to learn how to protect herself. “She kicked my dog in the face, and then she started hitting me with open fists,” Melissa said to KTLA 5’s Jennifer McGraw. “Completely caught me off guard. I have to be concerned about my own safety.” Dave Kerr teaches self-defense classes at his gym, FitSport Kinetics in Pasadena. He preaches to his students to always remain vigilant when walking alone, and learn the basics of how to react if they’re ever the victim of a random attack. “You don’t

Israel seizes Gaza side of Rafah border crossing with Eqypt

Updated on: May 7, 2024 / 6:16 AM EDT / CBS/AP Hamas, Israel at odds over cease-fire proposal Hamas accepts Gaza cease-fire proposal, but Israel calls deal unacceptable 02:31 Jerusalem — An Israeli tank brigade took control Tuesday of the Gaza Strip side of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, authorities said, appearing to move forward with an offensive in the southern city even as cease-fire negotiations with Hamas remain on a knife’s edge. The move came after hours of whiplash in the Israel-Hamas war , with the militant group saying Monday that it had accepted an Egyptian-Qatari mediated cease-fire proposal. Israel, however, insisted the deal didn’t meet its core demands and rejected it, though it has said it will continue discussing the proposal.  The high-stakes diplomatic moves and military brinkmanship left a glimmer of hope alive — but only barely — for an accord that could bring at least a pause in the 7-month-old war that has devastated the Gaza Strip. Israel takes “operational control” of Rafah crossing   The Israeli 401st Brigade entered the Rafah crossing early Tuesday morning, the Israeli military said

Homeowners say L.A. too lenient on crime after safe stolen during home break-in

Homeowners in Playa Del Rey are frustrated and upset after thieves broke into their residence and stole numerous personal items, including a safe containing tens of thousands of dollars worth of cash, jewelry, and family heirlooms. The couple says the break-in happened around 9:30 p.m. on May 3, while they were away for the evening. The victims say they don’t feel safe in their own homes after multiple break-ins have occurred recently in the neighborhood. Ala Tabatabai and Mytien Goldberg live in the home with their children and say local government officials aren’t doing enough to protect the public. “We feel very violated,” Goldberg said. “We don’t feel safe in our own home anymore.” There were at least four suspects caught on the family’s security camera. The couple says the burglars gained entry to the rear of the home through the second-floor bedroom window. Video obtained by KTLA shows the thieves leaving out of the front door, as one of the suspects tries to rip the Ringera camera off the wall. The suspects managed to steal a safe that was bolted to the floor. “My

L.A. police, possibly FBI to help investigate violent siege on UCLA encampment

Nearly a week after violence erupted on the campus of UCLA, Chancellor Gene Block announced Monday that the school is working with the Los Angeles Police Department and has reached out to the Federal Bureau of Investigation to hold those responsible for the melee accountable.   Hostilities outside the pro-Palestinian solidarity encampment had been simmering since demonstrators took over Royce Quad on April 25, setting up dozens of tents and surrounding themselves with metal fences and wood pallets.   On April 30, just hours after Chancellor Block labeled the encampment as “unauthorized,” pro-Israeli counter-protestors, many dressed in all black with white masks over their faces and flags draped across their shoulders, lobbed fireworks at the encampment and attempted to dismantle the barricades.   For at least two hours, campus police stood by as both factions traded punches, hurled items at each other, and dispersed pepper spray and fire extinguishers in a chaotic scene that wasn’t contained until around 2 a.m. when LAPD officers arrived.  The president of the University of California system, Michael Drake, said 15 people were injured, one of whom required hospitalization.  Despite

Walker Buehler shows some rust but overcomes it in his Dodgers return

It took all of seven pitches for Dodgers right-hander Walker Buehler to exceed the expectations of manager Dave Roberts, who prefaced Buehler’s first major league start in 23 months Monday night by saying, “I don’t expect to see the 96-97 mph that he had before [Tommy John] surgery.” After completing his warmup pitches with Rage Against the Machine’s “Bulls on Parade” blaring on the Dodger Stadium public-address system, Buehler went into his windup with the signature high leg-kick and fired his first pitch, a 96-mph fastball, by Miami leadoff hitter Jazz Chisholm Jr. for strike one. Buehler hit 97 mph with his seventh pitch of the game, a fastball that Chisholm fouled off, and just for good measure, Buehler touched 97.6 mph with his eighth pitch, which was also fouled off by Chisholm. “It made sense with how amped up I was and how fast my heart was going,” said Buehler, whose fastball sat at 93-94 mph in six minor league rehabilitation starts. “You think about 22 months and now [two elbow] surgeries … the first fastball was 96, I looked up and said, ‘OK.’

Cupertino: Girl dies of injuries suffered in suspected DUI crash

CUPERTINO – An 11-year-old girl died last week of injuries she suffered in a suspected DUI crash late last month in Cupertino, South Bay authorities confirmed Monday. Three other children – ages 8, 7 and 4 – were also injured in the collision. They were treated and released from area hospitals, said Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Brooks Jarosz. The 11-year-old girl was pronounced dead just after 5 p.m. on May 1, according to Jarosz. The county Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release her identity once it is confirmed and her next of kin is notified. The crash happened around 6:15 p.m. on April 27 near Foothill and Stevens Creek boulevards. The driver of a silver Mazda pickup truck collided with another vehicle and hit a power pole. The four children, who were on the sidewalk at the time, were also struck. The driver – identified as a 38-year-old Cupertino man – was arrested and booked into county jail on charges of driving under the influence of drugs causing seriously bodily injury. The sheriff’s office is awaiting the suspect’s toxicology report, according to Jarosz. “Once

Boeing Starliner launch delayed due to possibly faulty rocket valve

Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner crew ship approaches the International Space Station on the company’s second test flight in May 2022. ( NASA’s Johnson Space Center) The launch of Boeing’s Starliner capsule to the International Space Station was scrubbed Monday evening due to a malfunctioning valve on the Atlas V rocket that would blast it into space. It was not immediately certain when it would be rescheduled. The rocket is a reliable workhorse and is made by the United Launch Alliance, a joint venture of Boeing and Lockheed Martin. After years of delays in Boeing’s Starliner program, the launch with two astronauts aboard is considered crucial. NASA said an oxygen relief valve on the rocket’s Centaur second stage was “buzzing,” or rapidly opening and closing, and would be closely examined to determine whether it needed to be replaced because of cycling too many times. The space agency said the launch could be rescheduled as soon as Tuesday or possibly Friday or Saturday. NASA officials said that the crew was never in danger and that the launch might have proceeded if it were a satellite payload. The decision

Long Beach officer killed boy, 17, during standoff, police say

Long Beach police said Monday that a person killed during a standoff with officers last month was a 17-year-old boy. On the night of April 26, police were called to a home in the 6800 block of Cerritos Avenue, where a male with a gun was reported to have broken in and demanded items from a minor and two adults inside, the Long Beach Police Department said in a statement. The suspect, found in the yard of the residence, was believed to be armed, police said. “Officers engaged in verbal de-escalation for over an hour as they tried to negotiate the suspect’s surrender,” the statement reads. A replica firearm was recovered by Long Beach police at the scene of a fatal police shooting of a 17-year-old boy. (Long Beach Police Department) A SWAT team had been called in and was “on scene and preparing to deploy” when an officer shot the boy, according to police. The teen was struck once in the upper body. He died at a local hospital. Officers recovered a replica firearm from the scene, the police statement said. The teenager was

Two Sheriff’s Officials Testify in Murder Case Evidentiary Hearing

An Orange County sheriff’s sergeant and a retired sheriff’s lieutenant testified Monday that no one has spoken to them from their department or the District Attorney’s Office about allegations in an evidentiary hearing about illegal use of jailhouse informants in a Sunset Beach murder case. The testimony by Orange County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Michael Padilla and retired Lt. Roger Guevara raises the issue of who pledged to invoke their Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination in a previously scheduled evidentiary hearing three years ago that led to a retrial of the defendant. Padilla and Guevara took the stand Monday in the evidentiary hearing on the prosecution of Paul Gentile Smith, 64, who is charged with killing 29-year-old Robert Haugen in Sunset Beach on Oct. 24, 1988. Smith was convicted in 2010 of murder with special circumstance allegations of torture and robbery, and he pleaded guilty to solicitation to kill or attack the lead investigator in the case, sheriff’s investigator Raymond Wert. Three years ago, prosecutors capitulated on a motion for a new trial on the eve of a scheduled evidentiary hearing in the case granted by

Suspect Fatally Shot by Long Beach Police was 17-Year-Old Boy

A home-invasion suspect who was fatally shot by Long Beach police last month was a 17-year-old boy from San Bernardino, police said Monday. The teen’s name was not released. Long Beach police responded at about 8:35 p.m. April 26 to a residence in the 6800 block of Cerritos Avenue regarding a person with a gun. Upon arrival, they learned a home invasion robbery was in progress and the suspect was still in the yard of the house, police said. Officers surrounded the home and made contact with the teen and saw he was armed with what appeared to be a firearm. Officers spoke to the suspect for over an hour in hopes of de-escalating the situation, police said. A SWAT team was called and was preparing to deploy when the suspect was shot by police. It was unclear exactly what prompted the shooting. The suspect was struck once in the upper body. Long Beach Fire Department paramedics treated the suspect at the scene and subsequently took him to a hospital, where he died from his injuries, authorities said. A replica gun was recovered at the

Met Gala was in full bloom with Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Mindy Kaling among the standout stars

UPPER EAST SIDE, Manhattan — The Met Gala and its fashionista A-listers on Monday included Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya and a parade of others in a swirl of flora and fauna looks on a green-tinged carpet lined by live foliage. Lopez went for silver leaves in a second-skin goddess gown and Zendaya was all vamp and fantasy in a rare double appearance on the steps of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Both were co-chairs of the annual fundraiser at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, along with Chris Hemsworth and Bad Bunny. The museum’s exhibition this year was “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” which officials say involves pieces from their archives, some so delicate they’ll be laid out in glass coffins like “Sleeping Beauty.” Guests for the night were told to follow a dress code and the theme is “The Garden of Time,” inspired by J.G. Ballard’s 1962 short story of the same name. It’s Met Gala time and the fashion parade of A-listers included a swirl of flora and fauna looks on a green-tinged carpet surrounded by foliage.
