Lakers beat Pelicans, advance to face Nuggets in the playoffs

NEW ORLEANS —  D’Angelo Russell walked to the bench in the first quarter, goading the New Orleans crowd to jeer. The Lakers guard had just gotten tangled up with Pelicans fan favorite and All-NBA pest Jose Alvarado, the two players both being called for technical fouls. The crowd loved it. As Alvarado led a New Orleans second-half comeback, the fiery guard jawed right at Russell every time he beat him off the dribble, every time he made the right pass or hit the big shot. But with Alvarado stuck at the table watching, Russell stood open in front of the Pelicans bench. And as Austin Reaves kicked the ball to Russell, he had a chance for revenge. He got it. “Big-time shot,” LeBron James said. Russell’s huge corner three and two Anthony Davis free throws after an offensive rebound were the big plays in the big moments, the Lakers advancing to the playoffs with a 110-106 win in the play-in game at Smoothie King Arena. The Lakers will get Denver in the first round beginning on Saturday (5:30 p.m., ABC), a Western Conference finals rematch from

Review: ‘Home Alone’ with fangs, ‘Abigail’ is a comedy that goes violently wrong for kidnappers

The filmmaking team known as Radio Silence, made up of directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, plus producer Chad Villella, struck black (comedy) gold with their 2019 horror-thriller “Ready or Not,” about a young bride, played by Samara Weaving, who has to battle her way out of a murderous game hosted by her wealthy soon-to-be in-laws. The film demonstrated their mastery of coupling an irreverent tone with splashy violence, and netted the team the responsibility of making the next two “Scream” movies, the first without Wes Craven behind the camera. With their latest feature, “Abigail,” Universal gets into the Radio Silence business, hoping that their brand of female-driven horror can pay big dividends at the box office (and birth a franchise?). With a script by Stephen Shields and Guy Busick, who co-wrote “Ready or Not,” Radio Silence have delivered what is essentially a spiritual sequel to their breakout hit, this time with vampires rather than superstitious old-money sadists, and starring “Scream” queen Melissa Barrera. Once again, the setting is an old creepy mansion filled with taxidermy and firelight. Once again, our heroine is a steely

USC valedictorian’s grad speech is canceled: ‘The university has betrayed me’

When Asna Tabassum learned that USC had barred her from speaking at next month’s graduation, she hadn’t yet planned what she would say in her remarks, beyond that she would convey a message of hope. University leaders who announced the decision Monday, after pro-Israel groups criticized a link on Tabassum’s Instagram page as evidence of her being antisemitic, didn’t know the theme of her speech because she hadn’t shared it with them, the class valedictorian said an interview with the Times on Tuesday. Tabassum, a biomedical engineering major, said that in addition to hope, she was thinking of touching on “how we must continue to use our education as a privilege to inform ourselves and ultimately make a change in the world.” In barring Tabassum from giving a three to five minute speech in front of 65,000 people during the May 10 ceremony, USC Provost Andrew T. Guzman cited the need to “maintain campus safety and security.” The university alluded to unnamed threats but has not publicly detailed them. The move was unprecedented for a ceremony where students regularly make political and cultural statements through

SF Giants’ bullpen backslides in loss to lowly Miami Marlins

MIAMI — The Giants’ relief corps, maligned for the season’s opening week, had started to turn things around on this road trip. That is, until Jordan Hicks exited his start Tuesday, handing off a tied game to Ryan Walker to begin the bottom of the sixth. The score didn’t stay even for long. Walker lived up to his last name, and Taylor Rogers wasn’t much more effective. The relief duo allowed the Marlins to score three runs in the sixth inning, which put the game out of reach for the Giants in a 6-3 loss in front of another sparse crowd at loanDepot Park. “We gave up some runs there, especially in the sixth,” manager Bob Melvin said. “Not Walk’s best day, but he’s been pretty reliable for us. Once it’s a tied game, we feel pretty good about bringing him in there.” Brought in to face the left-handed Luis Arraez with the bases loaded and one run already in, Rogers got ahead 0-1, then fired a 93-mph fastball. Arraez, a two-time batting champ, laced the pitch into left field, and Tim Anderson scored easily

Venezuela shuts embassy in Equador to protest raid on Mexican embassy

By Regina Garcia | Associated Press MEXICO CITY — Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro ordered the closure of his country’s embassy and consulates in Ecuador on Tuesday in solidarity with Mexico in its protest over a raid by Ecuadorian authorities on the Mexican embassy in Quito. Maduro and other presidents participating in a virtual meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States expressed their support for Mexico’s request to have the United Nations suspend Ecuador from the world body over the April 5 raid. But Maduro was the only one to announce the recall of a diplomatic mission. “The condemnation has been unanimous, total, absolute,” Maduro said, referring to the excoriation Ecuador’s move has drawn. “No one today in this world comes out to defend this barbaric act.” Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa had ordered authorities to raid the Mexican diplomatic outpost to arrest the country’s former Vice President Jorge Glas, a convicted criminal and fugitive who was holed up at the embassy since December. Mexico granted him asylum hours before the raid. The extraordinarily unusual use of force drew immediate condemnation from governments around

Man thought Uber driver was part of a scam. So he shot her.

By Danny Freeman, Fabiana Chaparro and Chris Boyette | CNN An 81-year-old Ohio man is charged with murder after he shot a female Uber driver he mistakenly believed was working with a scammer and attempting to extort him, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office. William Brock shot Loletha Hall several times outside his South Charleston home on March 25, according to a criminal complaint. Hall was taken to a local hospital where she died. Brock told police that prior to the shooting he had received threatening phone calls from a male caller who claimed one of Brock’s relatives was being held in jail, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office. The caller then asked Brock to wire money for the relative’s bond, and when Brock resisted, the caller began threatening to harm him and his family. When 61-year-old Hall arrived in her Uber at Brock’s residence, he shot her multiple times, the release states. Brock believed Hall had a connection to the scam caller and would kill him and his family, according to a 911 call he made after shooting her, authorities said. Police

California spent $3.7 billion reducing wildfire fuel. Bill would make insurers factor that into coverage

Insurers in California have sounded the alarm: A warming climate has dramatically raised the risk of devastating wildfires, and with it the cost of providing coverage. But now a Peninsula lawmaker says those insurance companies should credit the state and homeowners for the work done to reduce our vulnerability to wildfires. State Sen. Josh Becker, a Menlo Park Democrat, has introduced a bill that would require insurers to consider the state’s efforts to thin flammable brush and trees as well as property owners’ steps to make their homes more fire resistant, such as covering vents and clearing vegetation. Those efforts would need to be incorporated into their risk modeling to determine coverage decisions and costs. “What we’re seeing is that in addition to the impact of home hardening, that forest treatment is going to have a big impact on wildfire risk, and that’s not being taken into account,” Becker said. “You have to take these into consideration.” Becker’s bill, SB 1060, comes as state officials scramble to prop up a home insurance market on the brink of collapse, with major insurers restricting coverage and refusing

Violent sexual assault suspect at large in Southern California, police say

Police have released a grainy image taken from surveillance footage of a man believed to be responsible for a violent sexual assault on a woman who was sitting in her car outside of a restaurant in Pasadena on Saturday. The terrifying ordeal unfolded at around 8:40 p.m. on Sierra Madre Villa Avenue, north of Foothill Boulevard, authorities with the Pasadena Police Department said in a news release.   “The suspect got into the car with her,” PPD Lt. Tim Bundy told KTLA’s Jennifer McGraw. “He produced a knife and forced her to drive to another location in Pasadena where he then sexually assaulted her.”   Police said the woman was able to fight back, fend off the man and call 911 when he fled the area.   “It’s absolutely scary and this guy is a straight predator,” Lt. Bundy said. “That’s why we want to get the word out there. We’re actively searching for him, obviously, but we want people to be aware that he’s still out there at this point.”   The suspect is described as an approximately 30 to 40-year-old Black male, around
