Dueling protesters clash at UCLA hours after police clear pro-Palestinian demonstration at Columbia

By STEFANIE DAZIO, ETHAN SWOPE, JAKE OFFENHARTZ and JOSEPH B. FREDERICK (Associated Press) LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dueling groups of protesters clashed Wednesday at the University of California, Los Angeles, grappling in fistfights and shoving, kicking and using sticks to beat one another. Hours earlier, police burst into a building at Columbia University that pro-Palestinian protesters took over and broke up a demonstration that had paralyzed the school while inspiring others. After a couple of hours of scuffles between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli demonstrators at UCLA, police wearing helmets and face shields formed lines and slowly separated the groups. That quelled the violence, and the scene was calm as day broke. Tent encampments of protesters calling on universities to stop doing business with Israel or companies that support the war in Gaza have spread across the country in a student movement unlike any other in the 21st century, reaching from New York to Texas and California. The ensuing crackdown by police on some college campuses has stirred echoes of the much larger student protest movement during the Vietnam War era. There have been confrontations with law

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene vows to force a vote next week on ousting House Speaker Mike Johnson

By LISA MASCARO and KEVIN FREKING (Associated Press) WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said Wednesday she would call a vote next week on ousting House Speaker Mike Johnson, forcing her colleagues to choose sides in a difficult showdown after Democratic leaders announced they would provide the votes to save the Republican speaker’s job. Speaking outside the Capitol, Greene ranted against Republican Party leaders at the highest levels and pushed back against their public entreaties, including from Donald Trump, to avoid another messy political fight so close to the November election. With her was Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., one of the few lawmakers to join her effort. “We need leaders in the House of Representatives that are going to get this done,” said Greene, R-Ga., holding up a red “MAGA” hat from Trump’s “Make America Great Again” campaign movement. “Mike Johnson is not capable of that job,” she said. In pressing ahead next week, she said that “every member of Congress needs to take that vote.” The standoff with Greene, one of Trump’s most enthusiastic supporters, risks throwing Republican control of the House

49ers’ depth chart: Where new rookies fit into the mix behind top-level stars

SANTA CLARA — Here is a look at how the 49ers’ depth chart sets up after the NFL Draft (*indicates starter): QUARTERBACK *Brock Purdy Josh Dobbs Brandon Allen Tanner Mordecai Purdy’s record-setting season (4,280 yards) after his elbow liagement repair alleviates concerns about his backups. But last year’s options at this time – Sam Darnold, Trey Lance – had more upside than this year’s group. Best-case scenario: Purdy produces big again, then scores a big contract next year. RUNNING BACK *Christian McCaffrey *Kyle Juszczyk (FB) Elijah Mitchell Isaac Guerendo Jordan Mason Patrick Taylor Cody Schrader As McCaffrey seeks to defend his NFL rushing crown like Joe “The Jet” Perry did on the 49ers 70 years ago, his immediate backup should be Mitchell, again. But, because of Mitchell’s knee issues and injury history, the 49ers may be more compelled to summon rookie Guerendo’s 4.33-second 40-yard speed. Schrader, undrafted after leading the SEC in rushing at Missouri, could be seen as the next diamond in the rough to flourish in the Shanahan system. WIDE RECEIVER *Brandon Aiyuk *Deebo Samuel Jauan Jennings Ricky Pearsall Jacob Cowing Chris Conley
