2020 election denier drops Michigan high court bid as nominating conventions meet

Associated Press FLINT, Mich. (AP) — The race among Republicans for Michigan’s state Supreme Court, already shaken up by attorney Matthew DePerno ‘s decision to drop out, got a further jolt during Saturday’s nominating convention when the former party chairperson was escorted out of the arena. Kristina Karamo, who was ousted as chairperson in January after less than a year, was told she was not a delegate and two police officers led her out, the Detroit News reported. DePerno said in a Friday night statement that his decision was based on how he could best help former President Donald Trump win Michigan and reclaim the White House. It came just hours before both Republicans and Democrats gathered to choose nominees for two available seats on the court with majority control at stake. DePerno, who rose to prominence repeating false claims about the 2020 election and faces felony charges of trying to illegally access and tamper with voting machines, said he talked to Trump this week and decided he could do more to help Trump win by bolstering the state’s absentee and early voting programs. “This

Islamic State group claims responsibility for knife attack that killed 3 in Solingen, Germany

SOLINGEN, Germany (AP) — The Islamic State militant group on Saturday claimed responsibility for a knife attack that killed three people and wounded eight more at a crowded festival marking this city’s 650th anniversary. The extremist group said on its news site that the attacker targeted Christians and that as a “soldier of the Islamic State” he carried out the assaults Friday night “to avenge Muslims in Palestine and everywhere.” The IS claim couldn’t immediately be verified. It provided no evidence for its assertions. Police later detained a suspect, the internal affairs minister of North Rhein Westphalia state said early Sunday. “We have been following a hot lead all day,” Herbert Reul told “Tagesschau,” the news program of the German public television network ARD. “The person we have been searching for all day has been detained a short while ago.” He was being questioned, Reul said. Reul said police not only had “clues” but also collected “pieces of evidence.” Officials earlier said a 15-year-old boy was arrested early Saturday on suspicion he knew about the planned attack and failed to inform authorities, but he was

Back-to-work order issued for 2 major Canada railroads; union will comply, but lawsuit planned

TORONTO — The Canadian arbitrator appointed to resolve a messy railroad labor dispute to protect the North American economy has ordered employees at the country’s two major railroads back to work so both can resume operating. Saturday’s order means Canadian National will be able to continue operating the trains it restarted Friday morning just over a day after it locked out workers. But Canadian Pacific Kansas City likely won’t be able to restart its operations before 12:01 a.m. Monday, when workers were ordered to return. Railroads play a crucial role in the economy with CPKC and CN delivering more than CA$1 billion (US$730 million) worth of shipments a day and carrying billions of dollars of goods between the U.S. and Canada every month. Even though both companies’ trains in the United States and Mexico continued operating, the lockouts caused a significant disruption. A number of smaller short-line freight railroads that handle local deliveries continued operating across Canada but were unable to hand off shipments to either of the major railroads while they were idle. The Teamsters union representing workers said that it will comply with

Chargers vs. Cowboys takeaways: Offense puts on a show in preseason finale

(Matt Ludtke / Associated Press) After failing to score a touchdown in their first two preseason games, the Chargers utilized big plays against the Cowboys to finally break through. The Chargers’ first touchdown came on a 70-yard end-around by wide receiver Derius Davis after a fake handoff. “I just want to be a spark for this offense and get the momentum rolling,” Davis said. “Going out there first play and just do that was a great experience.” Davis, the team’s primary returner, is trying to carve out a role in the offense. He made the Cowboys defense look lost on the scoring run, showcasing his speed. “I didn’t think he was going to be able to make the turn, but he did,” Harbaugh said. “He did an incredible job working the sideline. Seeing his speed was great as well.” Two possessions later, Easton Stick hit wide receiver Simi Fehoko with a perfectly thrown deep ball on a 78-yard touchdown reception. Fehoko’s play also impressed his quarterback. “The ability to not only catch it but also to score — it was really an incredible play by

Home Invasion Robbers Hit Hollywood Hills Residence

Police were seeking two people Saturday who robbed a multimillion-dollar home in the Hollywood Hills while the homeowners hid inside. The home invasion was reported at 9:55 p.m. Friday in the 1300 block of Sierra Alta Way, near Sunset Boulevard and Doheny Drive, Officer Jeff Lee of the Los Angeles Police Department told City News Service. “The suspects smashed a window, entered the residence and got away with property,” Lee said. The robbers fled in a vehicle before police officers arrived, he said. No description was immediately available. It wasn’t clear how many residents were inside during the robbery, but ABC7 reported that the residents hid inside a bathroom. No injuries were reported, and no estimate of the loss was provided.

Snell can’t find plate, but Giants hold on to beat Mariners

The Giants did a lot of things that normally spell defeat but won anyway Saturday in Seattle. Blake Snell couldn’t find home plate in hometown. The Giants were 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position and left 11 runners on base. But in the end, the Giants bounced back from a difficult defeat with a 4-3 road win over the Seattle Mariners. Spencer Bivens (3-1) got the win with three innings of scoreless relief (and no walks) in back of Snell, and Camilo Doval set up the ninth for Ryan Walker – pitching for the third straight day — with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief with a walk and two strikeouts. Walker pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save. Considering the Giants blew a 5-1 lead Friday night and then watched starting pitcher Snell last only three innings with six walks, coming away with a win at least enabled them to get back over .500 with a 66-65 record. The Mariners, in their second game under Dan Wilson, who took over for the fired Scott Servais, lost for the eight time in the last

In ceremony rich with history, Logan sworn in as new San Diego fire chief

Even before he was officially sworn in as the 19th fire chief in San Diego city history on Saturday, the number held a special significance for Robert Logan. The first African Americans were hired as firefighters in 1919, Logan said at his swearing-in ceremony at Bayview Church of San Diego, not far from where he grew up in Lincoln Park. The first station to desegregate was No. 19 back in 1951, he said. And the same Ocean View Boulevard firehouse was the new chief’s first post. “No one succeeds alone and the strength of our department is in our unity,” Logan, 51, said during his acceptance address before hundreds of friends, colleagues, politicians and members of the public. “Our teamwork is the bedrock on which we will build our future successes.” Every pew inside the historic house of worship was filled with well-wishers and witnesses to the new history of San Diego Fire-Rescue, the sprawling agency responsible for extinguishing fires, answering paramedic calls and patrolling the shorelines of the region’s beaches. Landon Donovan putting mental health at the center of his coaching approach

SAN DIEGO —  Since he first retired from soccer nearly a decade ago, Landon Donovan unretired to play nine games with the Galaxy, spent six months in the Mexican league with León, played eight games in the Major Arena Soccer League, helped found a team in the second-division USL Championship and coached it to two playoff appearances, became part owner of a team in Wales and a strategic advisor to a third-tier team in England, and did soccer commentary for Fox and ESPN. For many athletes retirement means the end of a career; for the peripatetic Donovan, it’s become an opportunity to try out a whole bunch of new ones. His most recent choice may be the most surprising however, because nine days ago Donovan, widely considered the best male player in U.S. soccer history, was named interim coach of a women’s team, the San Diego Wave. “I’m pretty surprised myself,” Donovan said. Yet the most interesting part of the story isn’t so much that Donovan got the job. It’s how he got it. When Wave president Jill Ellis reached out to him earlier this month

(Orlando Ramirez / Getty Images) Aug. 24, 2024 3:49 PM PT SAN DIEGO —  Alyssa Thompson scored her first two goals of the season nine minutes apart Saturday, lifting Angel City FC to a 2-1 win over the San Diego Wave and spoiling the NWSL coaching debut of former Galaxy great Landon Donovan. The victory, which ended the team’s three-game NWSL losing streak, was just the second in league play since May 3 for Angel City (5-9-3), which jumped to eighth place and into a playoff position in the 14-team league standings with nine games remaining. The game also marked the NWSL return of Christen Press, who came off the bench in the 89th minute for her first league appearance in 26 months. A two-time World Cup champion, Press tore her right anterior cruciate ligament eight games into Angel City’s inaugural season in 2022 and needed four surgeries to repair the damage. Press, 35, played limited minutes in a Summer Cup game with San Diego

Ex-Castro Valley High School teacher pleads no contest to sex offense involving student, avoids prison through plea deal

CASTRO VALLEY — A former high school teacher who had been charged with 18 felonies for alleged continued sexual abuse of a student will avoid jail or prison through a plea agreement to a lesser offense, court records show. Keita Hasegawa, 32, pleaded no contest on Aug. 21 to meeting a minor with intent to commit a sex offense, a felony. In late September, he’ll be formally sentenced to one year in prison with a major caveat: The past year Hasegawa has spent out on bail, with a GPS ankle monitor, will count towards his “prison” term, leaving him with no time left to serve, according to court records. Hasegawa’s sentencing has been set for Sept. 26. Prosecutors are expected to dismiss his other charges, which included allegations of molesting the girl and communicating with lewd intent, court records show. Hasegawa was charged last year, and posted $600,000 bail soon after his arrest. He has spent the last year working at a restaurant in the Bay Area and abiding by conditions that include a victim restraining order, GPS ankle monitoring, staying away from unaccompanied minors

Kurtenbach: The 49ers need to put their foot down with Brandon Aiyuk

At this point, we can all agree, that this Brandon Aiyuk situation is weird. I can think of roughly a dozen other descriptors, but few of them are publishable. Months have passed and seemingly no progress has been made on a long-term deal for the 49ers’ second-team All-Pro wide receiver, all while Aiyuk still hanging around the team — he even traveled to Las Vegas for the Niners’ preseason game on Friday — but still flirting with other teams on social media. Meanwhile, general manager John Lynch is constantly in face-to-face meetings with the player. Not his agent. The player. That’s not normal, folks. And where has it gotten them? Nothing appreciable has been accomplished, so all skepticism about something coming together in the next two weeks that precede the Niners’ season opener against the Jets is warranted. Aiyuk wants it all — money, respect, and winning. He wants to be a Niner. Why else would he be hanging around the facility every day? But there’s a problem: The Niners cannot facilitate all of that for him. And the bigger problem: for him, this negotiation —
