Local rotary group and volunteers join together with The Outreach Project to stop hunger worldwide

This is the second year Armando Flores brought his family along to package meals at Ramona Garden Park. When it came around this year, we thought we got to go again, Flores said. He brought even more family members this year to help give back to the community. We were just walking through the festival, and we noticed a lot of ruckus coming from this building, so we took a peek in, and we were like, that’s pretty cool. They invited us in and started doing it and caught a little buzz, Flores said. Volunteers worked through Sunday afternoon to package food for local food banks and pantries. Todd Huebler, a Pismo Beach Rotary Club member tells me a donation of $35 provides 83 meals. Food banks right now are stretched; they have less donations and less volunteers and more people need their services, Huebler said. Just under 50 people gathered near Ramona Garden Park to help package over 10,000 meals. Local clubs like Pismo Beach Rotary, Grover Beach Rotary Club, the AGHS Interact Club, and the Clark Center hosted in collaboration with The Outreach

Former UCLA RN Objects to Release of Some Medical Records to UC Regents

Arguing that the request is too broad, a 60-year-old former UCLA emergency department nurse is asking a judge to quash a subpoena by the UC Regents that seeks medical information about her dating back to 2011 as part of her retaliation lawsuit. Lisa Pettinelli’s Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit alleges she was the subject of a backlash that included her 2021 firing because she spoke openly about her concerns about patient care and employee work conditions. Her claims are for retaliation and failure to prevent discrimination and/or retaliation. The regents’ subpoena asks Pettinelli’s doctor to produce, among other things, all medical, office and emergency room records, radiological reports, medical tests and inpatient and outpatient charts, plus X-ray, MRIs, CT scans and radiological reports dating back to October 2011. In court papers filed Aug. 15 with Judge Kerry Bensinger in advance of a Sept. 24 hearing, Pettinelli’s attorneys maintain the subpoena asks for too much information that has no bearing on the regents’ defense. “The … subpoena is vastly overbroad and seek documents that violate Pettinelli’s right to privacy, has no relevance to this case, nor

Nonprofit hosts beach cleanup where protecting wild animals is the focus

Fletcher Cove on Sunday morning was a dreamy Southern California postcard: deep blue sky, scattered beach umbrellas and not a single cloud cluttering the sky. The sand was also immaculate, at first glance. But those who took a closer look saw the grains sharing space with junk such as scraps of green plastic, chunks of charred wood, nails and discarded grape stems. For two hours, about a dozen volunteers made it their mission to pluck out as much of that trash as they could and leave the beach cleaner than they found it. They all had different reasons for showing up: to do good, to teach their children about volunteerism, to learn about wildlife and conservation. Yet, they were all drawn to the beach by Azi Sharif, the founder of an animal protection nonprofit called Wildlife Jewels, which monitors wildlife on beaches from La Jolla to Orange County and engages in other animal protection and welfare efforts. Beach clean-up organizer Azi Sharif admires the trash collected by a volunteer on Sunday, Aug. 25, at Solana Beach in Fletcher Cove Beach Park, CA. (Brittany Cruz-Fejeran /

Carjacking suspect arrested after pursuit, crash in Vista

He was arrested and taken to a hospital for treatment. Investigators did not clarify what happened to the four other alleged carjackers. Officials also did not say where and when the crash occurred. JD Vance claims Donald Trump would veto legislation establishing a federal abortion ban

NEW YORK — Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance says Donald Trump would not support a national abortion ban if elected president and would veto such legislation if it landed on his desk. “I can absolutely commit that,” Vance said when asked on NBC’s “Meet the Press” whether he could commit to Trump not imposing such a ban. “Donald Trump’s view is that we want the individual states and their individual cultures and their unique political sensibilities to make these decisions because we don’t want to have a nonstop federal conflict over this issue.” The Ohio senator also insisted that Trump, the former president who is the Republican nominee this year, would veto such legislation if it were passed by Congress. “I mean, if you’re not supporting it as the president of the United States, you fundamentally have to veto it,” he said in an interview that aired Sunday. Vance’s comments come after Democrats spent night after night of their national convention in Chicago last week assailing Trump for his role in appointing the Supreme Court Justices who overturned Roe v. Wade, ending the constitutional

Kamala Harris raised $82 million during DNC, $540 million since launch, campaign says

In addition to the nearly 200,000 volunteers signing up to help the campaign. By Fritz Farrow, Gabriella Abdul-Hakim, and Will McDuffie Monday, August 26, 2024 2:55AM Kamala Harris’ campaign touted a surge in donations during the DNC. Meanwhile Sunday, JD Vance claimed Donald Trump would veto a federal abortion ban if elected. CHICAGO — Vice President Kamala Harris raised $82 million the week of the Democratic National Convention, bringing her total haul since launching her candidacy last month to $540 million, her campaign said. The sum is buttressed by nearly $40 million raked in during and after Harris delivered her acceptance speech at the convention on Thursday night, campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon said in a statement, which noted the campaign crossed the half-billion-dollar mark moments before she took the stage. The hour after the vice president’s remarks was the campaign’s best fundraising hour, O’Malley Dillon said. The total reflects what was raised between the campaign, the Democratic National Committee and their joint fundraising committees. In addition to growing its financial war chest, a third of which was from new donors last week, the Harris

Florida rallies to stun Taiwan, win Little League World Series title

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Lathan Norton was sick and didn’t play on Saturday at the Little League World Series. But on Sunday he scored the winning run in the championship. Lathan raced home from second base on an overthrow at first as Lake Mary, Florida, rallied to beat Taiwan 2-1 in eight innings and claim the title. “It was the greatest feeling ever,” said Lathan, who had a fever of 102 on Saturday but recovered before the championship. “I still haven’t had time to let it all sink in, but it feels like the most amazing thing ever.” Taiwan clung to a 1-0 lead from the first inning until Florida’s last at-bat. The Southeast region representatives outhit Taiwan and had a runner on third in three separate innings but couldn’t get a run across. Then, in the bottom of the sixth, Florida got runners on first and second and DeMarcos Mieses, who struck out in his previous two at-bats, delivered. Hitting the gap in shallow left, he gave Chase Anderson enough time to sprint home and tie the game. The bunt that was heard around the

The crash east of Santa Paula Airport was reported shortly before 12:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the Ventura County Fire Department. No passengers were aboard the small plane when it went down in an industrial area in the city of Santa Paula and sparked a blaze, said Andy VanSciver, a firefighter and public information officer for the Fire Department.
