Gavin Stone providing quality innings in a time of uncertainty for Dodgers pitching

The calendar will soon turn from August to September, and though the Dodgers have baseball’s best record following Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Tampa Bay before a sellout crowd of 52,464 in Chavez Ravine, their rotation is filled with enough questions to raise serious doubts about their championship worthiness. Will ace Tyler Glasnow (elbow) and Yoshinobu Yamamoto (shoulder) return from injuries in time to front a playoff pitching staff? Can Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buehler, both struggling in returns from major surgeries, be counted on down the stretch? Will the inconsistent Bobby Miller regain his 2023 rookie form? In Gavin Stone, the Dodgers may have found at least one answer. The rookie right-hander gave up one run and three hits in seven strong innings Sunday, striking out seven, walking two and making only one glaring mistake, grooving a first-pitch sinker that Jonny DeLuca lined over the left-center field wall for a score-tying solo home run to lead off the seventh. “When he’s getting strike one, he’s efficient, getting swing-and-miss, soft contact, that’s who he is, who we’ve come to know and appreciate, and we needed every

‘Deadpool’ and ‘Alien’ top charts again as ‘Blink Twice’ sees quiet opening

By Kaitlyn Huamani | Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — In a sleepy summer weekend at the box office, holdovers reigned supreme as newcomers landed without a splash. “Deadpool & Wolverine” reclaimed first place at the North American box office in its fifth weekend with $18.3 million. Its cumulative international earnings now sit at over $1.2 billion. The Walt Disney Co., which owns 20th Century Studios, claimed the top two spots on the charts for the second weekend in a row with “Alien: Romulus” following close behind the foul-mouthed superhero movie. The latest installment in the 45-year-old franchise brought in $16.2 million in its second weekend after a promising opening. Disney’s “Inside Out 2” also remained on the charts, raking in $2.1 million domestically in its 11th weekend. Its global earnings are now over $1.6 billion. “This is an incredible turnaround for Disney, who almost fell off the radar, shockingly enough, last year and over the course of the pandemic,” said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore. “They got a couple of billion-dollar films out so far and ‘Moana 2’ is still up

Walz’s exit from Minnesota National Guard left openings for critics to pounce on his military record

By Richard Lardner, Jonathan Mattise, Trenton Daniel and Steve Karnowski | Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — John Kolb, a retired Minnesota National Guard colonel, knew Tim Walz by reputation as an “excellent leader” who adroitly guided the enlisted troops in his field artillery battalion. But Kolb was stunned by what he saw when Walz left the military and entered politics. Walz retired from the National Guard in 2005 to run for Congress just before his unit received an order to mobilize for the war in Iraq. Then during the campaign, Walz overstated the rank he held at the point he left the service. “That is not the behavior I would expect out of a senior noncommissioned officer,” Kolb said in an interview. Those two sides of Walz’s service have been in the spotlight now that the Minnesota governor is the Democratic nominee for vice president. Supporters have lauded Walz’s 24 years of service in the National Guard, where he rose through the enlisted ranks and received an honorable discharge. “What I know about Tim Walz is he did his job diligently,” said retired Minnesota National

Robbie Ray leaves SF Giants’ game vs. Mariners with hamstring injury

When the Giants traded away Alex Cobb and Farhan Zaidi declared their starting rotation the best in baseball, they were betting the five-man group as assembled could carry them the eight weeks from the trade deadline to the last day of the regular season and, they hoped, into October. It was a risky wager, with a pair of rookies and another coming off major surgery, and the chances of it paying off took another blow Sunday afternoon when Robbie Ray winced and grabbed at his left hamstring on his 62nd pitch of their series finale against the Seattle Mariners. Ray was removed from the game after a brief consultation on the mound with manager Bob Melvin and trainer Dave Groeschner, and the Giants later said he was diagnosed with left hamstring tightness. The 32-year-old left-hander should undergo tests in the coming days that determine the severity of the injury and what kind of loss the Giants can expect in their rotation. Prior to his exit, on the first batter of the fourth inning, Ray had overcome more difficulties finding the strike zone to allow the

Trump would veto legislation establishing a federal abortion ban, Vance says

By Jill Colvin | Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance says Donald Trump would not support a national abortion ban if elected president and would veto such legislation if it landed on his desk. “I can absolutely commit that,” Vance said when asked on NBC’s “Meet the Press” whether he could commit to Trump not imposing such a ban. “Donald Trump’s view is that we want the individual states and their individual cultures and their unique political sensibilities to make these decisions because we don’t want to have a nonstop federal conflict over this issue.” The Ohio senator also insisted that Trump, the former president who is the Republican nominee this year, would veto such legislation if it were passed by Congress. “I mean, if you’re not supporting it as the president of the United States, you fundamentally have to veto it,” he said in an interview that aired Sunday. Vance’s comments come after Democrats spent night after night of their national convention in Chicago last week assailing Trump for his role in appointing the Supreme Court Justices who

Behind the rhetoric, a presidential campaign is a competition about how to tell the American story

By Ted Anthony | Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Kamala Harris accepted the Democratic nomination “on behalf of everyone whose story could only be written in the greatest nation on Earth.” America, Barack Obama thundered, “is ready for a better story.” JD Vance insisted that the Biden administration “is not the end of our story,” and Donald Trump called on fellow Republicans to “write our own thrilling chapter of the American story.” “This week,” comedian and former Obama administration speechwriter Jon Lovett said Thursday on NBC, “has been about a story.” In the discourse of American politics, this kind of talk from both sides is unsurprising — fitting, even. Because in the campaign season of 2024, just as in the fabric of American culture at large, the notion of “story” is everywhere. This year’s political conventions were, like so many of their kind, curated collections of elaborate stories carefully spun to accomplish one goal — getting elected. But lurking behind them was a pitched, high-stakes battle over how to frame the biggest story of all — the one about America that, as Harris put

Disneyland to remove stereotypes from one of its classic rides

(NewsNation) — Disney is planning to update one of the oldest rides at Disneyland to correct stereotypical depictions of Indigenous people. Peter Pan’s Flight was one of the original rides when Disneyland opened in Anaheim, California, in 1955. It has now come under scrutiny for its racist portrayal of Tiger Lily and her tribe. The current scene shows tribal members — including the chief with his arms crossed — sitting around a campfire. Some Reddit users complained the current ride characters are “problematic” and called them “caricatures” of native people. The update was inspired by a recently revised Never Land Tribe scene at the Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The company says riders can expect to see those revisions at all its locations globally, but did not provide a timeline. TikTok names ‘Songs of the Summer’: Which is No. 1? Before the update in Orlando, Tiger Lily and her tribe were also depicted sitting around a fire with crossed arms while others drummed. The tribesmen have exaggerated features such as broad noses and large feathered headdresses. The updated figures show Tiger Lily and her

Evacuation orders issued for brush fire in Riverside County

A brush fire in Riverside County prompted evacuations Sunday afternoon, officials said. The Tenaja fire started at 11:48 a.m. near the Tenaja Truck Trail in the Cleveland National Forest, authorities said. It was mapped at 100 acres as of 1:45 p.m. Evacuation orders were issued for the area near the truck trail. El Cariso Village was placed under an evacuation warning. Ortega Highway was closed in both directions. An evacuation center was being set up at Lakeside High School in Lake Elsinore, according to the Riverside County Emergency Management Department. Large animals were being accepted at the San Jacinto Animal Shelter. Authorities reported 0% containment. There was no word on the cause of the fire. It’s been a busy year for fires in California, especially compared to the past two relatively mild seasons. That comes after two consecutive wet winters stoked the growth of grasses and other vegetation, and a broiling hot summer dried all that plant material out. As of Friday, 5,435 wildland fires had burned 830,461 acres, compared with a five-year average of 5,325 fires and 583,913 acres over the same period, according

Oasis is ‘definitely maybe’ reuniting after 15 years

Backbeat, the word is on the street that Oasis is finally reuniting after 15 years. After British newspaper the Sunday Times reported this weekend that feuding brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher were likely in the process of getting the band back together, Liam Gallagher seemed to confirm the rumors on social media. In response to a Sunday Times post reporting that the siblings and former bandmates had “settled their differences” and would be returning to the stage as Oasis in London and Manchester next summer, Liam Gallagher wrote on X, “See you down the front.” The “Wonderwall” and “Don’t Look Back in Anger” hitmakers are slated to play “multiple vast gigs” at Manchester’s Heaton Park and London’s Wembley Stadium, according to unnamed “industry insiders” cited in the Sunday Times. Representatives for Oasis, Heaton Park and Wembley Stadium did not immediately respond Sunday to requests for comment. After splitting up in 2009, frontman Liam Gallagher and guitarist Noel Gallagher pursued solo endeavors, and many Oasis loyalists lost hope that the siblings would ever repair their relationship and revive the act. For a decade and a half

A rare but deadly mosquito virus infection has Massachusetts towns urging vigilance

A rare but deadly disease spread by mosquitoes has one town in Massachusetts closing its parks and fields each evening. Four other towns are urging people to avoid going outdoors at night. They’re concerned about eastern equine encephalitis. State health officials announced last week a man in his 80s had caught the disease, the first human case found in Massachusetts since 2020. The town of Plymouth, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) southeast of Boston, announced Friday that it’s closing public outdoor recreation facilities from dusk until dawn each day after a horse in the town was infected with the disease. Meanwhile, state health officials warned that a cluster of four towns south of Worcester – Douglas, Oxford, Sutton and Webster – are at “critical risk” after a man from Oxford caught the virus. State and local health officials urged people in those towns to avoid the peak mosquito biting times by finishing outdoor activities by 6 p.m. until Sept. 30 and then by 5 p.m. after that, until the first hard frost. They also recommend that people across Massachusetts use mosquito repellents when outdoors and
