Don’t get used to this weather pattern in California, study says

Last year’s snow deluge in California, which quickly erased a two-decade-long megadrought, was essentially a once-in-a-lifetime rescue from above, a new study found. Don’t get used to it because with climate change, the 2023 California snow bonanza —a record for snow on the ground on April 1 — will be less likely in the future, said the study in Monday’s journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The study authors coined the term “snow deluge” for one-in-20-year heavy snowfalls when it’s cold and wet enough to maintain a deep snowpack through April 1. But even among these rare snow deluges, last year’s stood out as the snowiest, edging out 1922 in snow water equivalent, said study lead author Adrienne Marshall, a hydrologist at the Colorado School of Mines. Its timing couldn’t be better. Last year’s snow came after a megadrought that started around the turn of the century and was one of the worst in more than 1,000 years. That drought is gone now. Palm Springs FD to Begin Wildfire Mitigation Procedures Wednesday

Palm Springs firefighters and other municipal employees will begin weed abatement and other brush clearance on the west end of the city Wednesday as part of a program to eliminate hazards heading into Southern California’s wildfire season. The workers will begin the day at the Historic Tennis Club Neighborhood near the North Lykken Trailhead, Palm Springs Chief Communications Officer Amy Blaisdell said. The Palm Springs Fire Department, in a safety and public education campaign aimed to combat wildfires during rising temperatures in the next three months, will commence the annual removal across “87 acres that cover 27 high potential wildfire zones,” according to Blaisdell. Firefighters and city workers will also ask local residents to pitch in with the removal. Fire Chief Paul Alverado will also provide a live demonstration of positive and negative brush removal methods and tactics.

DUI Trial Date Set for Palm Desert Teacher, Football Coach

A judge confirmed an Aug. 29 trial date Tuesday for Cameron Francis Curtis, a Palm Desert High School teacher and football coach accused of striking and killing a pedestrian while intoxicated. Curtis, 32, previously pleaded not guilty to a first-degree murder charge after allegedly driving into 64-year-old Nancy Valdes of Palm Desert. Curtis was also held to answer for an enhancement of “[inflicting] great bodily injury.” The upcoming court date was scheduled during a trial readiness conference Tuesday. During an Oct. 2023 preliminary hearing at the Larson Justice Center, Deputy Page Broughton of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department testified that he responded to the scene of the crash and saw Valdes’ lifeless body lying in the street. Law enforcement body-worn camera evidence had already been filed at a felony settlement conference earlier that year. Valdes was a caretaker for an elderly woman in the area and had just left a nearby home to walk the woman’s dog when she was struck, according to Broughton. Curtis was allegedly drinking alone at Stuft Pizza, about two miles from the collision, from around 3:20 p.m. to shortly before

‘American Idol’ pays tribute to late Grammy-winning former contestant Mandisa

“American Idol” paid tribute to former contestant Mandisa on Monday. Former “Idol” contestants Melinda Doolittle, Colton Dixon and Danny Gokey performed a cover of “Shackles (Praise You)” by gospel duo Mary Mary. Mandisa memorably performed the song on Season 5 of the show and later included it on her CDs “Overcomer: The Greatest Hits” and “Get Up: The Remixes.” “Mandisa’s joyful spirit carried over into her Grammy-winning gospel music and dedication to her faith,” “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest said as he introduced the performance. Her fellow musicians, all dressed in white, sang Mandisa’s praises following the performance. “I’ve known her for over 20 years,” Doolittle said, visibly emotional as she talked to Seacrest. “We started off singing background in sessions together and then she got on ‘Idol’ and I cheered for her. Then I came the next season and she cheered for me. So that is my girl, through and through.” Dixon said that “Shackles (Praise You)” “sums up [Mandisa’s] life.” “I think she came in praising, I think she left praising,” he told the audience. “We’re gonna miss her, but our loss is heaven’s

How a negotiation over cable fees could weigh on Paramount’s sale

Paramount Global’s sale talks with David Ellison’s Skydance Media face a milestone later this week, but the battered Redstone family-controlled media company has been scrambling to meet another deadline — one that also carries huge implications. On Tuesday, Paramount and Charter Communications agreed to a deadline extension as the two sides worked to hammer out a new distribution agreement for Paramount’s channels, which would replace a three-year pact that was due to expire this week, according to knowledgeable people who are not authorized to comment publicly on the high-stakes talks. Charter pays Paramount significant fees to carry its channels, including CBS, BET, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon, on Charter’s Spectrum television service. As Paramount‘s cable networks lose viewers and advertising revenue declines, the company must protect the affiliate fees it receives from distributors, including Charter. Paramount cannot afford to lose such a key source of revenue from one of its primary partners. The outcome of the negotiations could weigh on Paramount’s valuation in the event of a sale. While the length of the contract extension is not clear, it does give Paramount some breathing room in

At least 25 injured when L.A. Metro train, bus collide outside Exposition Park

A Los Angeles Metro train and a USC transportation bus collided outside Exposition Park shortly before noon, injuring 55 people, according to authorities. Los Angeles City firefighters rolled to the scene at 11:54 a.m. after receiving a report of an accident at 901 W. Exposition Blvd., just north of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. Dave Sotero, Los Angeles Metro communications director, said the bus crossed into the path of a Metro E Line train. The light rail line runs from East Los Angeles to downtown Santa Monica mainly at street level, and not all of the crossings have gates. Calls to USC were not immediately returned. Sotero said the Los Angeles Police Department would be in charge of the investigation. In total, 55 people were injured and treated or received treatment, according to Nicholas Prange, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson. Of that group, 18 were transported to area hospitals, two in critical condition and 16 in fair condition. At least 37 were treated and released on the scene, according to Prange, who confirmed the two most severe patients were the bus driver

For Anne Hathaway, going five years without booze is a bigger milestone than ‘middle age’

Anne Hathaway has been sober for more than five years, making good on a promise to stay dry while parenting her young sons. To her, consciously staying sharp for that long is a bigger deal than hitting a certain birthday. “The Princess Diaries” and “The Devil Wears Prada” alum, who stars in Prime Video’s adaptation of Robinne Lee’s 2017 romance novel “The Idea of You,” touched on her sobriety when discussing middle age, an arbitrary milestone she says she doesn’t take that seriously. “There are so many other things that I identify as milestones. I don’t normally talk about it, but I am over five years sober,” she said this week on “The Interview” podcast from the New York Times. “That feels like a milestone to me.” “Forty feels like a gift. The fact of the matter is I hesitate at calling things ‘middle age’ simply because I can be a little bit of a semantic stickler and I could get hit by a car later today — I really hope that doesn’t happen — [but] we don’t know if this is middle age. A 17-year-old girl was fatally shot while walking home in Long Beach. Police release video of a suspect

The Long Beach Police Department on Tuesday released video of a man they suspect of shooting and killing a17-year-old girl last month. The video, about 55 seconds long, shows a man dressed in dark attire walking past an apartment complex in the 1100 block of Lewis Avenue at 8:20 p.m. March 26, the night that Briana Soto, 17, was shot. Detectives believed the man ran from the scene shortly after the shooting. Soto was wounded and transported to St. Mary Medical Center, where she died of her injuries four days later. Long Beach police are seeking this person. (Long Beach Police Department) Ana Morales, Briana’s mother, told KCBS-TV that her daughter was walking home from work that evening and that she had just finished FaceTiming with her over the phone when the mother heard gunshots outside her apartment. They hope someone may recognize him and know his identity or whereabouts. “We are requesting our community’s help to identify the suspect responsible for committing this horrendous crime,” Police Chief Wally Hebeish

Tesla opens supercharging network to non-Tesla drivers in California

Non-Tesla drivers in California now have access to the company’s network of charging stations, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on Saturday. The latest move brings the total number of public charging stations in the state to more than 105,000, including 10,000 fast-charging stations, according to the governor. California reaches electric vehicle charger milestone “California dominates in this space,” Newsom said in a video accompanying the announcement. “We want to maintain that leadership and dominance as we transition from dirty tailpipes to a low-carbon, green-growth future.” Newsom also stated that for every five gas stations in California, there’s one electric vehicle fast charging station. The announcement comes amid the state’s shift from gas-powered vehicles to their electric counterparts. In 2020, Newsom signed an executive order requiring the sale of new cars to be zero-emission by 2035. Los Angeles County is home to the most electric car chargers in the state, according to a charger station dashboard operated by the California Energy Commission.   New California bill could require cars to have speed limiter technology The county has a total of 31,425 electric car charging and fast-charging stations.

US poised to ease restrictions on marijuana in historic shift, but it’ll remain controlled substance

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will move to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug, The Associated Press has learned, a historic shift to generations of American drug policy that could have wide ripple effects across the country. The proposal, which still must be reviewed by the White House Office of Management and Budget, would recognize the medical uses of cannabis and acknowledge it has less potential for abuse than some of the nation’s most dangerous drugs. However, it would not legalize marijuana outright for recreational use. The agency’s move, confirmed to the AP on Tuesday by five people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive regulatory review, clears the last significant regulatory hurdle before the agency’s biggest policy change in more than 50 years can take effect. Once OMB signs off, the DEA will take public comment on the plan to move marijuana from its current classification as a Schedule I drug, alongside heroin and LSD. It moves pot to Schedule III, alongside ketamine and some anabolic steroids, following a recommendation from the

Seeing orange and white lines on the freeway? Here’s what they mean

Transportation officials in Southern California are testing a new way to get drivers to slow down in construction zones, and — based on early results — they say it’s working. The Caltrans pilot program began last year on the 5 Freeway in northern San Diego County where drivers are encountering orange and white lane striping through the Build North County Corridor Project. The $987 million project is adding carpool/High-Occupancy Vehicle lanes in both directions of the freeway between Highway 78 in Oceanside and Lomas Santa Fe Drive in Solana Beach, an area prone to heavy traffic backups. L.A. officials grapple with wave of violent Metro attacks “I was curious and didn’t know what to make of them,” said Josh Rose, who was visiting from Utah and noticed the stripes while driving from Los Angeles to San Diego earlier this month. “They certainly got my attention.” Caltrans says the contrasting colors are designed to increase awareness of the construction zone and “enhance safety” for drivers and road crews. Officials hope drivers will not only slow down but also see the lines more clearly in the rain
