San Diego man runs 100 miles to girlfriend’s house in Los Angeles

Most people know of someone who has run a marathon, but imagine doing four in a row. That’s what one San Diego man did when he set out to run all the way to Los Angeles. “[I had this] crazy idea of just running from my front door to my girlfriend’s front door in L.A.,” Aron Greene, 26, said. Crazy is an understatement, especially for someone who just started running marathons only two years ago. Pro Padel player prepares for PPL at Barnes Tennis Center “I do that drive a few times a month,” Greene said. “I was sitting on the [Interstate] 5 in traffic, I was like ‘I bet I could get there faster if I ran.'” To complete the 100-mile trek from San Diego’s Pacific Beach neighborhood to Los Angeles, Greene needed help. Jocko Willink, a former U.S. Navy SEAL and founder of the energy drink brand JOCKO Fuel, stepped up. JOCKO Fuel, who is also a partner of San Diego FC, covered all expenses Greene needed to cover in order to train and eventually make the journey up north. “They did everything

President of local school sentenced for childcare benefits fraud

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The president of an education center in the Rolando Park neighborhood was sentenced to 27 months in prison Wednesday for his involvement in a multi-million dollar childcare benefits fraud scheme. On Wednesday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said Mohamed Muriidi Mohamed, 47, of Spring Valley was one of four people who caused two agencies to pay out millions of dollars in childcare program funds by falsely claiming parents were working at or attending school at the UMI Learning Center although they were not. Two people dead, one person wounded in Point Loma shooting The two agencies — Child Development Associates (CDA) and the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) — administer funds as part of a childcare benefits program under the Department of Health and Human Services. To distribute money, CDA and YMCA both require verification forms to be completed by the parent and their employer and/or school. Federal prosecutors stated that Muriidi issued paychecks to make it seem as if the parents were working at the school but told them not to cash them out. As part of the scheme, childcare

The stabbing occurred around 2:46 a.m. after a dispute. According to SDPD, the victim, identified as a 52-year-old man, had been waiting at the bus stop and trolley platform when a group of men and women who had appeared to be homeless approached. The group then stated that a duffle bag the victim had belonged to them, police said, leading to the confrontation. During the argument, one of the men in the group stabbed the victim’s right forearm. The group then fled the scene. Woman, 20, shot in forearm while standing at street corner in Barrio Logan The 52-year-old was transported to a hospital for treatment. The injury is not considered life threatening at this time. Dodgers designate Jason Heyward for assignment to clear roster spot for Chris Taylor

Jason Heyward is the odd man out in a Dodgers roster crunch, the highly respected veteran outfielder getting designated for assignment to clear a roster spot for returning utility man Chris Taylor, the team announced Thursday. Not even a dramatic pinch-hit, three-run homer in the eighth inning of Tuesday night’s 6-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners could save Heyward’s job, as the Dodgers chose to keep four-time Gold Glove Award-winning center fielder Kevin Kiermaier, versatile utility man Kiké Hernández and Taylor on the bench. Heyward provided another highlight on June 19 in Coors Field when he crushed a pinch-hit grand slam off the right-field foul pole to spark a seven-run ninth inning that gave the Dodgers an 11-9 win over the Colorado Rockies. The 15-year veteran hit just .208 with a .682 on-base-plus-slugging percentage, six homers and 28 RBIs in 63 games in a platoon role this season, but his playing time took a significant hit when Mookie Betts moved from shortstop back to right field upon returning from a left-hand fracture last week. “I think [the decision] is going to be what it’s going

Pat McAfee says ESPN didn’t tell him to stop talking about Caitlin Clark. ‘God’ did

ESPN personality Pat McAfee says he’s been told not to talk about Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark on his show anymore. Told by whom? By “God” and “the universe,” he said Wednesday on “The Pat McAfee Show.” Definitely not by ESPN, the former NFL punter later clarified on X. “ESPN has zero say over my show,” the outspoken and sometimes controversial host wrote. ESPN declined to comment for this story. In June, McAfee opened an episode with a lengthy, pro-Clark monologue in which he referred to the WNBA star as “a white b—.” He apologized the same day. “My intentions when saying it were complimentary just like the entire segment but, a lot of folks are saying that it certainly wasn’t at all,” he wrote on X. “That’s 100% on me and for that I apologize… I have sent an apology to Caitlin as well. Everything else I said… still alllllll facts.” During an on-air discussion with longtime sports broadcaster Rich Eisen on Wednesday, McAfee noted that “the Olympics saved” his show this year and asked Eisen if the same was true for his show.

Homeless encampment at Dockweiler State Beach near LAX cleared by city workers

A homeless encampment that neighbors said had been growing at Dockweiler State Beach in Playa Vista was taken down on Thursday, city officials said. The encampment was occupying a large slice of the beach’s four-mile shoreline next to Los Angeles International Airport, nearby residents said, and had been ignored by state and local government officials even as its problems grew more noticeable in recent weeks. The cleanup arrives more than a month after Gov. Gavin Newsom threatened to take away state funding from counties that don’t show improvement on tackling the homelessness crisis. Dockweiler State Beach sits under the LAX flight path and is in an unusual jurisdictional position — it is part of California’s state park system, its custodial maintenance and lifeguard services are managed by Los Angeles County, and, through an agreement with the county, policing and code enforcement are handled by the city of Los Angeles, according to a county spokesperson. This has proven to be a sore issue for Playa Vista residents who claim that none of the local agencies have taken the initiative to address the encampment. “It’s a little

This California beach city just barred people from smoking in their own apartments, condos

Smokers living in apartments, condos and townhomes in Carlsbad will now have to think twice about lighting up inside their homes. The beach city Tuesday became the first in San Diego County to expressly ban smoking and vaping of cannabis and nicotine products inside all local multifamily residential buildings. While the city’s ordinance prompted some complaints about government prying into the private lives of residents, others applauded city leaders for prioritizing the health of nonsmokers living in units that are inundated by their neighbors’ secondhand smoke. Advocates of the ban noted that cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, resulting in more than 480,000 deaths annually, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Secondhand smoke exposure can cause a variety of ailments, including heart disease, stroke and lung cancer, federal health officials say. “This is more than an annoyance,” resident Katrina Preece told the City Council last year about the effects of secondhand smoke. “This is a painful and alarming health hazard.” Officials in Carlsbad began discussing an ordinance prohibiting smoking inside multifamily properties with three

Court approves $600-million sale of Michael Jackson music to Sony

A Los Angeles appeals court has denied an attempt by Michael Jackson’s mother to prevent the singer’s estate from selling a portion of his songs to Sony Music Group for about $600 million. The appeals court on Wednesday upheld a prior ruling by a probate court that Katherine Jackson’s objections to the transaction do not hold water. The appeals court determined that Michael Jackson’s will grants the musician’s executors “broad powers to buy and sell estate assets in the estate’s best interests” while stipulating that “all of the estate’s assets will be distributed to the trust” — of which the performer’s mother and children are beneficiaries. Katherine Jackson had tried to argue that those provisions were contradictory, but the appeals court disagreed. The appeals court also rejected Katherine Jackson’s challenge on grounds that she “forfeited her contention that the proposed transaction violates the terms of Michael’s will because she did not make that contention” in a lower court. According to court documents, Katherine Jackson had previously complained that selling assets from Michael Jackson’s catalog would violate her son’s wishes, but acknowledged that executors had the

Lawyers for Alabama inmate seek to block his execution by nitrogen gas

Alabama inmate executed with nitrogen gas Alabama inmate put to death in first U.S. nitrogen gas execution 03:00 Days after Alabama scheduled its third execution by nitrogen hypoxia , lawyers for the latest prisoner set to die by this method have asked a federal judge to block the execution order.    In a motion filed Tuesday night in Alabama district court, attorneys representing Carey Dale Grayson challenged the constitutionality of the state’s execution protocol for nitrogen gas, a novel and highly controversial approach that has only been used once before in January 2024. Grayson was convicted of murder and sentenced to death in Alabama in 1996. They argued that Grayson shouldn’t have to be subjected to a procedure that witnesses described as violent, prolonged and generally disturbing to watch after the first execution of Kenneth Smith , who was on death row after being convicted in a murder-for-hire plot. “Following Kenneth Smith’s execution by nitrogen hypoxia—the first in history—and which, by nearly all accounts, was cruel and unusual, Alabama is doubling down by setting execution dates using the same protocol,” Grayson’s attorneys wrote in the

California bill that could open new pathway to homeownership for undocumented immigrants advances in state Legislature

A California bill that would allow undocumented immigrants to qualify for first-time homebuying loans continues to progress in the state Legislature. The bill, formally known as AB 1840, would expand the eligibility requirement for the state’s first-time homebuyer loan program, the California Dream For All Shared Appreciation program, to allow undocumented immigrants who live in the state to use it. Most recently, AB1840 passed the Senate Appropriations Committee last week and now faces a floor vote in the Senate. The bill has already passed the Assembly. California lawmakers halt bill mandating tech firms to pay news outlets, introduce new partnership The California Dream For All Shared Appreciation loan program launched in 2023 and helps qualified first-time homebuyers with down payments. The program was initially created to help low-and middle-income individuals buy homes. Still, Assemblymember Joaquin Arambula (D-Fresno), who introduced the bill, previously told KTLA that the program doesn’t address eligibility based on immigration status. “The program hasn’t been clear about eligibility for undocumented individuals, and AB 1840 addresses that issue,” Arambula told KTLA in an emailed statement. “Let me be clear: anyone who meets the

FBI raids home allegedly bought using tax money by O.C. supervisor’s daughter: LAist

The million-dollar home at the center of a lawsuit alleging the daughter of an Orange County supervisor used tax dollars to buy a house was raided by the FBI Thursday morning, LAist reports. Rhiannon Do, an executive of the Viet America Society and daughter of O.C. Supervisor Andrew Do, bought the house in July 2023. Though she told LAist she “worked hard for her home,” a lawsuit filed by the county accuses Rhiannon Do and the VAS of “pervasive self-dealing, pocketing local and federal funds.” O.C. supervisor’s daughter bought million-dollar home with tax funds, suit says While the civil lawsuit, which claims the VAS received as much as $13.5 million in public funds, remains ongoing, law enforcement raid Thursday morning in Tustin could indicate a criminal investigation as well. FBI spokesperson Laura Eimiller told LAist that “we’re serving a search warrant at that location,” though she could not comment further as the warrant was sealed by the court, she noted “no arrests are planned.” Both father and daughter Do have been spotted at the home this week, despite its unoccupied status, LAist added. The supervisor

The average gas price in California is nearly 70 cents cheaper than this time last year

The average cost of gas has dropped steadily in the last month in California and is dramatically cheaper than this time last year, according to AAA. As of Thursday, Aug. 22, the average cost of regular gas in the state is $4.59. While that’s still more than $1.20 more than the national average and the second highest in the country (Hawaii, $4.65), it’s nearly 70 cents less than the cost from one year ago. The average then was $5.26. The price average fluctuated and kept rising well into the spring, but it has since decreased across the country. The current average of $4.59 is lower than one week ago ($4.605) and one month ago ($4.682) in addition to one year ago. Rescuers happen upon a celebrity while searching for 78-year-old hiker in the California wilderness

Celebrity sightings are to be expected in Los Angeles, but not by a search and rescue crew scouring the San Gabriel Mountains for a missing hiker. The San Dimas Mountain Rescue team ran into former “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno shortly before finding 78-year-old hiker Ki Soo Yang, who had been missing for 30 hours after he became separated from a group climbing Mount Waterman on Saturday afternoon. Someone saw Yang’s missing person’s flier and found the hiker between Mount Waterman and Twin Peaks. The individual contacted authorities and Yang was transported to a local hospital, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release. Yang, who was described as “very fit,” was in “good health but dehydrated” after spending more than a day in the Angeles National Forest, the department said in a social media post. He was reunited with his family. “We are incredibly grateful to everyone involved in the search, especially the good Samaritan whose quick thinking and action played a critical role in this rescue,” according to the Sheriff Department‘s post. “This outcome is a powerful reminder of how

An ex-boyfriend, a bad boss, an operatic tenor. Trump analogies fly at the DNC

So what is former President Trump “like”? Speakers at the Democratic National Convention have some ideas, and this week they’ve offered up plenty of comparisons — and punchlines. Neighbor with a leaf blower Former President Obama, speaking at the convention in Chicago on Tuesday night, likened the 45th president to a noisy neighbor: “The childish nicknames and crazy conspiracy theories and weird obsession with crowd size. It just goes on and on. The other day, I heard someone compare Trump to the neighbor who keeps running his leaf blower outside your window every minute of every day. “From a neighbor, that’s exhausting. From a president, it’s just dangerous.” Ex-boyfriend House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York got laughs Wednesday with this comparison: “Donald Trump is like an old boyfriend who you broke up with, but he just won’t go away. He has spent the last four years spinning the block trying to get back into a relationship with the American people. Bro, we broke up with you for a reason.” Communist dictator Republican commentator Ana Navarro, noting on Tuesday that Trump has called Vice

What to know about Labor Day and its history of celebrating the American worker

From barbecues to getaways to shopping the sales, many people across the U.S. mark Labor Day – the federal holiday celebrating the American worker – by finding ways to relax. This year is the 130th anniversary of the holiday, which is celebrated on the first Monday of September. While actions by unions in recent years to advocate for workers are a reminder of the holiday’s activist roots, the three-day weekend it creates has become a touchstone in the lives of Americans marking the unofficial end of summer. Here’s what to know about Labor Day: Its origins date back to the late 19th century, when activists first sought to establish a day to pay tribute to workers. The first Labor Day celebration in the U.S. took place in New York City on Sept. 5, 1882, when some 10,000 workers marched in a parade organized by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor. Workers were seeing their quality of life decline as they transitioned from artisan to factory jobs, even as the quality of life of factory owners was “just skyrocketing,” said Todd Vachon, an
