‘Mama’ Cass Elliot wasn’t killed by a ham sandwich, daughter says. Sorry to skewer that myth

Another music legend has fallen: The mighty good one that the Mamas & the Papas singer Cass Elliot choked to death on a ham sandwich apparently is not true. That’s according to “Mama” Cass’ daughter, Owen Elliot-Kugell, who was only 7 and living in the United States when her mom died in a borrowed London flat. Now, Elliot-Kugell has pieced together details of her mother’s death for her book, “My Mama, Cass,” which dropped Tuesday. “I would go over to kids’ houses after school and eventually one of their parents would ask me, ‘Did your mom really die choking on a ham sandwich?’” Elliot-Kugell told People. “First of all, the chutzpah to say that to a child is just crazy, but it happened a lot. So I felt it was my duty to figure out what that story was all about. “There was a ham sandwich, but she didn’t eat it and she didn’t choke on it. So enough with the jokes,” Elliot-Kugell told the BBC. The “California Dreamin’” singer was performing solo in 1968 after a few years with the Mamas & the Papas

A new doc contains fresh allegations against Kevin Spacey. Our takeaways from ‘Spacey Unmasked’

In October 2017, the same month that a New York Times investigation into allegations of sexual harassment and assault by movie mogul Harvey Weinstein set off the #MeToo movement, actor Anthony Rapp , emboldened by the outpouring of stories, publicly accused Kevin Spacey of making a sexual advance on him in 1986, when Rapp was 14 years old. Spacey swiftly responded on social media that he did not recall the incident, “But if I did behave then as he describes, [I] owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior and I am sorry for the feelings he has described carrying with him all these years.” Since then, the Oscar and Emmy winner, whose credits include “The Usual Suspects,” “American Beauty” and “House of Cards,” has faced allegations of sexual assault and misconduct from numerous other men and lost a $31 million judgment to “House of Cards” production company MRC for violating the company’s sexual harassment policy. (Spacey was found not liable in Rapp’s federal civil suit against him, and a London jury in July 2023 acquitted Spacey on nine

Billionaires sue L.A. for right to demolish Marilyn Monroe’s house

In January, fans and conservationists celebrated when the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission recommended landmark status for Marilyn Monroe’s home, a crucial step in saving the residence from being demolished. The new owners of the Brentwood property were less ecstatic. They sued the city of L.A. on Monday for the right to demolish it, claiming that city officials acted unconstitutionally in their efforts to designate the home as a landmark and accusing them of of “backdoor machinations” in trying to preserve a house that doesn’t meet the criteria for status as a historic cultural monument. The lawsuit comes from billionaire heiress Brinah Milstein and her husband, former reality TV producer Roy Bank, who bought the Spanish Colonial-style home last summer for $8.35 million and immediately laid out plans to raze it. They owned the house next door and hoped to combine the two properties to expand their place, according to the lawsuit. Monroe bought the house in 1962 for $75,000 and died there six months later after an apparent overdose at the age of 36. The phrase “Cursum Perficio” — Latin for “The journey ends

Bethenny Frankel, fiancé Paul Bernon reportedly split after nearly six years together

Reality star Bethenny Frankel and her fiancé, Paul Bernon, have reportedly split. The former “Real Housewives of New York” star and the film producer called off their engagement about two months ago and after nearly six years together, Us Weekly reported Monday. Representatives for Frankel and Bernon did not immediately respond Tuesday to The Times’ requests for comment. “It just wasn’t going to work,” a mutual friend of the former couple told Us Weekly. “They are so different — he’s an under-the-radar kind of guy.” The “ReWives” podcast host reportedly kept her 10-carat emerald-cut diamond engagement ring — valued at approximately $1 million — confusing her droves of social media followers when she continued to wear it in recent weeks. She and Bernon began dating in October 2018 after meeting on a dating app and began living together. “I was pretty lucky when I walked in and saw him,” Frankel told People in April 2021. “He had a twinkle. He came as advertised — better than advertised. He overshot the mark.” The two briefly split in October 2020 but reunited in January 2021. About two

Police officers won’t be forced to disclose their gender identity to state officials following lawsuit

Police officers will no longer be required to disclose their own gender identity when they report details of traffic stops to the state in an effort to end a lawsuit over the issue. Sacramento County Superior Court Judge Christopher Krueger last week approved a permanent injunction barring California Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta’s office from requiring the information, which was first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle. Bonta’s office did not contest evidence submitted by the police organizations who filed suit earlier this year alleging the disclosure rules violated their privacy rights under state law. The agency wrote in a court filing in April that it continues to dispute plaintiffs’ claims, however, the group wanted to resolve the case. Bonta’s office did not immediately respond to a request for further comment Tuesday. At the heart of the issue is recently enacted regulations under the Racial and Identity Profiling Act, a state law passed in 2015 that requires California police officers to document information about people they encounter during situations such as traffic stops and submit that data to the state. In January, new regulations required officers

Michael Meiser, 39, was arrested last week by the Sheriff Department’s Internal Criminal Investigations Bureau. The exact charges were not listed on the jail’s inmate information center. However, the Los Angeles Times cites unnamed sources who say Meiser worked at the North County Correctional Facility in Castaic and was arrested for smuggling heroin into the complex. Landlord sentenced 20 years in prison in murder-for-hire plots

A North Hollywood landlord convicted of hiring a hitman to kill two opponents, then hiring an arsonist to torch his own apartment building, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. Arthur Raffy Aslanian, 55, of La Cañada Flintridge repeatedly resorted to violence to settle business disputes and avoid paying debts, federal prosecutors argued during his five-day trial last July. A jury found him guilty on two counts of conspiracy and three charges related to murder for hire and arson, and on Monday a federal judge handed down the 20-year sentence. According to prosecutors, Aslanian hired a gang member in April 2022 to kill two people: his former bankruptcy attorney, whom he owed more than $261,000 in legal fees, and a man who had successfully sued Aslanian. “This defendant thought he could get away with murder by financing a murder plot against two of his rivals,” said United States Atty. Martin Estrada. “This case should serve as a cautionary tale to those who would resort to violence to settle their disputes: You will be caught and the consequences will be severe.” According to prosecutors, Aslanian

Knife-wielding assailant is fatally shot after attacking guard at Hollywood Metro station

A knife-wielding man was shot and killed after stabbing a security guard at a Hollywood Metro station Tuesday morning, authorities said. Los Angeles Police Department officers responded about 9:10 a.m. to 1500 North Vermont Avenue to a report of a security guard being stabbed, according to Officer Kevin Terzes. A man was found trespassing during a security sweep of the non-public area at the Vermont/Sunset station, according to a statement from Metro spokesperson Dave Sotero. A security guard and the man then got into an altercation on the platform, in which the guard used pepper spray and the man stabbed the guard in the leg. The security guard then shot the man twice, according to LAPD Officer Tony Im. The man fled on foot to a local hospital in Hollywood, where he was pronounced dead. The security guard was also hospitalized in an undisclosed condition. Last week, hundreds of Metro drivers held a sick-out protest in response to the growing number of assaults on drivers. Dozens of bus routes were delayed as a result. About 360 operators, or about 10% of drivers for the Los

L.A. City’s homelessness website falls short of goal to be transparent, critics say

Useful it may be. User-friendly or transparent it’s not. That’s the judgment of a 10-page report card on the website mounted by the city of Los Angeles last month to comply with a federal court order that it give the public access to all invoices for city-financed homeless initiatives. In a biting critique, the plaintiffs in a lawsuit against the city describe the city website as “overly technical and barebones,” “not user-friendly or intuitive,” “very process/procedural oriented” and burdened with extraneous information such as committee meeting agendas. “The site is adequate if you know what you’re looking for or looking at and know how to read financial and statistical reports, but not helpful for the general public,” they wrote in a letter to the court. To achieve the court’s goal, they said, the city should develop the site with charts, explanatory narratives, high-level statistics and consistent data formats, so that users could see what the city money is being spent on and what results it is achieving. In effect, it should be more like the websites customers use to track their investments. The lawsuit was filed

L.A. County deputy arrested for allegedly smuggling heroin into jail, sources say

A sheriff’s deputy who was part of a task force focused on keeping Los Angeles County’s jails free of drugs and gang activity was arrested last week and accused of smuggling drugs into a county jail, according to booking records and multiple law enforcement sources. Michael Meiser, 39, was arrested April 30. Jail records show he was booked on suspicion of an unspecified felony on May 1. L.A. County Sheriff’s Department records show Meiser worked at North County Correctional Facility as an investigator. He worked with the jail’s anti-gang unit, known as Operation Safe Jails, according to two law enforcement sources who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation. One of those sources and another law enforcement official, who also was not cleared to speak publicly about the case and requested anonymity, told The Times that Meiser was arrested for allegedly smuggling heroin into the the jail complex in Castaic. Jail records show Meiser was cited and released without bail last week. He did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment on Tuesday and it was not clear
