NWSL, players have new CBA deal with big wage raises, no draft and other major gains for labor

NEW YORK (AP) — The National Women’s Soccer League and its players have reached a deal on a new collective bargaining agreement that eliminates the draft, guarantees all contracts, provides for parental leave and childcare benefits and promises more money for the players. The deal that extends the current contract with the NWSL Players Association by four years has no maximum salary; the minimum salary will rise from $48,500 in 2025 to $82,500 in 2030, the last year of the new CBA. It includes a base salary cap of $3.3 million per team in 2025 that will rise to $5.1 million in 2030 but also includes a revenue-sharing model that could increase the cap even more. Mental health services and mental health leave policies will be broadened, and charter flights will be allowed for up to six legs per season. Team medical and training staffs will also increase. “The NWSL prioritized terms to ensure that the league can attract, develop and retain the most talented players in the world,” Chief Sporting Director Tatjana Haenni said. “Soccer is a uniquely global game with roots in every

Fiery I-80 crash of Tesla electric semi is being investigated by feds

The fiery crash of a Tesla electric semi truck this week on the Sierra Nevada stretch of Interstate 80 has prompted a National Transportation Safety Board investigation. The Tesla tractor-trailer ran off the road around 3 a.m. Monday, Aug. 19, on eastbound I-80 near Emigrant Gap. No one was injured, but the vehicle caught fire and ignited brush, and the truck’s batteries continued burning for four hours, the NTSB said. While truck traffic was held on both sides of the Sierra Nevada, a 25-mile stretch of the freeway remained closed and a California Highway Patrol aircraft dropped fire retardant on the burning wreck, which was spewing toxic fumes. Westbound lanes between Yuba Pass and Colfax were finally reopened shortly before 5 p.m., and eastbound lanes at 7 p.m., the CHP said. Tesla makes the semi at its factory near Reno and uses it to transport parts to its auto plant in Fremont. Though the semi was unveiled in 2017, it’s still considered to be in pilot production. The NTSB said in a statement that it decided to investigate “due to its interest in the fire

How to find the Big Ten Network on your cable, satellite or streaming system

The Big Ten Network will broadcast 44 football games this season, with every team in the conference making at least two appearances. USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington fans undoubtedly know the Big Ten Network (BTN) is easier to find than the Pac-12 Networks. It has roughly four times the distribution (60 million homes compared to 15 million). But where is the BTN in your area? Here’s a brief explanation: The network is available on every major (and many minor) video distributors across the country, including Cox, Dish, fubo, Hulu + Live TV, Spectrum, Verizon Fios, Xfinity, YouTube TV and, yes, DirecTV. And if that list isn’t comprehensive enough, the Big Ten Network has a channel finder on its website. It’s also available via streaming on the Fox Sports app. Lastly, B1G+ is the network’s subscription streaming platform and features next-day replays of every game. *** Send suggestions, comments and tips (confidentiality guaranteed) to wilnerhotline@bayareanewsgroup.com or call 408-920-5716 *** Follow me on Twitter/X: @WilnerHotline Originally Published: August 22, 2024 at 8:30 a.m.

Mpox is again a global health emergency. How concerned should Californians be?

Two years ago, cases of the infectious viral disease mpox were rapidly increasing in cities across the globe — particularly in the U.S. — causing a scramble for vaccine doses to help contain the outbreak and ease the virus’ uncomfortable symptoms. That strain of mpox was rarely deadly; even still, officials soon declared it a worldwide public health emergency in July 2022. In the months that followed, the spread of the virus steadily fell, though cases have never completely gone away. But last week, a much more concerning variant of mpox, previously called monkeypox, has once again prompted such a global health alert. This outbreak is primarily affecting Central African countries, but officials warn that it appears to spread more easily than the 2022 strain — and is significantly more deadly. Where is mpox a concern right now? The World Health Organization has deemed this clade, or variant, of mpox the latest global health emergency. The majority of these mpox Clade I cases have been recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where there have already been 14,000 cases and 524 deaths this year, according

Klamath Salmon Festival Turns 60, Celebrates Elders

Driving north in the rain from Arcata early Saturday morning, the prospects for the 60th annual Klamath Salmon Festival didn’t look good. But by the 9:30 a.m. start of the parade, the rain had stopped, the sun came out from behind the clouds and this year’s festival celebrating tribal elders (because the event was turning 60) got under way. This year’s festival theme, Cho’ skuy’ soo huuew kue no’-o-muen-o-wo-nee (“May the ones that endure live well”), is an expression of appreciation composed by the Yurok Language Program for the tribal elders who paved the way for the tribe’s continued success. In addition to the parade, the 2024 Salmon Festival featured the Ney-puey Fun Run, live music by the Blue Rhythm Revue and Brett McFarland and the Freedom Riders, activities for children, and stick game, basketball, arm wrestling (a new addition this year) and Indian card game tournaments. While fresh-caught local salmon was again not on the menu (to protect the fishery while the tribe works to undam and restore the Klamath River), attendees had plenty of food options and gift items to choose from more

Arkansas rejects efforts to put abortion initiative on ballots

August 22, 2024 / 12:06 PM EDT / AP Arkansas governor on gun control, abortion Arkansas governor Asa Hutchinson on gun control, abortion and 2024 07:16 The Arkansas Supreme Court upheld the state’s rejection of signature petitions for an abortion rights ballot initiative on Thursday, keeping the proposal from going before voters in November. The ruling dashed the hopes of organizers, who submitted the petitions, of getting the constitutional amendment measure on the ballot in the predominantly Republican state, where many top leaders tout their opposition to abortion . Election officials said Arkansans for Limited Government, the group behind the measure, did not properly submit documentation regarding the signature gatherers it hired. The group disputed that assertion and argued it should have been given more time to provide any additional documents needed. “We find that the Secretary correctly refused to count the signatures collected by paid canvassers because the sponsor failed to file the paid canvasser training certification,” the court said in a 4-3 ruling. Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 decision removing the nationwide right to abortion , there has been a push to

A new study is changing the way scientists view prehistoric human hunters

Popular depictions of prehistoric hunts tend to show ancient humans hurling their spears into mammoths and mastodons. But such a technique would have been less than useless — leaving a hunter with no spear and an angry mammoth, a new study argues. Instead, Ice Age hunters may have used a sophisticated hunting tool to kill prey like mammoths — or predators like saber-toothed cats — using the animals’ own power and weight, according to findings published Wednesday in PLOS ONE. Thirteen thousand years ago, “people were living among saber tooths and giant bears that are twice the size of grizzlies, mastodons and bison,” Scott Byram, a stone tool specialist at the University of California, Berkeley and co-author of the study, told The Hill Byram and his co-authors hypothesized that prehistoric hunters “probably needed a weapon that could actually be used a little bit more defensively than just as an offensive throwing spear” to survive in those circumstances. If you find one of these outside your home, call police Why? Because in addition to the risks involved in throwing away one’s weapon in the face of a charging mammoth

ATM fees have hit an all-time record high

Withdrawing cash is costing Americans more cash than ever, according to an annual survey from Bankrate. The national average combined out-of-network ATM fee is now $4.77, up from $4.72 last year. The combined fee is the sum of the charge by an out-of-network bank, $3.19, plus the average charge of $1.58 levied by your own bank for using an out-of-network ATM. “Confine cash withdrawals to in-network ATMs or get cash back when using a debit card,” advises Greg McBride, Bankrate’s chief financial analyst. “See if your bank participates in a nationwide ATM network that can be used free of charge.” Southern Californians hit with skyrocketing electricity bills Of the top 25 metro areas in the U.S., Atlanta has the highest average combined ATM fee of $5.33. The lowest is Boston at $4.16. Separately, Bankrate says the national average overdraft fee has climbed to $27.08 this year, up from $26.61 in 2023. This increase comes after two straight years of declines after the average overdraft fee peaked at $33.58 in 2021. On the other hand, NSF (insufficient funds) fees are down for the third straight year.

L.A. beach community begins clearing homeless encampments

It comes as no surprise to some living on the sand, but a popular beach in Los Angeles is the next California community to be cleared of its homeless encampments. On Wednesday, signs posted, and even handed to people experiencing homelessness, at Dockweiler State Beach in Playa del Rey stated that a massive “cleanup” was set to ensue at 7 a.m. Thursday. In preparation for a teardown, many unhoused people on the beach began to move their personal belongings early Thursday morning. At the scene, KTLA’s Annie Rose Ramos noted that the “encampments” at Dockweiler were unlike similar spots that have been torn down by officials in recent weeks, like in Long Beach. That’s because rather than tents and people populating centralized, concentrated areas, the encampments were spread out across the beach with considerable distances between them. People experiencing homelessness at Dockweiler State Beach in Playa del Rey were informed of a “major cleanup” operation taking place on Thursday. The cleanup comes as Gov. Gavin Newsom has encouraged local governments to take a more aggressive approach to handle California’s homelessness crisis. (KTLA) One man living

Democrats conclude their convention Thursday with their new standard bearer, Kamala Harris

By JONATHAN J. COOPER, WILL WEISSERT and ZEKE MILLER Associated Press CHICAGO (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris closes out the Democratic National Convention Thursday night when she accepts her party’s historic presidential nomination and seizes one of her few remaining opportunities to appeal to an audience of millions. Harris will lay out her vision for the country and prosecute her case against Republican Donald Trump, capping a whirlwind month that began when President Joe Biden ended his reelection bid and endorsed her to replace him atop the Democratic ticket. Harris has three objectives for her speech, according to a campaign official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive speech preparations. She’ll share her background rising from a middle-class family to protect others as a prosecutor, contrast her “optimistic” vision with Trump’s “dark” agenda and evoke a sense of patriotism, the official said. Harris spoke briefly to the convention on Monday, when she thanked Biden and celebrated his record as president, and again on Tuesday, when the beginning of her rally in Milwaukee was streamed into the convention hall after Democrats reaffirmed their

DNC in Chicago: What happened Wednesday — and what’s coming Thursday

It’s the fourth and final day of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where Vice President Kamala Harris will ceremonially accept her party’s nomination. Her vice presidential pick, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, spoke to his largest national audience yet on Wednesday night, peppering his relatively brief address with sports references and framing the party’s definition of freedom. “Freedom. When Republicans use the word freedom, they mean that the government should be free to invade your doctor’s office. Corporations free to pollute your air and water. And banks free to take advantage of customers,” Walz said. “But when we Democrats talk about freedom, we mean the freedom to make a better life for yourself and the people that you love. Freedom to make your own health care decisions. And, yeah, your kids’ freedom to go to school without worrying about being shot dead in the hall.” The Tribune’s Dan Petrella has the dispatch from inside the United Center. And former President Bill Clinton, who departed frequently from his prepared remarks in an address relatively early in the evening, highlighted Trump’s selfishness, joking that he sounded like

Travel guide and TV host Rick Steves says he has prostate cancer

TV travel host Rick Steves, who has been guiding Americans through Europe for nearly half a century, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and is set to have surgery this fall. “My doctor assures me that, if you’re going to get cancer, this is a good kind to get, and careful scans show no sign of it having spread,” the guidebook author said Wednesday in an X post announcing his diagnosis. There is a clear path forward to getting healthy, and this fall, I’ll be in the hospital for a few days having prostate surgery.” Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in the United States and is the second leading cause of cancer death among men in the U.S., according to the National Cancer Institute. This type of cancer usually grows very slowly, and surgery is a common treatment for patients who are in good health and whose tumor is only in the prostate gland, the institute says. The longtime “Rick Steves’ Europe” host noted that his doctors are fine with him filming two new shows in France over the next three weeks. He

With strike behind them, Los Angeles hotels look to move on

On a spring day last year, representatives from dozens of Los Angeles-area hotels gathered for a meeting with the union representing their cleaners, front desk clerks and other workers. The workers’ contracts with the hotels had expired and leaders from Unite Here Local 11 laid out a stark proposal for new agreements, which included an immediate $5 an hour raise for its members. It was a nonstarter for the hotel owners and operators — so much so they refused to send their negotiators to the next bargaining session. Weeks of tense negotiations followed and when talks broke down, Unite Here launched a strike thought to be the largest ever to hit the U.S. hotel industry. The strike’s intermittent work stoppages, which had staff at more than 60 hotels walking off the job, would go on for more than a year. Workers in red shirts sporting drums and horns became a fixture outside of Los Angeles hotels. Picket lines were tumultuous at times and the disruption riled hotel guests, who lashed out at workers. But now calm has returned. All but a few of the hotels

60% of baby foods in study don’t meet nutrition standards

Study: Most baby foods are unhealthy New study reveals 60% of baby foods in U.S. fail to meet nutritional health standards 02:01 Baby foods, from snack pouches to jarred purees found in grocery stores across the United States, may be less healthy than you think, according to new research.  In the study, published in the journal Nutrients Wednesday, researchers at The George Institute for Global Health analyzed 651 commercially produced infant and toddler foods across 10 different grocery chains in the U.S. They found nearly 60% of the foods failed to meet nutritional standards set by the World Health Organization. Among all products, 70% failed to meet protein requirements and 44% exceeded total sugar recommendations. In addition, 1 in 4 products didn’t meet calorie requirements and 1 in 5 exceeded recommended sodium limits. “In this study, what they seem to be showing is that most of the processed baby foods that are sold in grocery stores contain very processed ingredients, high levels of salt, sugar and fat,” Dr. Ellie Erickson, a pediatrician at Duke University, told “CBS Mornings.” The most concerning products were those aimed at convenience, including
