Students want their colleges to divest from Israel. Here’s what that really means.

By Aimee Picchi Edited By Anne Marie Lee Updated on: May 6, 2024 / 6:16 PM EDT / CBS News Calls for divestment from Israel: What to know What to know about calls for schools to divest from Israel 04:08 College endowments, usually a sleepy part of a university’s operations, are now front and center in the campus protests that are spreading across the nation, with students holding up signs with slogans such as “Disclose! Divest!” and “Divest from death now!” These demands are central to the student protesters’ efforts, with many of the students condemning what they see as their universities’ financial support for  Israel’s war in Gaza . At Brown University, for example, student protesters charge that the school’s $6.6 billion endowment will remain “complicit” until it divests “from Israel and the military-industrial complex.” The push for schools to divest from Israel is putting a spotlight on the world of college endowments, while also raising questions about the effectiveness of divestment as a tool to enact change. To be sure, colleges aren’t strangers to calls for divestment, with student protesters in the 1980s demanding their

Three surfers on a dream trip to Mexico were brutally killed. Here’s what we know

A trio of tourists on a surfing trip in Mexico were living an idyllic life. They were posting photos of themselves on the beach, on rooftops, drinking beer, listening to music as they explored the country’s scenic coastline. Then, they disappeared. Here’s what we know about what happened: Who were they? The men who were killed were Australian brothers Callum Robinson, 33, his brother Jake, 30, and their American friend Jack Carter Rhoad, 30. Callum was a high-level lacrosse player. He played Division III college lacrosse at Stevenson University in Maryland. “He lived an extraordinary life, but what is most impressive about Callum is what a loyal friend he was. Once you were his friend, you were friends for life,” said Stevenson University lacrosse team coach Paul Cantabene. “My heart is shattered into a million pieces,” wrote Callum Robinson’s girlfriend, Emily Horwath, in an Instagram post. His brother Jake was a doctor, and Jack Carter Rhoad founded an online apparel company in San Diego called Loma Apparel. He also worked for a consulting company called ITCO Solutions. Rhoad had recently proposed to his girlfriend, and

Jackie Lacey lost the L.A. D.A. job to George Gascón. Now she’s endorsing his 2024 rival

L.A. County’s former top prosecutor, Jackie Lacey, announced her support Monday for Nathan Hochman in the 2024 district attorney’s race, telling voters it was time to oust the man who booted her from office four years ago, George Gascón. Standing next to Hochman on her mother’s lawn at the edge of the Crenshaw district, Lacey said it was time to “excuse the current district attorney and elect someone with a conscience.” “Criminals are more brazen because they know they have allies in that office … it is time to elect somebody who will be pro-active in making us safer,” she said. “I have watched as the current administration harmed our community by rolling out ill-conceived, poorly implemented, ham-fisted policies.” Lacey was both the county’s first female and first Black district attorney, serving two terms in office from 2012 to 2020 after working for decades as a county prosecutor. But her pursuit of a third term fell short when her history of declining to prosecute police officers in excessive force cases ran up against Gascón’s criminal justice reform agenda in the summer of 2020, after the

Madonna’s Celebration Tour pulls record 1.6M fans into the groove at Rio’s Copacabana

More than a million music fans gathered at Brazil’s iconic Copacabana beach to prove their love to Madonna over the weekend. The “Get into the Groove” and “Vogue” pop diva concluded her career-spanning Celebration Tour with a bang over the weekend, treating fans in Rio de Janeiro to a free beach concert on Saturday. “This really happened,” the singer reminisced in an Instagram video shared Sunday. The Instagram clip shows an aerial view of attendees assembling on the sandy Brazilian strip, which stretches more than 2 miles along the coast. While some fans danced on the beach, others hosted house parties in nearby beachfront apartments and hotels, the Associated Press reported. “This place is magic,” the 65-year-old singing icon said during her show, which also featured appearances from Brazilian artists Anitta and Pabllo Vittar. An estimated 1.6 million people gathered for Madonna’s Celebration Tour finale, Brazilian outlet G1 reported, citing Rio City Hall’s tourism agency. The event was also broadcast on Brazilian network TV Globo. Even before a million-plus fans descended on Copacabana over the weekend, Madonna announced in late March that her send-off would

Las Vegas alien video is authentic, expert says

A veteran crime scene recreation expert who has analyzed the video purporting to show two alien creatures in a Las Vegas backyard says the video hasn’t been altered, and he believes he sees images of not one but two beings. “Once you see it, you can’t deny it,” said Scott Roder of “Evidence Room” Animation and Exhibits told NewsNation. “There’s no editing. That is an original video,” he told NewsNation’s “Banfield” on Friday. “We tried to debunk it to see if there was something that was added to the video. All of our results came back as it was authentic.” On April 30, 2023, the Kenmore family called 911 to report something “not human” in their backyard. Police investigated in part because other officers had spotted a mysterious flashing light in the sky that same evening. Seeing orange and white lines on the freeway? Here’s what they mean But proving the video hasn’t been altered doesn’t confirm what it shows. And Roder says it took a lot of views before he spotted something that he initially missed: two beings in the video at the same

USPS urges homeowners to fix their mailboxes

The United States Postal Service is encouraging Americans to clean up and fix their mailboxes as part of an annual campaign. Mailbox Improvement Week takes place every third week of May and is meant to gently urge homeowners to perform maintenance on their mailboxes and repair regular wear and tear. Among the improvements the USPS suggests, homeowners should consider replacing loose hinges on the mailbox door, remounting a loose mailbox post, adding or replacing house numbers and repainting mailboxes that are rusted or peeling. “Replacing rusted hinges or remounting loose posts will help ensure safe and timely delivery of your mail,” USPS said in a news release Monday. You can also replace or upgrade your aging mailbox by purchasing a larger capacity “next generation” mailbox. “Today’s newer mailboxes are wider and taller to accommodate delivery of items you’ve ordered online and reduce the need for notices left and trips to the Post Office to retrieve a package,” the USPS said. Those larger “package-friendly” mailboxes can be purchased at many local hardware stores. For more information, click here. An extra-large mailbox compared to a standard size

Jury in Trump trial gets inside look into Michael Cohen payments

Jurors in former President Donald Trump’s criminal trial in New York heard testimony Monday about how the business records at the center of the case were crafted, with attorneys questioning two Trump Organization employees about their involvement in payments to Michael Cohen. Trump is charged with 34 counts of falsification of business records and has pleaded not guilty. Each of those counts corresponds to a record that stemmed from a series of monthly payments to Cohen in 2017. Prosecutors say the funds — $35,000 a month — were meant to reimburse Cohen for the $130,000 he paid adult film star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election, plus a bonus and enough money to cover taxes. In exchange, Daniels agreed to remain quiet about an alleged sexual encounter with Trump from years earlier, which he denies.  Two witnesses involved in the payments to Cohen told jurors on Monday about how they were handled internally. Jeffrey McConney, the longtime controller for the Trump Organization, recalled how the chief financial officer of the company directed him to pay Cohen in monthly installments, beginning in February 2017.  At first

Opinion: Have we learned nothing? The protester’s taunt, ‘Go back to Poland,’ is grotesque

When it was reported that a demonstrator near Columbia University had loudly suggested that Jews should go back to Poland, I was already there. My wife, son and daughter and I were visiting Holocaust sites in Eastern Europe. My father’s family is from Poland and Ukraine, and many of our relatives perished in the Holocaust. I don’t know if any of my ancestors were Zionists although I suspect some of them must have been. The definition of “Zionist” that I’ve always used is a person who believes the Jews deserve a state where they can be safe. That is something I believe. I also believe the Palestinians deserve a state where they can be safe, the Israeli occupation has been a disaster and Benjamin Netanyahu needs to be replaced. As for the suggestion that Jews, or more precisely Ashkenazi Jewish Israelis — those of European heritage — should book a one-way ticket to Warsaw, I realize it’s not a point of view representative of the whole of the protesters on U.S. campuses. Yet it is undeniably a reflection of the “settler colonialist” position on Israel
