Opinion: Ignore my brother Bobby, Max Kennedy says

I’m heartbroken over my brother Bobby’s endorsement of Donald Trump. I think often about my father and how he might have viewed the politics of our time. I’m not sure what he would have thought about TikTok or AI, but this much I know for sure: He would have despised Donald Trump. Trump was exactly the kind of arrogant, entitled bully my father used to prosecute. Robert F. Kennedy’s life was dedicated to promoting the safety, security and happiness of the American people. That is why he would have so admired another former prosecutor, Kamala Harris. Her career, like his, has been all about decency, dignity, equality, democracy and justice for all. Trump is the enemy of all that. The only thing he seems to be for is himself and, disturbingly, autocrats such as Vladimir Putin, whom my father would have regarded as an existential threat to our country. Yet my brother now endorses Trump. To pledge allegiance to Trump, a man who demonstrates no adherence to our family’s values, is inconceivable to me. Worse, it is sordid. Earlier this month, as Harris surged in

No Tickets Sold with All Six Powerball Lottery Numbers

There were no tickets sold with all six numbers in Monday evening’s drawing of the multi-state Powerball lottery, pushing the estimated jackpot for Wednesday’s drawing to $176 million. There were three tickets sold with five numbers, but missing the Powerball number, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association, which conducts the game. The one sold in Texas is worth $2 million because the player utilized the Power Play option, where for an additional $1 per play, a ticket with five numbers, but missing the Powerball number, is worth $2 million.

(Myung J. Marco Reus proves to be an instant game-changer for Galaxy in historic win

Three days ago Marco Reus was uncertain when he would be cleared to play for the Galaxy. He had a contract and a uniform but he didn’t have a work permit. And until he had one he would have to watch from the stands. It took the efforts of nearly a dozen people, from lawyers and front-office employees to a congresswoman, to end that stalemate, cutting through enough government red tape to get Reus a visa just in time to get him on the field against Atlanta United. And he made all that work pay off, coming off the bench Saturday to assist on one goal and score the other in a 2-0 victory that extended the Galaxy’s modest MLS win streak to three games and extended their lead in the Western Conference standings to five points over LAFC. The win was the 400th in team history — an MLS first — and the sellout crowd of 25,174 made the Galaxy the first MLS club to draw more than 10 million fans. But afterward the discussion centered on Reus, who completely changed the game when

Shohei Ohtani can’t save Dodgers from pitching woes as winning streak ends

Showtime met Sho-Time on Saturday night, the Dodgers honoring several members of the Lakers teams that won five NBA titles from 1980 to ’88 before the game and treating Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy and the gang to another clutch Shohei Ohtani home run in the middle innings. But unlike Friday night, when Ohtani hit a walk-off grand slam to become the sixth member of baseball’s exclusive 40-homer, 40 stolen-base club, there would be no late-game heroics for the Dodgers slugger. Ohtani turned a one-run deficit into a one-run lead with a 338-foot chip shot over the short wall in right field in the fifth inning, but his towering drive to right with the automatic runner aboard in the 10th fell just short of the warning track, and the Dodgers lost to the Tampa Bay Rays 9-8 in front of a crowd of 48,488 in Chavez Ravine. (Wally Skalij / Los Angeles Times) “Yeah, I did,” manager Dave Roberts said, when asked if he thought Ohtani’s drive off Rays left-hander Garrett Cleavinger had a chance to leave the park. “We’ve seen Cleavinger, we’ve had him, and

Chaos at Koligan Stadium: Massive fight breaks out at Central and Garza High football game

Sunday, August 25, 2024 4:06AM Friday night’s football game between Central and Garza High ended in chaos after a massive fight broke out on the field. FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — What started as a celebration for Central Unified turned into chaos at Koligian Stadium Friday night. The Central High Grizzlies were up 40-0 over the Garza High Guardians when a massive fight broke out between the two sides. Footage obtained by Action News shows the fight escalating to where at least one man was punched inadvertently, but it’s unclear what started the fight on the field. The game was called at the beginning of the 4th quarter. This was the first time Garza High had ever hosted Central High. Central Unified is meeting with the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) on Monday to discuss the next course of action. No suspensions have been given out at this time. The district says it plans to adhere to the direction of the CIF. In a statement, Central Unified Superintendent Ketti Davis called for the community to “continue to focus on promoting respect, sportsmanship, and the values that reflect

California sees a summer of extremes, from heat waves and wildfires to snow

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — An unusually cold weather system from the Gulf of Alaska interrupted summer along the West Coast on Saturday, bringing snow to mountains in California and the Pacific Northwest and prompting the closure of part of a highway that runs through a national park. Parts of Highway 89 through Lassen Volcanic National Park in California were shut down after an estimated 3 inches of snow fell overnight, according to the National Weather Service. Photos posted by the agency and local authorities showed a high-elevation blanket of white on Mount Rainier in Washington along with a dusting of snow at Minaret Vista, a lookout point southeast of Yosemite National Park in California’s Sierra Nevada. Madera County Deputy Sheriff Larry Rich said it was “definitely unexpected” to see snow at Minaret Vista in August. “It’s not every day you get to spend your birthday surrounded by a winter wonderland in the middle of summer,” he said in a statement. “It made for a day I won’t soon forget, and a unique reminder of why I love serving in this area. It’s just one of those

Redondo Beach Warns Drivers of Parking Meter Scam

The city of Redondo Beach warned residents and visitors Saturday of a recent scam involving fake QR Codes stuck to parking meters along the Esplanade and Riviera Village area. The fraudulent QR codes were recently discovered on about 150 parking meters affixed next to the legitimate ParkMobile and PayByPhone labels. The fake code directed motorists to a “paybyphone” website that prompted them to input their location and payment information. Redondo Beach police officers inspected all of the city’s parking meters and removed the fake codes, the city stated. Anyone who feels they were defrauded was urged to call police at 310-379-2477 and file a report. Anyone who received a parking citation after making a payment on the fake QR code, may also call police. Police also wanted to hear from anyone with information on the people believed responsible for the scam.

Two injured, one critically, in arson fire at Chula Vista 7-Eleven

Police have arrested a man suspected of intentionally setting a Chula Vista 7-Eleven on fire Saturday morning, seriously injuring one worker and leaving another in critical condition. Investigators said 47-year-old Jose Carlos Villanueva allegedly entered the convenience store on Broadway near L Street around 8 a.m. and used some type of flammable liquid, likely gasoline, to start the fire. He then fled in a dark sedan. When officers arrived at the location, smoke was billowing out of the front door, police said. A female employee with significant burns had already walked out, but officers could hear another woman inside. The officers were able to pull the second woman out of the 7-Eleven and both of the victims were taken to a local hospital. One of the employees is in critical condition with injuries considered life-threatening, police said. The other woman was seriously hurt. Police were able to identify the suspect’s vehicle and its license plate and entered the information into a criminal database. Around 2 p.m., officers in Redlands, California, roughly 100 miles north, received a notification from a license plate reader system that the

Mission Viejo scores big win in football, and St. John Bosco rallies for dramatic one

Two of Southern California’s top high school football teams, Mission Viejo and St. John Bosco, came away with impressive victories Saturday night. Mission Viejo (2-0) intercepted four passes, returning two for touchdowns, and got three sacks from Jaden Williams in a 35-7 home victory over Santa Margarita. St. John Bosco traveled to Florida for a nationally televised game against Madonna Chaminade and rallied for a 34-27 victory behind two sophomores. Maliq Blackwell-Allen broke loose for a 71-yard touchdown run to break a 27-27 tie in the fourth quarter. Safety Isaia Wily-Ava contributed a sack and interception in the fourth quarter and was covering on a final pass play with nine seconds left. Junior quarterback Matai Fuiava passed for 303 yards and three touchdowns. Mission Viejo took a 14-0 lead at halftime after Brock deFries returned an interception 16 yards for a touchdown late in the second quarter. Jeron Jones added another pick-six, this time 73 yards. Israel launches airstrikes in Lebanon against Hezbollah, which fires rockets at Israel

BEIRUT —  The Israeli military launched what it called preemptive strikes in Lebanon against the militant group Hezbollah early Sunday morning, ratcheting already elevated tensions that could tip into a full-on regional war even as efforts continue to forge a cease-fire in Gaza. The strikes, which began before 5 a.m. local time, hit areas in Lebanon’s south, where Hezbollah has for more than 10 months engaged in an escalating tit-for-tat fight with Israel. Hezbollah has also vowed to avenge the death of its senior military commander, Fuad Shukr, whom Israel assassinated in an airstrike on the Lebanese capital last month. In a statement, the Israeli army said Hezbollah was “preparing to fire missiles and rockets toward Israeli territory. In response to these threats, the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] is striking terror targets in Lebanon.” The effect of the strikes remained unclear early Sunday morning, but Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency said that two people were injured and that strikes had caused extensive damage to water and electricity infrastructure in towns in south Lebanon. Israel declared a state of emergency for 48 hours and temporarily suspended flights

Police warn public of fake QR codes found on Redondo Beach parking meters

Authorities are warning the public after fake QR codes were discovered on parking meters across Redondo Beach. Stickers with the fraudulent QR code were discovered on approximately 150 parking meters along the Esplanade and Riviera Village areas, according to Redondo Beach police. City officials only work with two companies to collect parking fees — ParkMobile and PayByPhone. ParkMobile uses a QR code that directs users to the ParkMobile App.  PayByPhone can accept payments on their app or on their official website. Official QR code stickers provided by the city of Redondo Beach on parking meters. When scanning the fake stickers, users are taken to a website labeled “poybyphone.online” and prompted to input their their location and payment information. The official website is “paybyphone.com.” The fraudulent QR codes were placed under or adjacent to the legitimate stickers. (Redondo Beach Police Department) City officials said all fraudulent QR code stickers have since been removed. “If anyone feels that they have been defrauded, please contact the Redondo

Israel hits locations in Lebanon as Hezbollah launches attack

By Josef Federman and Abby Sewell | Associated Press JERUSALEM — Israel launched intense airstrikes in southern Lebanon early Sunday in what it said was a pre-emptive strike against the Hezbollah militant group, threatening to trigger a broader regionwide war that could torpedo efforts to forge a cease-fire in Gaza. The army said Hezbollah was planning to launch a heavy barrage of rockets and missiles toward Israel. Soon after, Hezbollah announced it had launched an attack on Israel with a large number of rockets and drones as an initial response to the killing of one of its top commanders in a strike in Beirut last month. Hezbollah had vowed a significant response to the targeted killing of Fouad Shukur, raising fears that months of tit-for-tat strikes could escalate into an all-out war. The attacks came as Egypt hosts a new round of talks aimed at ending Israel’s war with Hamas, now in its 11th month. Hezbollah has said it will halt the fighting if there is a cease-fire in Gaza. Iran supports both groups as well as militants in Syria, Iraq and Yemen that might
