Oak Fire survivor faces new challenge after leg amputation

MARIPOSA COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — When we first met veteran Rodney McGuire at an Oak Fire evacuation center in July of 2022, his most valued possessions were packed into his car. Including a crocheted portrait of The Last Supper made by his grandmother, a symbol of his faith then and now. A lot has changed since we last talked to Rodney. Most notably, he lost his leg. “It broke off of this tree right here. broke into four pieces,” said McGuire. In February, part of a burned tree, which he says should have been removed by clean up crews, fell on his leg. That caused a blood clot and a whole lot of pain. “If I could have chewed it off I would have. I told them, give me a saw I’ll do it myself,” said McGuire. His leg had to be amputated. His property is lined with charred, hazardous trees. Damage to his drainage system has left a muddy mess. He’s still living out of a trailer until his new house is ready, more difficult than ever now that he’s in a wheelchair. “I

Clippers hold off Suns to clinch a playoff spot

PHOENIX —  Behind a triple-double from Russell Westbrook, the Clippers clinched a playoff berth Tuesday, avoiding the NBA’s postseason play-in tournament by withstanding a furious Phoenix Suns’ rally for a 105-92 win that guaranteed them at least a top-five finish in the Western Conference standings. None of that should come as a surprise: The Clippers have finished in the top five in the regular-season standings nine times in the last 12 seasons and it would have taken an epic collapse in the season’s final week not to do so again. What they haven’t done is make a long playoff run, reaching the conference final only once in franchise history. And that makes Tuesday’s triumph just the first step on a familiar journey that will only get harder as it gets longer. As for who and where the Clippers will play in the postseason, that could be determined as early as Wednesday’s rematch with the Suns in Los Angeles. (Spoiler alert: It will probably be Dallas, the Clippers’ first-round opponent in two of the last four seasons. The Clippers won both series.) But until the Clippers clinch

Lakers clinging to ninth place in West after loss to Warriors

In the months before, the frailty of the NBA season seems more abstract, each game representing an equal 1.2% slice of the season. When you’re in the grind of it, the tomorrows eclipse any real finality. Until the end gets here — and then, for most, all you’re left with is “if only.” If only the Lakers had been sharper out of the in-season tournament, if only it hadn’t taken so long to find their shooting stroke, if only they had held tighter onto the rope against Brooklyn and Sacramento. If only they’d been a little luckier, a little better. If only they had more time. With the end of the season barreling toward them, the Lakers played what could end be their final home game, losing a key game for postseason positioning 134-120 to Golden State. The Lakers (44-35) lead the Warriors by half a game for ninth in the West and are tied with 35 losses, with Golden State owning the season tiebreaker. The Lakers finish the season in Memphis and New Orleans this weekend, their postseason fate largely out of their hands.

Missouri executes death row inmate Brian Dorsey

New Riverside City Council may reverse contracts OK’d by old council

The first action of the new Riverside City Council was to potentially reverse a move by the previous one. Riverside’s outgoing council voted Tuesday, April 9, to extend employment agreements with the city attorney and city manager. But hours later — after three new members were sworn in — the new council decided to reconsider the pacts at a future meeting. At the council’s afternoon session, a four-year agreement and an annual pay increase of about $49,500 for City Attorney Phaedra Norton won unanimous approval. And a three-year extension of City Manager Mike Futrell’s agreement was approved 6-1. Riverside City Manager Mike Futrell is seen during the Tuesday, April 9, 2024, Riverside City Council meeting. Power pitching: Marsh deals as Valley Christian baseball takes down Serra in WCAL heavyweight showdown

SAN JOSE — Pitching has been the key to success this season for both the Valley Christian and Serra baseball teams. And when those two ball clubs, the two top-ranked teams in the Central Coast Section, met Tuesday at Valley Christian, which team pitched better was expected to be the biggest single influence on the outcome. Junior southpaw Quinten Marsh was up for the occasion, throwing a complete-game four-hitter, allowing one unearned run, to lead Valley Christian to a 4-1 victory and into a tie with Serra on top of the West Catholic Athletic League standings. Valley Christian, now 16-2 overall and 4-1 in the WCAL, went into the game with a 1.20 team ERA. Serra (13-3, 4-1) had its team ERA rise to 1.52 after one of its co-aces, Sam Kretsch (4-1, 1.83), incurred his first loss of the season. Marsh, who has already committed to Stanford as a junior, is now 6-2 on the season. “Today what was really working for me was my slider,” Maths said. “They weren’t biting on my changeup early. Just knowing my defense behind me was making great

Kyle Harrison strikes out eight, but offensive struggles plague Giants again

SAN FRANCISCO — After striking out five consecutive batters in the early innings against the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night, Kyle Harrison was feeling his fastball. Running his heater up to 95 mph, the San Francisco Giants left-hander was watching the Nats whiff over and over as he offered the pitch in the upper parts of the strike zone. Eventually, the Nationals caught on. Jacob Young stroked a high fastball into center field for a single, then CJ Abrams hammered another one 423 feet over the right-center field wall as the Nationals’ big third inning paved the way for their 5-3 win over the Giants in front of 24,380 fans at Oracle Park. “I could’ve been a little more fine with that pitch (to Abrams),” Harrison said. “It was a well-enough pitch for me, but a good swing, to say the least. It definitely hurt me.” Harrison was otherwise terrific over six sparkling frames. His changeup was disappearing at the bottom of the zone. His command was mostly sharp. He didn’t walk a single batter, allowed just five hits and struck out eight, his highest

San Jose: Man dies of injuries he suffered in January crash

SAN JOSE – A man died earlier this month of injuries he suffered in a wrong-way collision in early January, police said Tuesday. The two-vehicle collision was reported around 10:45 p.m. on Jan. 7 at McKee Road and Francis Drive, San Jose police spokesperson Stacie Shih said in a news release. The man was traveling southbound on Francis Drive in a 2017 Toyota Tacoma when he entered the intersection against a red light and proceeded westbound on McKee Road in the eastbound lane, Shih said. The Toyota then crashed into a 2004 Buick Rendezvous traveling eastbound on McKee Road. Shih said the Toyota continued westbound on McKee Road and was eventually located along the shoulder of Berryessa Road after it collided with a tree, Shih said. The driver of the Toyota was taken to an area hospital with injuries that were initially considered to be not life-threatening, but he died of them on April 1, Shih said. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release the man’s identity once it is confirmed and his next of kin is notified. The death marked the 13th

Warriors shoot the lights out to hold off Lakers

LOS ANGELES — The Warriors shot it like a highlight reel compilation of their golden era to beat the Lakers in Los Angeles. Against the Lakers, who Golden State could meet next week in a sudden death play-in game, the Warriors hit a season-high 26 3-pointers. They did it efficiently, shooting a scorching 63.4% from deep (their previous best this year was 53.1%). In the 134-120 win, Steph Curry went a perfect 6-for-6 from deep, Draymond Green converted five of seven, and Klay Thompson also poured in five treys. The Warriors (44-35) hadn’t won back-to-back games in Los Angeles since 2019, when LeBron James (33 points, 11 assists) was sidelined for the second half of the season. The victory — Golden State’s eighth in its past nine games — keeps the Warriors’ hopes at advancing up the play-in hierarchy alive. Kings and Suns losses on Tuesday muddy the crowded six-through-10 spots even more, with the Warriors inching within half a game of both the Lakers and Sacramento. The win also gives the Warriors the tiebreaker over Los Angeles. If the Warriors and Lakers face off

Caught up in the FAFSA chaos? Some seniors now have a workaround

There’s a new workaround for some college applicants who have been stymied by the chaotic rollout of the newly designed federal student aid form. The FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid, is all-important for many students looking to afford college. The aim of the U.S. Department of Education in overhauling the process was to make it simpler, but the new system was beset by delays and glitches. Among those hit hardest were low-income families with a parent or student who lacks a Social Security number. But on Tuesday, the California Student Aid Commission provided welcome news, announcing it would offer an alternative financial aid application option for students who are U.S. citizens but have at least one parent without a Social Security number. These students can use the California Dream Act Application to apply for financial aid to attend a UC, Cal State or California community college. Although the Department of Education said these issues had been fixed for students from families that include immigrants, some have continued to face problems. Students have until May 2 to complete a Dream Act application. The

2 women violently assaulted by same man in Southern California, police say

After two women were violently assaulted in separate incidents in Venice, police are warning the community about a dangerous suspect on the loose who is believed to be responsible for both attacks, authorities announced Tuesday.   The first attack occurred on April 6 at around 10:30 p.m., according to a news release from the Los Angeles Police Department.   The female victim was walking in the 2700 block of Strongs Drive near Venice’s Grand Canal when a man approached her from behind and struck her in the head with a hard object. The blow knocked the woman unconscious.   An hour later, the same suspect assaulted a second woman in the same way as she was walking near the Sherman Canal.   Nearby residents located the second victim and immediately called police. Authorities say both victims sustained significant injuries.  Detectives with LAPD’s Pacific Patrol Division responded and began investigating.   A blood stain is still visible on the back porch of Bila Kahan’s home of 25 years, evidence of the violent attack on the Grand Canal.
